Air is what makes the pipe buoyant. Adding foam reduces the buoyancy of the pipe. Boat manufacturers use it for sound deadening and buoyancy if the hull sinks.

The pipes are more buoyant empty than with foam in them. It is a matter of displacing water , and the foam just makes the pipe heavier, thus less buoyant. If the pipe got a crack then the foam would help keep the water displaced keeping it afloat. The reason some boats (kayaks and canoes) have foam in the bow and stern is in the case of the boat capsizing it would stay somewhat afloat and not sink to the bottom of the lake.

Don't cap the pipes until the foam is dry. It will build up gas pressure and be like a bomb. Trust me that stuff can be dangerous.

dont wanna get too sciency and stuff but putting the foam in the tubes is useless. Its all about how much water you're displacing and not about the materials you're using to do it. its only adding weight using the foam and not providing any more buoyancy. In theory you could even leave the endcaps off aslong as the ends stay above the water. So my toptip: use hollow pipes and leave them empty, seal off the ends for good measure and maybe get some more pipes because you seemed to be lacking some floatyness ;) goodluck with attempt 2 my man

And if I did the math correctly with 2 10ft pipes with 4inch diameter you're looking at about 110lbs of buoyant force, add the endcaps and the wood to that and you'll get a bit more but obviously not enough to keep you afloat. So if you want your rig to work keep in mind that each pipe will support about 50-60lbs of weight. you can figure out the rest ;)

Good idea I'm making one but haven't got the extra money right now been working on making for year now now I do have a pontoon boat just like what your building were your feet in the water or I have a way to get my feet out of the water. But mines 6 ft long but the plug Is so big you stick your fist in it. Yeah. So last year I leaned back was July 29th my birthday camping trip birthdays the 30th. But I flipped the boat back lost my new rod and reel took 10 years to get a new rod and reel I won't buy new cause I always give my rid and reels away so I buy cheaper so I'm able to buy and give more. But my plug popped open it's on top. But I leaned back the pressure of the tub going under water some popped that top. My daughter yelled your sinking I tried to lean forward but with my back can't do that fast it filled I went backwards. I hear splash my daughter dove into the water and was at me before I could come up from going backwards. So got up hranned the boat and few rods and reels of course few were in a holder so they didn't go no we're but my new one done. My daughter was able to help get the boat flipped and to the shore. You no your daughter loves you when you flip a boat and she's to you before your back up I got a great girl. Best 17 years of my life raising her by my self all 17 years only had help 7 months. But hey this ain't about my boat it's yours. I hope you read this far or atleast watch a video here's a man who made one also but with 6in and 4in need 4 pipes unless you get lucky and find 8in pipes. But good job can't weight to see it finished but thanks for good content and nice finds there bet he likes that copper pipe hope he uses for something cool. Have a good week God bless

Pipes are to small. You’ll need to at least double the amount and make it wider so it’s not so hard to balance. Buoyancy=water displacement you need more pvc piping bud. And the foam isn’t needed if it’s fully sealed. But the way you’re drilling and screwing into it it wouldn’t really be fully sealed.. just trash it, there’s a reason people buy them and not make them lmao.

So, the foam has a higher density than air(we know that because it doesn't float in air) meaning adding the foam to a tube of air increased the density of the vessel. A higher density= much less boyant in water.

You should try filling the PVC tubes with helium and then sealing it lmao. The helium would undoubtedly slowly leak out, but it would be very boyant for a few hours.

2 10' tubes gives about 3000 cubic inches if the online calculator I found is right
a cubic inch displaces about .036 pounds of water (thanks again google)
3000x.036= 108 pounds of displacement
To float a 200 pound guy

Those hissing sounds were from the foam expanding and setting up and air pushing through any hole in the pipe. That foam creates a lot of heat to so you guys got lucky it didnt blow the ends off or something crazy!

The foam actually lowers your buoyancy because you're adding weight without adding displacement. Also, that foam absorbs water...

Putting the foam inside the sealed pipe will not make it more buoyant. It will actually just add a little bit of weight and make it less buoyant. It will obviously help in case you lose your seal on the pipes though.

i knew a friends dad that builds his own customized kayak out of pvc tubes and wood planks similar to the way you did but 100% working and much more efficient. The kayak he had has 2 giant or 4 water dispenser bottles as floating devices on both sides as well as to balance the kayak. Though if i recalled correctly, he said the buoyancy of the canoe/kayak depends on the materials and its dimension ( length x width x height ) unless yours is gonna be bottom free and slightly submerged in the water. The guy was like 250lbs ish and he could stand and fish on it. Or you guys should buy a giant raft ( with sails etc ) and have the whole gang fish on it out of bamboo trees or something floatable haha

The bouyance decreased from the spray foam because you increase the density of the tube. The higher you make the density the smaller the buoyancy will be. The only way to make the kayak float is to get rid of the foam and use more tubes or wider tubes.

The foam doesn’t help with buoyancy, it’s all about water displacement. all the foam is doing is adding weight. You need new pipes and I would do four pipes two on each side. That will help with the balance

if you let the expanding foam dry and expand in the pipes evenly it should float much better. Another thing that would have worked better is if you would have filled the pipes with air instead of foam. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Foam in boats is more emergency floatation in the case that the boat fills up or capsizes. Inflatable bladders would be a better idea in case of leakage of the pipes. To increase buoyancy you need to increase the volume without increasing the weight.

A light weight material you could use for making a cheap boat like that,is rigid insulation foam board. It will still float even if it's punctured. Where I live I can get 8'x4'x4" sheets for little over 30$. Probably need 2 sheets at the most for a boat. I love this kind of creativity! Rock on!

You wasted your money on the foam. If water can't get into the pipes, all you did was add weight. Think about it. I don't mean to be a peckerhead. I did this once with my very first boat, thinking that it would add flotation. The more foam you add to a closed air system, is only more weight to sink it. Basically as long as your tubes are watertight, that's the best you're gonna get out of those tubes. Think about anything inflatable. River rafts are not full of foam. Container ships are not full of foam.

Mats Lundberg risking getting banned if it's to scary? You were right until you said that dumb ending. He was in no danger of being banned and this was a year ago before the new rules around guns on YouTube so you could pretty much do anything besides kill someone with a gun at that point. Plenty of channels had lots of subs and were making bank during that time only doing gun/shooting videos. It was the demonitization if I remember correctly and it's more because of the content of the stories than anything. It was only a couple months ago they changed the gun rules on YouTube btw.

Last I heard he said that the cost of the trips were coming out of his pocket. I don’t really understand that since the cost of everything for his channel comes out of his pocket. Maybe he straightened it out later but I’m really not sure.

fill the middle the kayak with pipes and put 2x4 going out of each side and put a pipe at the end of it. You should search up Canoe or kayak stabilizer kit as an example so you know what I'm trying to say.

Speaking in strictly construction terms (promise :), the difference between screwing something and nailing it can be pretty dramatic. If you are just wanting to prove concept, drop the foam and drop to 20 schedule PVC to save money and weight. With the extra money, buy more PVC, double up the pontoons (vertically would provide more buoyancy but less stability), and stick with the straps. You guys all looked like you needed more beer...which is also considered an accessory.

the expanding foam would not help the buoyancy because the PVC pipe is still the same surface area on the outside. If anything, you made the buoyancy worse for the pipes by making them heavier! Still a great video though,. keep up the awesome uploads my man
