Only thing is that in South Carolina the Dept of Natural Resources states any water craft with an engine must be registered. Which means you pay tax every year for your motorized kayak. Haha, no thanks. Cool idea though. Wish I lived elsewhere

Lake are usually regulated and if it did not come with a decal stating the motor and house power rating you would never get this into a lake in Montana. Any boat with a propeller has to have license with dmv - boat registration lettering and a title. I have seen fishing pontoons that cost $200 and they had a electric trolling motor on it so they had all the registration lettering on it and had to title the little craft. Of course if you don’t big large meaty tickets are on the way.

The hull sucks, you can plane an 8 ft avon with bottom boards with a 5 horse. Take out the rear rocker, give it a sharper release and it will go a lot quicker.
Brandon Hoffman

If you can get that thing up to 55 you just might have a working time machine! Nice job and nice build. If not just for the badass seat upgrade! Its just like my hunting chair mod. You basically take a swiveling camo boat seat and a scissoring collapsible hunting stool, fabricate a base for the swivel chair that works with the stool base using aluminum bar stock (round or flat) for sliders so it can still collapse. And you have one heck of a comfy hunting chair. The swivel really helps to scout the horizon for birds while seated comfortably behind a blind/cover.

All you need to do is get someone with a scanner to scan the motor mount.... Then upload to a 3D Printer. Print out the motor mount after making any adjustments you need. Save the File. Send it in to have it made out of Hard Plastic/PVC or your choice of Material. Get it produced and sell the motor mount online (In an online store) for that particular Kayak. You could do several Kayak Motor mount kits for various different kayaks.... $_________.00 For the Kit. + Shipping.

kind of reminds me of the time I was with my uncle on the Colombia river, we could hearing something coming up the river it was the sound of an outboard running wide open but then every once in a while you would hear the motor screaming zing zing zing followed by a loud slapping sound all the sudden this guy goes by our little 12 foot row boat looked like he was sitting on a 2X12 with 125 mercury outboard strapped to the back the zinging noise was when he hit a roller in the water and came almost out of the water followed by a slap as the hull hit again.

Interesting build nothing ventured nothing gained

I had one 3.5hp Tohatsu custom dolphin, stainless steel custom mount & 3 gallon aluminum tank with a fuel water separation, cracked my hull as I didn't have it supported good enough on the trailer as it sat between seasons. It was fun as nothing like it was around but now I just got an inflatable and that is just better for open water and bringing guests. However, I was getting 8 MPH with 2 people in a 13.5' kayak loaded down with fuel & food for the day.

Ok, you had your fun. I admit I was entertained by the idea and the build. I even looked forward to the sea trials. Now , take it apart. You have spoiled the quiet, non invasive, human propulsion, at one with the natural world ideals of Kayaking with a dependence of fossil fuels. A dependance that will quite possibly be the downfall of humanity. What's next? Round boats? I am far from a purist ( I do have pedal drive due to bad shoulder) but I think you have gone too far. BTW can I reserve a rental of 5 HP Pelican for next weekend. There are some fishing spots I want to hit that are too far to paddle from launch ;-)

I still remember the first video I watched when you had your red little kayak and you turned it into an angler kayak. You inspired me so I bought for mothers day a ascend purple kayak. I ended up joining a kayak club that fishes in the Chesapeake. I enjoyed all your videos. Until the day I had back problems. It's gotten worse and now my kayak just sits in the backyard and I grow depressed missing kayaking. Missing fishing. Now I might sell my beloved purple. Stay healthy and stay strong. I just got an MRI to find out what is going on. I go to Mercy spine center on the 24th this month so wish me luck. I want so badly to be back in the water fishing again. Now you own a ton of kayaks. God bless you, sir. Maybe someday I would ask you to rig mine if I keep it to have a little higher seat since I can not squat now.

14-16 mph ... look like it is the motor+propeller max limit. Most probably you will get ~13mph by 2.5hp ... so ... conclusion no reason to put 5hp on a small boat because of the speed limit by the motor itself.

There’s just some places a motor shouldn’t be allowed. Like those inlets with the mangroves and manatees. To keep it serene. I hate enjoying a peaceful day out there only to have some guy tearing though there with no respect for the peace of being in nature.

You have no idea how much I agree with you. There are 20 to 30 foot boats making enormous wakes in this river, smiling and waving to each other as they go with no regard for anyone. I, myself felt pangs of guilt in my lil motorized kayak, worrying about whether I'd see a manatee in time to slow down.

The chines are “soft” or rounded. Fine for a kayak that’s meant to be paddled in displacement mode but terrible for planning. Rounded chines sticks or holds the boat deeper in the water. Well placed abs sheet could help sheen the water away instead of it rolling around the corners. You got another 5 mph with a better hull and prop.

Just me Just me - 4 years ago
Just a suggestion man....... Propellers are like a bike sprocket, have one too small and you can't pedal up hills. Have one too big and on flat ground you are pedaling like mad to go walking speed. With your kayak being so light and have so little drag you might benefit a lot from going with another prop with a steeper pitch. Find the right pitch and you can increase your top end and efficiency without loosing a lot on your bottom end acceleration. There is a kind of formula out there where you go at a particular rpm and if the boat speed is above or below a certain expected speed then a change to a different prop pitch would be warranted.

Great intro, and the fast-forward work pace is always kinda funny, especially when you say stuff. I was hoping to put some load bearing pontoons both fore and aft on a canoe(add waterline and still be able to paddle) along with a 15hp. But I'm broke, does a quad-toon canoe sound like fun? You could have a couple decent live wells, maybe get over 20kts, sleep onboard, and carry more fuel than a skiff.

Fantastic job! Many years ago my buddies and I put a 9 1/2 hp johnson on an 8' dingy. We had a eye screw in each side of the transom and fished ropes through them to the engine. We had to sit backwards in the boat with the remote gas tank tethered in the bow.

When we sped up, we had to lean toward the engine as we did not have a twist grip on it (low funds), so we hit the gas and leaned back, towards the bow to get it on plain. Steering seemed backwards pulling on the lines, but we learned fast. Anyway it really went and was a hoot. Thanks for the video - takes me back to some great times.

Have you taken the 'big boat' out recently? Need to run those engines. Also, how is the rental business going?

Thanks again, Marty.
PDGearhead
PDGearhead - 4 years ago
Marty, glad to hear you get a chance to run the 'big boat'. You probably know this, but assuming your engines are fresh water cooled, there are sacrificial anodes in the heat exchangers and need to be checked and replaced often, otherwise the heat exchangers will develop leaks and then replacement (expensive). There is probably a zinc plate on the transom as well.

Anyway, love the videos and so happy to hear the business is doing well. and thanks for responding to my comment.

Your friend that sells the round boats must really be a good guy. You wrecked 2 of his boats, used a ton of Starboard and hardware. Wouldn't have been much easier to get a small skiff ? Also you have to register it because of the motor. Otherwise great video.

Fun project. Your state doesn't require numbers on powered vessels? Up here once you put a motor on anything it's legally a boat. I put a trolling motor on a canoe back in the day, had to get numbers, reg stickers, etc.
