11' Foam Kayak!

Made from 1.5" EPS foam (@32 sq ft). Surfaces are 2 layers laminated together using Great Stuff spray foam and low temp hot glue. Once the general shape is established, I carve away the excess with a wire brush and then sand everything smooth with 60 grit sand paper. So far this project has cost $22 in foam (direct from the manufacturer)and 3 cans of spray foam (@$24)! Less than $50! THAT'S A LOW PRICE!

Also, I made sure to overlap the seams. This prevents any 'creaks and groans' or noises while inside. The spray foam makes all the difference... it's like it was welded together!
As for the skin... just layers of latex paint (put on thick) layer of cloth (anything thin and absorbant, even a bed sheet. I did 2 layers of each, 1 layer of dark blue (to seal in the cloth)then added a layer of wood glue (brushed on)to the bottom.
After I make the required repairs, I may coat the entire thing with wood glue for good measure.
My confidence in what it can handle is building... Calgary's Bow River is pretty tame... there is a class 2 rapid in one spot downtown, and a couple class 1 rapids here n there.
As for the sea... the less openings, the better... longer and leaner maybe. Mine is based on a fishing/recreational style kayak. Not good for oceans, big waves or strong rapids.
Let me know if you post a vid.
Cheerz.
I'm also planning an overnight tent trip where I put this kayak to the test with camping gear and food /water.
Thanks for watching and pls sub for updates!
The outer skin was just poor man's fiberglass (paint and cloth. The paint was from the Habitat for Humanity Restore ($25) and the cloth was from the Dollar store ($3). I won't Dryvit it, but the thought did cross my mind. I also probably won't fiberglass this one and just call it a prototype.

So go on, kick off your shoes, put your feet up, lean back and just enjoy the melody (ooweeooo). After all, music soothes even the savage beast.

If, in a video, I don't like the music, the wind, power tools or other loud sound... I simply turn the sound down... but I never comment on it because once it's uploaded...well... its kinda hard to find a parking spot on the information super highway!
no accounting for bad taste.

Haha I'm 40 as well! SOAD rocks and Ozzy Fudd... come on! la la la la la la la la laaa ooweeooo !!
awesome video...music.....
Any EPS company would probably carry something similar. These bags of foam (2'x 4' x 16 pieces) were only $22cdn! $160 ore more at Home Depot. They have minor defects or density variations though out... they don't recommend acrylic stucco application (normally sold for) as some areas may not adhere properly. .. but it works great for boat building!
probably about 100 hrs. She floats and tracks perfectly! Total cost: $92.00!
Thank me.
foam $22
spray foam x 3 $30
paint $25
fleece $6 (dollarama)
$83!!!
Hand holds are installed at the front and back of the Yak and 'poor man's fiberglass' is applied to all sides of the exterior with extra layers on the bottom for reinforcement. I used thin fleece from the dollar store (which was sold as a 'frost protection fabric' for plants)combined with exterior latex paint the finally a layer of wood glue to seal ever thing in!!!
