I even go as far as using a co2 diffuser connected to an air pump with empty co2 bottle sitting next to stand for illusion.

PS don't forget you can still kill plastic plants, I had left lights on too long & yes, brown algae does grow on plastic plant leaves turning them from light green to black.

Love the tank !!! And I'm new to tank keeping do you have any advice for me.good size tank ? Filters? Gravel or sand bottom ? PLEASE HELP!!!!!
Big Al's
Big Al's - 8 years ago
We always recommend Gravel over Sand for most aquariums - Sand can be much more difficult to vacuum since it has a tendency to get sucked up. It also kicks up easier and can be sucked up by pumps. Sand and pumps don't mix! Sand can damage the impeller and the well the impeller sits in. Long story short, Gravel doesn't have these issues.

The use of the moss and driftwood does tie it all together. In addition to this a couple top water plants like duckweed can also make the tank look more realistic and they will 1) add an additional food source, 2) soften the water, 3) provide a hiding place for fry and young fish, 4) help to keep the adult fish more relaxed and they will also fix the nitrates built up in the tank.

WhiteKoneko

Silk plants would work too I think. Particularly if you keep fish with very delicate fins that can't have the sharp edges of some plastic plants in their tank.

I prefer a thin gravel bed so as not to collect dirt and am obsessive about cleaning it. What is the best way to anchor plastic plants in thin gravel beds so they do not float, but can be easily moved for cleaning or rearranged if desired?
Also, what precautions should be taken with driftwood to avoid it coloring the water?
WhiteKoneko
WhiteKoneko - 8 years ago
You can buy some plastic or silk plants that have a heavy stone base to them like some of the stuff he used here.
Faith Whatevers
Faith Whatevers - 8 years ago
Try using aquarium safe silicone and glueing heavier rocks to the plant base to anchor it. Also, with driftwood discoloring the water, just soak it in a separate container for a week or so. Keep changing the water till it stays clear, then it'll be great for your tank. :)

+Big Al's - Thank you so much for taking time and replying to me! I just put in my order and got free shipping, which was included! I'm only disappointed that the clover mat is no longer available, but was available just yesterday. I ended up substituting it with 2 hair grass mats. Again, thank you. I'm excited about receiving my pieces.
Big Al's
Big Al's - 8 years ago
+Brittany Lilly - In the video, it's a 20g aquarium. For plants, you can add 1background, 1 midground, and 2 foreground plants on top of what is used in the video to cover the extra space. For wood, a single medium, or a pair of small pieces can work well in a 30 gallon, but that is largely up to your taste!

Nice aquarium Thomas! I have a 125 gallon tank and would love to set up the tank the way it is shown in this video- I'm in planning stage and my set up going be frontosa cichlid tank. I brought from you two eheim 2217 canister also i 75 pounds lace rocks and 100 pounds cichlid white sands. How many background, midground and foreground and what size would you recommend in a 125 gallon tank? Thanks again for great video
Thomas B
Thomas B - 8 years ago
What really differentiates back middle and foreground is simply the height of the plants.
Background = Height of the aquarium
Midground = Half height of the aquarium
Foreground = Third height or less of the aquarium

The styles of plants are totally up to you! Whatever tickles your fancy. No way to choose wrong when it comes to personal taste :)

+Thomas B Thanks for advise now I need your help I don't know which aquarium plant  is background , mid ground  and foreground plants. I trust your opinion  in picking out the plants for me. so can you please suggest  an background, mid ground  and foreground  and size. I select both end of the tank  and build cave and cliffs  and keep the middle open for them to swim.  I be doing 5 background 5 mid ground  and 12 foreground like you suggest. the list of product on the video  I don't see green clover mat. thanks Thomas I look forward to the list of plants you pick so I can order them.
Thomas B
Thomas B - 8 years ago
+Audrey Woods It will really depend on the look you are going for. Fronts are going to get big, and they do appreciate open space. I wouldn't go too crazy with heavily planting, but rather select a few sections in the tank to plant well, and then spread out some forground plants across the entire tank and between rocks. I would say somewhere between 4-5 background, 5-6 midground, and up to 12 foreground plants would be enough to bring some color and texture to your aquascape.

actually they are made from a non porous plastic so not toxic at all.also not all fish can be kept with live plants.there are plenty of fish that will destroy any plant you put in there tank that isn't fake.

also for beginners starting out plastic is the way to go till they advance their fish keeping skills.

Arnav Sinha
Arnav Sinha - 8 years ago
+Tritan I hate plastic plants, but in India, it's not the fish people care about. It's the money. So every possible LFS here is horribly overstocked, no plants, nobody knows any fish properly (zebra danios are sometimes called guppies), etc.. Overall, it's very bad. Real plants are EXTREMELY rare here. So unless you've visited a LFS in India, don't open your trap. There isn't much of a choice given to me.
Tritan

are these safe for goldfishes? because goldfish can grow really long tails and can get stuck on the plants if it has sharp edges
Thomas B
Thomas B - 8 years ago
+nicholas macas Plastic plants are safe for goldfish, however, make sure to choose the fake plants with the fragility of goldfish fins in mind. Avoid spiky, rigid looking plants!

+Jk With The Ak I don't think it would look silly. It could look like a helicopter crashing in the woods/jungle if you put some in the heli or something.

Thanks for the great tips....I've been trying to learn the best way but most of my local pet shops don't have the best selections of plastic plants or drift wood and rocks
Carol Tarantino
Carol Tarantino - 9 years ago
Love the video and the results look awesome.  However, I disagree that you HAVE to have a CO2 system with live plants - check out Diane Walstad's methods with LOW lighting, zero added CO2 and very little maintenance.  She provides a ton of science behind what she does, and there a lots of aquarists who swear by her type of tank.  Just throwing that out there for consideration.
Carol Tarantino
Carol Tarantino - 8 years ago
+Thomas B Makes sense, and with the variety of plastic and silk plants available, one CAN have a gorgeous tank without the live plant hassle. Fake plants are also good for fish who munch on real ones, or insist on rearranging the tank every day.
Thomas B
Thomas B - 8 years ago
+Carol Tarantino Nobody said you have to have CO2; but it is one of the many barriers for folks who want to try their hand at plants. The problem being most people want high light plants with bright reds, oranges, purples etc. and pack their tank full of them. Most often that means CO2 will be required which can be both a financial barrier and overly intimidating. For those who just don't want to go through the process of learning the ins and outs of live plants, I decided to slap this video together to show them how they can get the most out of plastic plants!
Dennis Younger
Dennis Younger - 9 years ago
I doubt fish are dumb enough to eat silk.  Instead of cleaning just buy new silk plants.
Plastic plants always look like plastic.  Just my opinion and I suspect many others too.
Thomas B
Thomas B - 9 years ago
+Dennis Younger Not all of us out there want to waste money on repurchasing plants over and over, its also not greenest way to look at things! Why create more waste when you can purchase something that will go much further for you? At the end of the day, if the esthetics of silk plants tickle your fancy more than plastic, stick with silk!
As for fish eating silk plants; it does happen. Namely with algae eaters or fish with a plant based diet like goldfish. Silk plants with a thin algae film are going to taste like food to these fish, and they can and will try to eat them. A quick google search will give you more than a handful of first hand accounts (via forums) of this happening.
Dennis Younger
Dennis Younger - 9 years ago
Not one word about  silk plants.   They are so much better than the oldtyme hard plastic ones like your selling.
Thomas B
Thomas B - 9 years ago
+Dennis Younger We try to avoid silk plants to be honest. Silk plants are not a great option when dealing with any algae or plant eating fish because they tend to get nibbled and fray. This can lead to fish ingesting the fibers of the silk plants which can potentially be fatal. They also tend to be more fragile when cleaning, and do not take well to being scrubbed. Plastic plant longevity can't be beat!

what about low tech tanks. people hardly pay anything on them and some still look nice
Thomas B
Thomas B - 8 years ago
+Ironiic zero Low tech planted tanks are still more work than plastic plants. Often people have a hard time keeping ferts, light, and even minimal co2 in balance, which leads to a crummy looking aquarium. I love low tech and high tech planted aquariums and have lots of experience with both. We may do a video in the future that highlight planted aquariums!

+Abel Olvera Tank looks great! Your tank is pretty tall, and you could certainly put a few more tall plants in that reach closer to the surface. That will help to make it look full and hide some of the hardware.

+Big Al's | Video on Demand would take pictures, but they may be better suited as "before" pics and might clearly point out why i needed to watch this video. Love those moss covered rocks. . Are those fake too ?
I have a mix of fake and real in my tank because the fish uproot the real ones..and I find that if i bunch them with the plastic they get a chance to root up ... giving them a fighting chance.
