The Sundolphin Aruba 10 is highly recommended for use in the sea? You can't be serious. Don't even attempt that unless it is very calm and you don't plan on going more then 100 feet from shore. I have a Sundolphin at a vacation home. For flat inland ponds, lakes and streams it is fine. With the big open cockpit and no flotation or sealed bulkheads a wave breaking over it could flood the boat. Forget about self rescue. Swim it to shore, dump out the water and get back in.
An inflatable kayak is to be used in very protected waters with very low or no wind. With a light breeze you get out of it and leave it in the water it will blow off and you may not be able to catch it. This is another stay close to shore boat. it may not submerge like the Sundolphin but hitting something in the water or getting snagged by someone surf fishing and you could lose a lot of air and buoyancy. An ACA instructor I trained with says don't buy an inflatable. Still, if used within it's limits it's fine and can be a fun day on the water. And of course, if you have no place to store a hard kayak, even a small one like the Sundolphin, this could be your answer. Deflate it, put it in your car, take it home and you can store it in a closet.
I tried the Sundolphim Journey 10 sit on top kayak. I liked it. Paddling wise it was comparable to the sit in Sundolphin. It also has had the benefit of scupper drains. Water getting into the boat from an errant wave or even paddle splash will drain out. It may also have an air space between the inner and outer hulls making it lees likely to swamp and submerge. I'm not really sure of that though. I bought the sit in because it was in stock at Wal Mart and was a lot cheaper. I figured for my little local ponds and streams use either one would suffice.
The kids kayak is for kids. Let then have fun with it but as with all kids activities, give them some use guidelines and keep an eye on them.
I don't intend to sound mean but the video comes off as a production by someone reading specs out of brochures and doesn't know the first thing about kayaking. Trying to come off as an expert when one isn't really just makes it more difficult for newbies to get good advice. The Sun Dolphin? Really? Probably one of the least safe boats out there if you get into any kind of situation that doesn't involve flat water. Selecting a kayak is all about matching the needs of the user to the correct boat. Kayaks can be quite specific in their abilities and no single kayak can do it all. The extremes of flat water to white water or recreational vs surfing vs camping etc. all things come into play when choosing. To do this topic justice you would be best served to have a separate list for each type of kayaking recreational, white water, day touring, expedition/sea. Granted there will be some overlap in places as most boats can handle more than one thing but never everything.
