staurogyne repens, Hydro sp. Japan, blyxa japonica, fissidens fontanus moss, pogostemon helferi, Rotala Indica, HC- baby tears, UG- utricularia graminifolia bladderwort carpet, regular hair grass- parvula, pogostemon erectus. And Rotala magenta or maybe colorata. I can't remember. At the time it wasn't doing that well. Thanks for watching!

+Hanne Lykke Poulsen If you are lacking a specific nutrient the plant will not be able to produce proteins as efficiently and will suffer, which can lead to imbalances in nutrient concentrations and can lead to algae. You just want all types (Macros/Micros) of minerals in adequate amounts to make sure that none are lacking. The plants will respond and will grow more efficiently and the algae will subside.

maybe to guppies, mine didn't bother my shrimp. They were kept in check by my female Cockatoo Cichlid, so maybe on their own they could be somewhat aggressive. Besides that you can just work on your husbandry skills and manually remove the algae from the tank. I just did a video called how to beat back algae like a boss that may give you some ideas.

+Hannelore Rack Either severs iron toxicity in the leaves or severe under nourishment from a lack of fertilizers. Are the plants new to the tank? Some plants will melt in a new environment and then bounce back.

Sorry, wrong video. You probably need to dose more nutrients if you have high light and CO2. Try dosing more nutrients and maybe more light to get pearling.

Hi good evening I'm Billy from Belfast, you talked in your'e video "How to Prevent and Control Algae" and one of the tricks you stated was to have your inflow & outflow on opposite ends of the filters for more circulation.

As I'm fairly new to planted aquariums I have 2x external filters, would I still have to place the inflow & outflow on opposite ends, or just have the Left external filter inflow & outflow on the same end etc,etc.

Yeah if you have two external filters it will be fine to just have each filter handle one half of the tank. That way you don't have to stretch the tubes across the tank.

I only use it if I have an algae outbreak not as a staple. No set schedule. Recommended dosage is 3ml/gal which would be 78ml/100l. I wouldn't even dose that much. Personally I never do. I put it in a spray bottle and spray 2-4 times on the infected area and then wait a few hours. I will do this once a day until the algae turns pink or orange. Sometimes it will die after the first application. Make sure to observe fish breathing and look for melting of plant leaves. Always start out slow.

Higher CO2 will not cause algae to take over in a healthy aquarium. Too much light, and an imbalance of nutrients will. You want to have all nutrients in abundance and the PAR from the lights at the right intensity. Too little CO2 with high lighting and nutrients will cause algae because now the low CO2 is the limiting factor for plant growth and the plants don't grow or use all that light and all those nutrients because they don't have enough CO2. Lighting, CO2 and nutrients all need to be in balance and then all the nutrients together need to be in abundance.

Thanks for the advice. I dose excel and API leaf zone along with root tabs. I don't have any algae except some of my ludwigia does look like its a little dirty on the leaves. Not sure what kind of algae it is. All the research I do says water changes ounce a week but in your video you don't recommend water changes often. Do you have high lighting and CO2? I just mention in a few of my videos that I haven't done water changes for a few months and state once you get your system down you don't have to do changes as frequently. Until then you should be doing them at least every other week, preferably every week. I just try to run a more sustainable method to save on time and money and to see what I can get away with. I will check out your channel.

Thanks for watching, you will want to dose monopotassium phosphate. Will help add potassium to the tank as well, which is nice. Either buy and use dry fertilizers or liquid ferts.

I just happened upon this video while jumping through videos on various reptiles. I don't currently keep any fish, but great video. Your naturalistic habitat is awesome. I'm so used to multi-colored beds of stone and gravel for fish tanks, which is probably what's turned me off from wanting an aquarium. But I love the grassy, lively, plant and fish filled look of your setup.

It's a work of art, really. It seems like such a natural scene. Are these various plants expensive and/or difficult to set up?

I keep several reptiles, so I understand that that ALL pets cost a good chunk of money to really take care of properly. But, relatively speaking, is an aquarium like yours an achievable project for a beginner fish keeper?

Wow, thank you for all the kind compliments. The plants aren't very expensive. The foreground plant upfront is actually pretty expensive and hard to take care of, but most aren't ridiculously priced. Especially if you buy plants from other members on planted tank forums. It is expensive. The lighting alone is over $300.00 and that is for reasonably priced LEDs, given they are LEDs. I wouldn't say it is impossible. Just depends on your commitment and dedication. There is a lot of science that goes into aquariums, but nowadays with all the substrate systems and fertilizer dosing methods you can set up a nice aquarium with relatively no experience.

I have a 16 gal. tank with two 3inch goldfish I "acquired "...I know goldfish need colder water, but what algae eater can take the same colder temps? Yeah they fill in and grow like this, but only with care and trimming. I actually bought most these plants from an online fish forum from other members, plantedtank.net. There is a section where you can ask if anyone has a specific plant and they will ship it to you usually for a really good deal.

Yeah just start out slow and increase the Co2 every few days. You will want either a drop checker of pH meter to monitor the relative Co2 levels in your tank.

Hi Dave, loving your tips and tanks but just saying "crank up the CO2" seems a bit dangerous, right? Folks need to understand the triangle between CO2, carbonate hardness (KH) and pH before messing with CO2. With low KH they might plummet the pH when cranking up the CO2. Haha, true-for a beginner that may not do regular maintenance or keep constant carbonate levels. Like Tom says and Seachem, that usually never happens. It would take quite a bit of neglect to crash the buffer. Usually you're on the safe side with the buffer. Fish death is the main concern I assume. I remember reading this awhile back. considering my KH is mainly, if not, all carbonates, I use RO and add exactly what I need, I can use a pH meter to measure Co2 levels against pH. Thanks for sharing.

Good theories but you forgot the #1 algae killer after improved circulation/filtration: emergent plants! Yes sir. Let one of your background plants grow beyond the water level where they can access all the cO2 in the world and sure thing after a few weeks many algae types won't stand a chance. But that is if other factors are aligned. Like you said just having emergent plants won't solve an algae bloom if your tank is by a sunny window or if you have anaerobic pockets in your tank. In my case, I am to blame for my cyanobacteria algae: 1- My fish were overfed a few times and 2- in trying to make my cuba stay down I sprinkled some soil on top of it creating anaerobic conditions, the exact area where the cyano emerged.

Yeah you freaked some people or with the h2o2 video. Solid advice here. Though I read an interesting article about putting the intake and outflow for canister filter on the same side, that created better flow. It was based on hydrodynamics and went over my head, but I have been trying it and seems to be fine. Better? Who knows.

Well all you have to do to see if that is true, is set up a tank of water and try different positions. Who knows what point they were trying to make or under what conditions. Man. Every single thing you say in this video is the popular superficial understanding on how to combat algae. The first popular notion is that algae is an enemy. But they do not compete with plants as we all love to believe. If they did the plants will have no chance. Good plant growth does suppress algae but it is not the good plant growth that makes that happen. And plants do not grow better with higher and higher CO2. There are many processes that take place in the tank that we have ignored for about a decade now and we have explanations for many things that are false but seem to make sense. CO2 does not affect BBA in any way for example. BBA can grow very well right above a CO2 diffuser with the CO2 bubbles surrounding it all over. Another example - you fixed your filter and now the tank runs cleaner. But you said it was the CO2 that was being diffused better. There are so many things that the filter (if functioning properly) does for the tank that it will take a whole article to describe them. Yet, noone discusses filtration too much. Same with your improved flow. Proper flow does quite a bit of things that we overlook. Because we all like to look at CO2, light, ferts, and water changes.

The truth is that if the general public wants to become more successful at the planted tank than they need to find the truth by reading. As we have both done and still do. I am not going to explain deep carbon cycle theories to everyone. They need to figure it out on their own. This just helps people have a starting point to get their minds engaged and hopefully helps them stumble across more in depth literature to give them a better understanding. If they never ask the question, "Why?" There is really nothing we can do. I appreciate your passion for this hobby and am glad you are searching for the truth. That's what I am trying to do myself.

I understand that this isn't explaining the deep underlying ecology/chemistry of the tank. PM me your theories or links so I can look into filtration more and read up on it to re-educate myself. I am not going to agree that plants don't benefit from more Co2. Maybe a few oddballs, which I still don't believe is the case. I agree, I don't think the higher Co2 levels are killing the algae. Just helping to create a more stable environment. Theory vs experience. We should look into why these measures help with algae control to truly understand what is going on. Through experience they do in fact help keep it at bay. Algae is always going to grow. It shouldn't be the enemy, but it isn't attractive all over plant leaves either. This is better than relying on algae eaters or peroxide. I should have mentioned more about good filtration that is probably the main underlying factor in this situation. I still believe that stable amounts of ferts, lighting and Co2 do help. I am sure you know Tom Barr and I don't know if you agree with all that he says, but he is an expert in algae and he talks quite a bit about high Co2 levels and lighting. This may be a subject you know more about than most people so I would appreciate links to articles etc... " Good plant growth suppresses algae, but it isn't the good plant growth that is actually doing it" Please explain? I am now intrigued. Another factor is in reality causing the suppression? If it goes into chemistry/carbon cycle/bacteria I would love to find out more. Thanks for the comment.

That was always my concern. I wanted lily pipes, but didn't want a tiny outtake. Now that I increased the tubing to the same diameter as the intake it isn't an issue. It allows me to use an inline Co2 diffuser as well. I will eventually get lily pipes and a bigger impeller.

+ADU Aquascaping using a 2211 as well. i just been cleaning the filter like every other week and it seems to work a little better. the impeller swap is a great idea. i havent changed the tubing yet and was looking at the 10mm VIV lily pipes for the outtake but i guess it would be better to go with a bigger tube and pipe

I bought a new gasket ring and increased the size of the outtake tubing. I used reducers in the reverse position. It allows for higher flow rates. I am going to get a larger impeller as well. I have the Eheim 2211 and I guess you can buy the 2213 impeller and it will fit in my smaller filter. What kind of filter are you using?

Great video, very informative. I'm currently having trouble with BBA growing on my anubias in my 54L (14 gallon) planted tank. I have 2x24 W tubes, which are probably contributing to that too, but I do use pressurized co2 though, although probably not as much as I'd like to.

Hi Natalie, u could try Seachem's Excel to fight the BBA. Some folks swear by it and in my 10G I think it helped to eradicate BBA. It won't change things over night but should make a diff within a few weeks. Just dose as recommended. If injecting CO2 it's best to do this with a pH controller to assure things don't get out of hand. Also it's good to have KH in the range of 3…9.

I think the one PlantedtankUK uses is pretty cheap and durable. You may want to watch his vid on drop checkers. I use Cal AquaLabs, but I wouldn't say they are cheap.

Yeah, I'm just worried that I might affect the fish somehow. When I first added co2 the glass cats were all at the surface. Can you recommend a decent, but relatively cheap drop-checker?

Thanks. Yeah just try increasing and stabilizing the Co2 in the tank. Get a drop checker if you don't already have one to help monitor the relative levels.
