Herb Coswell The Second a kayak with a front bow that is dagger shaped with well sealed front hatches like a Ocean Kayak Trident or Viking Kayak are my favorites. Might be able to find used Ocean Kayak Tridents since the model has been out for long time. Friends in Hawaii use them regularly. I own the Viking Profish Reload Z and it is phenomenal but likely not the cheapest boat to get the job done. Avoid Pelicans and Sundolphins for surf as they currently only make really flat bow shaped boats which don’t cut through waves well (hull slap) and will rather catch waves and throw you off. I would say keep an eye out for used Ocean Kayak Tridents or similar Kayaks. Pay close attention to hatch in the bow as it will be prone to water intrusion. A good tight hatch will be ok. Some companies have bad hatch designs for surf. Viking has by far the best hatch design for surf as it is further back near paddler and has deflectors to prevent water from getting under hatch lid. Never had water inside my Viking yet.

Love Bonafide but Compass is awesome too! Very difficult decision. If you go Bonafide buy via your local outfitters store or on our online store that has free reliable freight shipping. Other stores lately such as ACK have been damaging Bonafides during shipping per reports on Facebook. The link we have in video description uses two reliable dealers and great shipping company. If you have more money the Compass is nice due to pedal drive. Pedals equal hands free for fishing. Else Bonafide is one of the best paddling fishing kayaks with the exception of offshore surf launching which has yet to be thoroughly tested. For surf launches I like low seat profiles and sleek narrow hull kayaks like my Viking Profish Reload Z.

Then I completely failed you in representing the kayak via the video. In terms of other kayaks in it's size and category class I would say it is one of the best on the market that I have tested. I have NO vested interest in making that claim and I don't make anything from Bonafide. I am not even saying that as an attempt to gain future sponsorship from Bonafide. I am just saying that because based on my past experience with other popular fishing kayaks it has excellent stability without being a cumbersome slow paddling barge. However, I still respect your opinion after viewing the video. In other kayak stability videos see where folks have their feet and weight. I had all my 195lbs of weight on one side of the Bonafide and still didn't flip. I had to do that and put my head outside of gunnels to start flipping. Fact is most folks aren't going to do that during normal use.

Good stability is a must for a fishing kayak with it you can overtun unwanted situation, you cant standup easly! His Catamaran/trimaran setup is the way ! larger kayak are bad for paddling but if have a propeller setup there is no problems!
Flat stern give furter stability and give a easy fitting for motor if you need
I hate outrigger setup because they can hinder my line when fish is near.
I think in a future we see fishing kayak resemble always more like bassboat .
I like it very much!

Then it sounds like you have found a kayak that is a good fit for you. I think you would notice a difference in stability vs Eagle Talon. Primarily in secondary stability. However, if you don’t need more stability then it doesn’t really matter. Eagle Talon is also a great paddlecraft and seems to fit your needs well. Tight lines!

Question. Have you used the Perception Pescador Pilot 12 yet? What's your thoughts? I'm 6'2" and around 255lbs. I'm settling on Bonafide, but that pedal drive is sure tempting!

You can flip absolutely any kayak if you try hard enough. Camera angles make huge difference in perception of stability. Basically the entire side gunnels are at water level before it flips. I can also put my feet on one side of kayak and not flip. At some points in video it looks incredibly impressive and other areas it looks simply ok to untrained eye...or those who haven’t tried a lot of kayaks. The camera angles matter. Basically in any normal use by even bigger boys/gals this kayak will not be flipping. I feel like you have to try to flip it. If you follow the rule of keeping head inside the gunnel area I don’t think you could flip it even if your weight is shifted.

Look at how straight you are tracking without a rudder. That was the first thing I noticed. Tipping wasn't an option...I tested it with Ice on the water.

It did track insanely straight without a rudder. I was quite surprised by that as well. I thought for sure it would walk left/right when paddling that hard, but it didn’t.

You could always mount a Torqeedo or Bixpy Jet on stern. The kayak has mounting inserts for a power pole which could easily be used to mount one of those motors instead with a custom made mount. If you don’t have money for Bixpy or Torqeedo you could make a customized trolling motor transom mount via the power pole mount inserts on stern.

You should do that test in the high seat position. It would probably be a bit easier to dump from the high position. But still more difficult than other kayaks.

Funny thing is totally forgot about high position because the seat already felt pretty high. I’ve been paddling a kayak which sits much lower the past few weeks. In hindsight I wish I had but with the few video tests you should be able to gauge the breaking point of the secondary stability even without the high position test. Nearly all the top of gunnel is flush with water just before break of the secondary stability. At least that is what it appears. I slowed footage to analyze. Basically the kayak stability exceeds my ability to stay on the craft in many cases. For example in seated test I leaned so far that the kayak tilts and I almost slide off the chair despite kayak being still stabilized by secondary stability.

Correct. If in higher position i maybe could have paddled faster. Regardless folks should be able to gauge at what point this kayak’s secondary stability giveaway to flipping. I tried to slow footage down and analyze video to show at what angle and position in flips from. My consensus is the average person isn’t going to flip this kayak with typical use. I don’t think I would flip it any other way except intentionally. As well as it paddles I think I could power through surf pretty decent. Hatches didn’t seem to let water in despite multiple flips in video. I didn’t check inside but I don’t recall hearing water when lifting it out of water. So pretty solid boat. In hindsight I wish I would have adjusted seat and shown high low stability but at end of the day if I can stand on back with feet on one side of boat that kind of says it all. That is why I called Luther at Yakattack (Bonafide owner) a magician in the kayaking industry. The hull

design does so many things well. Rarely do you get excellent stability, speed, tracking, and comfort all in one.
Most of the kayaks would get one out of the four right. Bonafide seems to have been able to provide all four in their design.

Very nice kayak for the money. Don’t take my word for it. We want the videos to speak for themselves. I will say it is very well built and has robust well made accessories/hardware. The fit and finish is buttery smooth and well done. For example the area on the kayak where the two mold halves come together during manufacturing process is simply beautiful. The people who build this boat definitely take pride in every detail. It is significantly better than the prototype version I fell in love with at iCAST 2017. They made some adjustments and now the finished product looks great. They come in several different color schemes (Amazon.com/Shop/KayakDIY). Not sure which color I like best. They honestly all look great.

The only thing I can't stand about this kayak, is their expectation to fish standing BEHIND the seat. Awkward as hell.

I am 6ft 2in and didn’t feel too awkward behind the seat standing. You can stand in front of seat for those not comfortable with the elevated rear standing pads. I like to SUP paddle and so it feels pretty natural for me. I do think a 240cm paddle helps from that position. Just depends on the paddler. I could see myself maybe using that elevated paddle position in the mangrove flats by my place. That is about it. Just nice to have options.

Would love to put one on! It would do great I'm sure. I have a sail company in mind but need to work out a deal with the company....Got to reduce channel costs...helps to occasionally get free samples. The sails I have in mind work well but run about $500 I believe.
