Greg Whittstock is a very good artist. Not a pond expert. If everything you know about ponds you learned from him, you are no expert either.

If Koi do not have 3+ feet(many experts say 4+) of water they will not get enough exercise. If the bottom foot or more of water is not being circulated, this means low oxygen levels. Not good for the fish for more reasons. One being the obvious, but also, this is breading ground for bad (anaerobic) bacteria. Many diseases. I have never built a Koi pond of less than 3 feet, most 4 or more. Nor have I ever built a Koi pond without a bottom drain. Which means no gravel in the bottom.

Let's start off with the obvious. The bottom is covered with rock. This means problems. Obviously there is no bottom drain. With no bottom drain, you either have a pond that is 2 feet deep or less, with is not good for full grown Koi, or you have the bottom several inches or feet of water not being circulated, with is bad for many reasons.

All of these ponds and their surroundings are done to perfections. I keep on a much smaller scale and that can give enough pleasures and work but it is a time consuming hobby and you always find time to dream for more or improvements. It,s a pleasure just to leave it to work alone!
