Awsome, Fuzzy.  Built my own thanks to you.  Bought a yoga mat, cut it up to mats on the bottom of the top and bottom crate to keep things from falling through.  You might consider that.  You did great, though.

Hi, just stumbled across this video whilst searching kayak stuff! Really well thought out, useful and I think it looks crate too! Appreciate the effort of filming, editing and great instructional. In the process of researching which kayak to buy, soooooo many options, although less so than the U.S. I think. Have subscribed and look forward to more of your videos.

Thank Fuzzy i just built mine tonight and it turned out great! just one question, so if you flip over the point is for the bungees to hold the crate in? cause i was thinking what if the crate comes out and sinks?
retrodog63
retrodog63 - 7 years ago
At the beginning of the video, the intro photos are just a bunch of macho manly stuff. You need at least one with some needle point or playing bingo.

Great video though. You made me re-think my crate. I'm now sold on this design. I hadn't thought about the top part being used like that. I'm also thinking about some sort of lid for the top, for when you need to get into the bottom. Hmmm...

Seems like it would've been better to cut the bungee in the middle, than at one end. That way you could use the other end for something else.

Hey Fuzzy, I loved your video and built my own following your instructions. It turned out perfectly. In my center tube, I stuffed it with a foam wrap, made it perfect to stick my orange triange warning flag (on a fiberglass poll). Thanks for the tips, it was easy to follow and a great end product!

Great milk crate ideas, thanks, Fuzzy! One of the best things about milk crates is that they're made of HDPE plastic, and the piece you have left over from making your crate lid can be cut up, chopped up (with an old, thrift store blender,) melted with a heat gun, and formed into blocks or sheets you can use to make, well...whatever you want! You can saw, file, sand, drill, turn, or do anything with it that you can do to wood, and you can do it with regular woodworking tools! The possibilities are endless!
James TheDoctor Duncan
James TheDoctor Duncan - 7 years ago
Fuzzy Outdoors TV really? Cool! Glad I could turn you on to it, as I'm guessing you'll probably make some great future videos about it. Some have made forms from 2X4s, and others just use bread pans, cookie sheets, etc. They just use a 2X4, 1X6, or whatever fits best, along with a ratcheting woodworking clamp to compress the hot HDPE. It doesn't turn to liquid, just gets like putty, so you do need to press it down. Have fun, man!

why didn't you add a lid to the smaller upper section?
Fuzzy Outdoors TV
Fuzzy Outdoors TV - 7 years ago
I use the smaller upper section to keep things that I want to access quickly. A lid would hold me back and Im too fat to be swiveling around too much. Ill get wet!
Bill K
Bill K - 7 years ago
One slight suggestion is at 6:34 you cut the tail end of that bungee. Maybe drill another hole in hte top portion and snake it through that second hole and tie another knot. Now you have a bungee to secure things down in the top portion of that crate also...

Great job on the video!...It was well explained and easy to follow.

I have seen other videos on this same subject but your approach is practical and has a smaller footprint when put together. I bet you could probably figure out how to put some kind of lid on the hinged top crate that, in my opinion, would complete this build. As soon as you figure this one out, I will be at the hardware store the day after you release the video. LOL.

I just subscribed to your channel. Good job!

great video brother. i ended up using a motorcycle helmet tie down to put on my crate sadly to say that it has spaced whose. i anchored to the back of kayak to keep the rough water to my back and cast with the current but began to take on water to were when i lean to cast my other rod i feel in and thinking everything in create would be secured the small stuff came out. I also like the idea of tying down the creek to the kayak but dolphin come to my catch inches from my kayak taking in the create the first time. Hopefully third time is a charm thank you for the video I will try this a go.

First of all great video and diy instructable! I plan on making one similar but with some mods due to limited back storage space. I was wondering, what kind of kayak are you running? I'm a big boy just got into kayak camping on the river for fishing trips, so i'm running a lot of gear. that thing looks much more comfie than my sit in old timer (it was free) so I can't complain but yeah need an upgrade soon.

Dig the idea with the lid made from the bottom of another crate. You could even drill holes on the sides towards the top part of the lid and then put bungee cord laced across it to keep stuff on top secured. Kinda like the front or rear of some kayaks already have. Great job man!

+Fuzzy Outdoors TV haha, yeah man! That way if the kayak flips, the rods are taught to the holders and cant even slide out.

Fuzzy Outdoors TV - 8 years ago
I love that idea!

+Fuzzy Outdoors TV definitely! Also, those bungees you use to hold the rods: of you make/have a much shorter version of that, you can clip the carabiner to the very bottom loop on the rod so it stays tight into the holder.

It works very well for this application.

Cool I just bought a lifetime Hydros kayak and the back slopes up and the milk crate looks a little awkward what do you think I should do? Any advice is greatly accepted!

Some people use 5 gallon buckets. this may help or you can use elongated milk crates that you can find on amazon that might help. Last you could build a small wedge to level out the slope then use whatever you want.

I've got two questions. 1. If you wanted it to open the other way, couldn't you just turn the crate around rather than moving the zip ties?
2. With the rod holders facing the back, wouldn't it be harder to reach the "rod leash" when returning the rod to the holder? It just se m that they would hang down from the back of the crate making it a bit more difficult to reach. I did my crate similar to yours but put my rod holders on the sides of the crate, and the zip tie hinges in the rear. But nevertheless it's still an awesome set set up with that green crate.

The good thing is it is able to be made how you want with rods on whatever side you want. I have already changed the direction it opened and now it works better for me personally. I did have a problem reaching the rod leashes but mounted them at the top so now i just grab the base and pull them to me. I have to mount them on the back though due to my kayaks configuration.

great comment and thanks for watching.

Hey Fuzzy. If you were to mount the rod holders on the 'back' of the crate, wouldn't it interfere with the opening of the lid? I imagine that you'd have to cut out a big rectangular section from the lid so that it can open. So maybe your 'mistake' wasn't so bad after all!

I never planned to make them open back toward the rods. I just wanted it opening the opposite direction that I did. I have since changed it and not I just love it. Thanks for the great comment! Very observant!

A good job, however I am not a big fan of the way you have the rod leashes on the rods on the crate, I see the possibility of loosing a rod the the carabiner not firmly attached

I have never lost something because it was not on a lockable Carabiner. The trick I have found is make sure all items are tied to the boat or inside a waterproof bag tied to the boat. Find a way to attach your rods to the carabiner to the rod where it will not come off until you remove it.

Tight Lines

Fuzzy Outdoors TV - 8 years ago
John Thank you very much and I totally agree. I am nervous every time i lock one in. However, I have gone over in some current once since this was filmed and they did hang on. I recovered all of my equipment. As you will see in some upcoming videos I have changed some of them for equipment like a hawg trough and other important items to a lockable carabiner.

All that being said the cheap carabiners i have on there for the rods do work well and are easy to put on and take off.

Any ideas as to an alternate I could use I'm always down to learn something???
