Where I live, this stuff is found everywhere. Even on the side of the road. It's limestone that's been carved by river water - hence all the many holes. Because it's "soft" you can make adjustments to the edges to make them fit better/safer to prevent tumbling. Also, you should set your aqua scape up before you lay in your substrate because cichlids will dig up the foundation and possibly be crushed under falling rock. Or, your glass will shatter.

The fish are likely to be ok but I get upset watching the iching so I prefer gravel.

Ive used coral rock for my cichlid tank, but my cichlids always scratch/cut up the sides of there body from it.... You don't run into that problem with that rock??

no, I have had problems with it going anoxic over time. short term it is fine
