I need your help and I just realized you are a great person to ask. I've been doing research for a couple months (love your channel) and looking to get my first saltwater tank. I keep going back and forth between the JBJ 45 RL or the SCA PNP 50 gallon. Since you have now had experience with both of them I would love to here your thoughts and advice on which one to go with. I've been also watching Antonio's Eat_Sleep_Reef channel and love his tank. I also love Inappropriate Reefer's tank which is close to the SCA setup. It seems the JBJ would be a simpler AIO system but the SCA will give more volume and more room for equipment. The SCA will also have a lot more room for aquascaping, corals, and fish, but it sounds like it will require me to figure out how to do my own plumbing and modify the sump (remember this is my first saltwater tank). I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks!

Trihope140.6 if I could do it again I would have went with the SCA 50 because you have the entire tank avail as usable space. The jbj has the 45 gallon footprint but the build in sump cuts off a lot of the space. They both will work but for a longer term the SCA would be better. U don't have to modify the sump the cube style sump design will work and plumbing can be easy or hard as u wanna make it. Soft hosing being the easiest and pvc being the hardest...

Man I was amazed when you actually made a cardboard mock-up of the tank . You'll like Pukani Rocks that's what I have. But get ready for phosphate leaching out of them. But no worries it just part of the slow process! Can't wait to see it wet and cycled!!

Nice vid CJ! I used acrylic rods that i got at Home Depot and cut them down to about 4 or 5 inches and used them as a skeleton to lock my rocks. I also cemented them, so you can't see the rods, except in the back, bottom part of my rocks. This will help lock them in place, with the rocks being so porous the rods slipped right into the holes with a little bit of cement then more cement to actually join the rocks. My rock structure was super strong, i even have 3 small overhangs.

Scape looks amazing, since you have a canopy you should take advantage of it by adding some retro t5 units maybe 2 bulbs at the front and back each for maximum light spread and your corals will love you for it!

tricky question.. that rock starts white but will turn color when it turns live... end of the day whatever you choose will be covered with corals and coraline algae so just use whats best for your tank

Nice work CJ!! I had a saltwater tank in the late 80's for about 5 years.. Then I got out of it because of a mishap with my heater... :( Anyway, I'm getting back into it, but so much has changed. To help me ease back in a couple of months I'm setting up a 50 gallon Red Sea Reefer in my bedroom as a reef tank. So when I finish my basement next summer I would have a better idea of on setting up the 280 gallon custom FOWLR tank i'm putting in. Keep the vids coming!!! I gotta a lot to absorb!!!

It's so cool how much you learn actually building a tank. I have learned so much in the last year. Also I have to say CJ this build is absolutely awesome. You are doing a great job. Teaching me a lot along the way. I am going to keep working on mine for another year learning as I go. No matter how much I learn from you. Making my own mistakes is part of the process lol. Good stuff CJ, throw some really dark black sand in there and I'm not talking about that wanna be black aragonite I see that ends up looking more grayish either. I have some really dark black fine sand that is heavy so it doesn't get blown around with high current and I'll tell you man if you want your corals to pop color wise dark black sand is the way to go and I've had all different types of sand in my various tanks over the years.

9StickNate 15 mins until it hardens.. but I let it cure 48hrs before moving the structures

Fantastic update, I really like your thoughts on (if it's ugly for 3-6-8 months so be it) I see so many posts on FB groups where people say things like "my tanks been running 6 weeks why are my corals dying"
You take a look at the bigger picture on a realistic time scale, happy reefing man.

Perfect!!. As the rock turns live, it will turn gray, and you will never see the stone fix. Perfect scape to go with maxspect gyre.

its personal preference... wouldn't hurt anything if they are. I like easy access for cleaning the glass later down the road.. also helps flow go around the tank easier

Great looking scape. My next tank will be a fresh start for sure. I like the idea of keeping my old rock and livestock but there is something to be said aquascaping with dry rock. Well done man
