Also, so far as getting in or out, if there is something to hold onto on the dock itself, then grab onto it. In this vid, there was a part of the deck that she could have grabbed onto but didn't. Although, not all decks have this convenience

Dude I saw the vid where your dry bag was taken by the bear, don't put your wallet in your dry bag anymore, bad idea. Better to lose your lunch rather than your wallet.

These rules are way too much for recreational kayaking for beginners. Simple. Don't lean too far. Use full strokes. Sit up straight. All this stuff should be learnt much later, when confidence has grown. But that's just my humble opinion...

Golden rule of kayaking in the ocean. Do not kayak in the ocean if you are not experienced and outfitted properly. We have fatalities frequently around here from folks playing in the ocean and finding out with their lives. Boating over water always has the risk of drowning but a lot of folks do not take this seriously....they just want to be cool and have fun and that leads to trouble.

My Pungo is working just fine. I did a 40 mile trip in one day with no problem. Also playing around in Buzzards Bay you can start out in flat water and then you have 3 to 4 foot swells to play in. I am comfortable with my sit in.

Paddling on the north Atlantic coast is a whole different story again :-P 2 meter waves and a strong current teach you how to maintain balance within 5 minutes or you flip over. Trying to steer with such over-dramatized body movements may work on a lake but out at sea you´re going to have a bad time.

You already have an Old Town commercial built into the video do you really need the mandatory 30 second commercial for the product that I never intend to buy again (GM). Now that I know I'll avoid Paddle TV.

+Rachel Nopé No. There are still a lot of people who share things about the hobbies they love and don't see Youtube as another revenue source to be exploited. It is definitely trending that way though. Vimeo is growing every day because of it. I just think it is extra greedy to double dip on the ads.

Then you might just want to avoid YouTube all together... It's a 30 second ad, I'm sure you'll live..

When actually paddling I noticed the examples don't have anywhere near the spinal rotation as the over dramatization. It's not all spinal rotation, but a combination.  You feel it when you hit the right combo ... last week I had my Old Town Predator mx in up to a two foot chop and 30 knot breeze ... a very stable craft, and I had plenty of upper and lower body movment going!

I can definitely sympathize with you on the carry/load back on the car after. I don't notice how much work I've put into paddling till I get out and carry the kayak back to my car. Sorry to hear about that fall, I can only imagine how much that had to hurt. Let alone the humiliation if anyone was around. I don't know if my story tops that, but I've taken my kayak out a few times. I felt confident getting in and out of my kayak without much trouble. Last time I went to get out I tried to do it as I've seen videos on instructions/tips for getting in and out. Well long story short, my hand rolled on the paddle as I was hoisting myself up to get out, and I lost my balance. Needless to say I fell out of my kayak into the water tipping it as I went. A few hundred yards away were a family with young kids fishing on the dock. I'm pretty sure I could hear laughter coming across the way. And if I'm honest, I probably would have laughed too. I was a little banged up from hitting the bottom, but my main concern was my pride. lol. It was embarrassing, but we all have to learn. Just some of us learn the hard way. haha Take care!

+SimplyGeneric I'm in Wisconsin. Watch that you're sitting dead center. Watch whether there's a wind or not. If it's coming from the left, it's going to seem like your kayak is pulling left. I either have to kind of zig-zag my course (let it go into the wind, then readjust my course over and over) or sit with the kayak heeled over to the left constantly. Also spend more time paddling on the left. Or combination of all. I've had an intense learning process with a used kayak too. Last trip (Saturday) I was carrying it to the car and fell on my ass, with the boat then falling on me. Pretty banged up. I'm always better at carrying it before the trip than after, when I'm all tired out. Best...

I know how you feel. I thought I was going crazy. Mine pulls to the left as well. What state are you in? I'm also a beginner, and looking for friends who enjoy recreational/fishing kayaking. I'm in Georgia. In my early 30's. I have a cheap kayak, because I didn't want to buy a really expensive/nice one till I felt like this would be something I'd want to do time and time again. And since I'm likely to bang it up a little learning how to load/unload and so forth. Once I feel confident and I'm positive this is something I will do on a regular basis, I'll save up for something a lot nicer. Best of luck to you! You're not alone, that's for sure. Take care!

+VanHalensBelt Thank you so much for taking your time to tell me this.Yes I am a beginner,I have had a kayak for about 5 years, but now I have two,and I have only been in the water about 6 times.I tried to get my friends to go kayaking with me,but they say it's too scary.I have to get a new set of friends now.Your name is cool,I use to skate to "Jump."
VanHalensBelt
VanHalensBelt - 10 years ago
Are you a beginner? I am, and I was finding that I always pulled to the right. I finally found that I was always sitting just a little to the left. You really have to be careful about sitting dead center. Then you will find that you can steer the boat quite easily by leaning to the outside: you want to go back right, so paddle on the left while leaning the boat to the left. Takes practice and confidence but it will be a great breakthrough when you get it. I was for me. I figured it out after putting about 70 miles on my kayak. Good luck.

Actually, they all are. It's just not being exaggerated... it's being done naturally. Just because the arms are moving, it doesn't mean the power isn't coming from the torso. FYI: 4 of the 5 paddlers in this video are World Champion Kayakers!

Thanks for another great kayaking lesson. I will use this on my Kayak the Bay Facebook page for my renters. My biggest advice is to just go out an DO IT. Don't over think this. It takes time, you will still be able to get some great paddling in.
