The mother could have been killed and the baby knew it. It showed what it does to hide, but when the boys left, it left with them because it did not want to get hunted by a predator.

I know you guys meant well but you should have just paddled faster and the fawn would have swam back to shore to wait for his mother's return. Then, not only did you pick it up but you then rubbed your scent all over it with your t-shirt. That can lead a predator right to him. New born fawns don't have a scent. That's why their mothers will leave them hidden while they go off to graze returning only long enough for feedings. You should add, 'this is what not to do should you encounter a lone fawn in the woods', to your description.

Fyi, calling fish and wildlife about an animal that is abundant in nature and not in danger of extinction is a futile effort. They might just give you advice about what to do, which is generally to leave it where you found it. They aren’t going to come check it out for you. They don’t have enough staff to go check on deer, raccoons, squirrels, coyotes etc. they will look into wildlife that are protected like certain birds of prey, wolves, wildcats.

Its mom was on the other side thats why the fawn kept heading into the water was tryin to get to the other side. Next time watch see what what way the fawn is going. It will tell you what way its trying to go.

I've always heard that once the baby has human scent on it, the mother will abandon it. Maybe something happened to this fawn's mother and she hasn't been back. Should always call Game n Fish if you touch the fawn. Most of the time, they will say to put it back where you found it, but this case seems different.
Bobby Spurlock
Bobby Spurlock - 2 years ago
That was probably a newborn. Maybe just a day or two old. The fawns only defense is to lay still and not to move. They are born with literally no scent. The mother will hide it somewhere while she goes to feed herself. I don't know what part of the country this is but a predator may have driven the mother away or she could have acted as a decoy to lure one away or she could have been killed by one. In any event if possible she will come back looking for it if she hasn't rejected it for some reason. If she does come back and find it she could still reject it now if it has your scent on it. Like when you used your shirt to dry it off. I got a feeling that it was abandoned or something along those lines because it was hungry and cold and it was looking for it's mother. If it was well fed and taken care of it most likely wouldn't have come out of hiding. Nature can be a cruel bitch sometimes. The Tree Hugging Libtards have taken it upon themselves to release or reintroduce predators anywhere they can and make them protected so now about 75 to 80% of newborns are only born to feed them.

Did they put the fawn near the location they picked it up???? You need to read up on wildlife.. a fawn that young ONLY lives on mother's milk. Need also to BACK OFF to give the doe the confidence she needs to go back to her baby. Nice you got the little one out of the water but once you saw it safely back on dry land is when you needed to back way off.

It's as simple as: The mother few moments after she give birth to this very vulnerable baby was killed and eaten provably by wolfs, mountain lions or any other predator, this is way the baby deer barely could walk, on top of that the baby probably thought the guy from the kanoe was the mother , if the guy who wanted to take home the baby deer in the beginning pushed more to the other brother and take it home probably could mean the salvation for the baby deer.

Deer are born with no scent, the mother licks the urine and eats the poo from her baby so that no scent is left behind while they stay in the grass waiting for mom to come back. When you touch them you leave your scent and now they can be found by predators.

They lay down a very still during the day time, they are scent less at that age,the doe is not far away just waiting for you two clowns to leave so she can come back and feed the fawn her milk, that baby would not be eating any plants for quite a while yet.
You were the only things moving around that caught the fawns attention ,that's why it tried to swim to you in the

That little . Newborns have no scent . "Moms" leave them for short bits of time .
If time passes , the newborns will wander. You would hear the doe bleat for her fawn . Something got to the doe . Maybe the fawn saw what happened. Its reluctance to go back into the bush . And desire to follow the only other thing it knew as safety.
Whatever it was . Was still there after you left .

Dangerous if left to cold/predators overnight, if it had been abandoned or mother shot/rd. Kill etc. Would be good idea to return same spot, next day if pos. I would have had to to check, then rescue it. Wouldn't be nice to leave for nature to starve it. His friend was unsympathetic to the poor creature's plight. Not impressed with him.

After taking and handling the deer this way they have probably put a death curse on it as the mother will disown and abandon it! When you find a baby anything in the wild back away and let nature take its course to allow the mother to return and take over maternal duties. If after touching it they should back away and observe, hopefully to see the mother return. If the mother does not return then you call wildlife for instructions on how to proceed.

You left that baby fawn to die. The chances that fawn's mother found it, slim and none. Either have the heart to take it with you and raise it until you can release it back into the wild or give it to someone with a ranch and horses. That or have the heart to put it out of it's misery so that it doesn't have to die a horrible, violent death to the next predator that came along.

I'm guessing that baby deer was already separated from it's from because deers don't have to go out and hunt so they don't leave their young unless they are creating a diversion from a predator. Should've taken it to a rescue because it's probably dinner now for a bear, cougar, coyote, eagle or hawk.
Brenda Groff
Brenda Groff - 2 years ago
Its nice that he took it out of the water and took it to shore but, the best thing he should have done was when he got to shore he shouldn't have dried it with his human smelling shirt. I realize he has a big heart and was only thinking it would get cold. The reason you shouldn't handle the fawns is because their mama's will sometimes leave them because they smell the human touch on their babies. Also when he stayed down on shore and pressed his little head to ground momentarily, that is a natural response to lie close to the ground nice and still to trick predators. There mothers usually lick them so clean that it erases there scent. I hope his mama found him and kept him.
Thanks for a great video and concern. I loved it when you said "Should I call wildlife and fisheries".

Did the baby deer swim or was in REAL danger? I can’t say because we don’t see how it got on your friend’s lap.
If not you should have left it alone. All wildlife rangers etc warn against touching them because the fresh kittens take on the smell of the human and that‘s why the mother abandons the baby deer then! They can die because of this!
Just because they seem to be alone most of the time they aren‘t. Deers leave their kittens alone for quite a long time during the day and just come to feed them. But they are in touch and reach...
Austin Z
Austin Z - 2 years ago
You left the baby there when it obviously needed help. It was separated from its mother, so either she was dead, or the baby was sick. That little baby was a sitting duck for predators. Should have taken it to a wildlife rehab center so it would have had a chance.

Honestly i think either the deer separated itself or the mother abandoned it, and seeing how small and young it was, it probably won’t live long by itself. jbob3mm,The only reason that fawn would be out there by itself immediately after being born, is the mother most likely died after giving birth. I appreciate the fact that you were genuinely wanting to care for that little fellow even though you didn't know what to do. You should definitely have called the Fish and Wildlife. You need to go back and check on him. ( Being that he is a newborn he thinks you are his mamma ). Please follow up because he should have some nourishment or he will not last out there.

What affect does human scent have on a fawn: "A fawn is born scent fee... Its mother maintains the fawns lack of scent through maintenance... Human scent on a fawn attracts predators...". Well, seeing as you rubbed it down with your shirt, I think its fair to say it has a great deal of human scent.

You guys are so sweet. One of you even used your own t-shirt to wipe the fawn dry.f. It is a good idea to rub the fawn down with grass to take your smell off of them if you have touched them. http://ecosystems.psu.edu/research/projects/deer/news/2015/deer-don2019t-touch-that-baby The mothers normally do come back for their fawns to nurse them, unless something sinister has happened. If the mother does not come back after a few hours or before it get's dark, then you need to rescue the fawn and bring it to a wildlife center.

That deer was just born. They learn to walk very quickly. It’s mother must have died bc the mother’s don’t just leave there babies. Since the guys were possibly the first other living thing it saw it cling to them as their parental figure. I hope they took it to a wildlife sanctuary and stayed the baby deers life.

You did good in leaving it there, does will leave their fawns in grass and undergrowth. They sometimes wander a little. A bit better would of been to wait around for a bit, hidden several metres away. If no sign of mum after an hour then wildlife services should be contacted. A fawn wandering around and crying may have lost it's mother. But should still be watched from a distance for a while to confirm.

I get how adorable this is but you should never interfere with fawns! If you have to,DONT rub your scent all over them! If you do hold one rub the cloth in the grass or dirt then rub it on the fawn. They spend a lot of time alone for the first few weeks and they're void of any scent so predictors won't sniff them out. You can also mess up the imprinting process and can lead to abandonment! Unless they're crying or appear distressed just let them go

Fawns don’t have much of a scent at all bc the mother cleans it so much the only hour of the day it interacts with it so picking it up puts a scent that bears and other predators can smell so don’t ever pick them up none of them are abandoned the mother leaves it alone most of its life other than nursing but they are attracted to any moving object so they would walk up to a grizzly if they saw one they aren’t looking for help if you see one go the other way get away from it bc it’s chances are only around 60% survival without human interaction but plenty can happen when you mess with them such as scaring the doe away they will abandon their baby if they fear for their life. In this instance he may have been close to drowning so picking him up out of the water was maybe fine and he didn’t know any better anyway but he was definitely right to leave it there and get out of there.

The title says that it jumped into the kayak, but the guy clearly says that he doesn’t think it can walk!!!
Also baby deer are supposed to just lie down naturally, so if this one has come up to people then it has been missing its mother for long enough to drive it to do something that’s unnatural. Which makes me think that the mother is dead.

this fawn was perfectly fine and it will be fine with "their scent" on it. it came up to them and was swimming around for 2 reasons:

#1 it is a fawn. it has not yet learned what is and is not a threat. it is curious and exploring the world, and swimming is probably easier to it than walking currently and got bored.

#2 it is a deer. deer are fucking stupid animals. like stupider than cows and chickens. they are damn near brain dead.

One of the more distressing occurrences at our center this year was the number of fawns we had delivered to us. It's important for everyone to realize that deer do not abandon their young. Fawns, like many other wild animal babies, are frequently hidden and left alone for hours by their mothers while they forage for food. For the first couple of weeks, these babies generally nap while waiting for their mothers to return. They lay very still so as not to attract predators (like well-intentioned human animals), and are frequently mistaken for being in distress or abandoned. If roaming about, they may appear to be weak and stumbling, and actually be newly born. Their mothers are usually within visual range, and can always hear if their baby cries out. We had fawns brought in with umbilical cords that were not even dry, and one's ears hadn't unfolded yet.
In addition to being removed unnecessarily from their mother's care, many people try to care for these dainty creatures themselves. This year, six of these tiny victims were eventually brought to the Center in real distress, and died. Milk replacers made for domestic babies like puppies or kittens, or livestock such as calves or lambs, are completely unsuitable for a fawn's delicate system and are not even digestible. Very new babies must have colostrum -- the mother's first milk -- in order to develop the antibodies in their system that protect against disease and infection.
Let's try to educate those around us to this very real problem. The best thing you can do if you find a fawn is to:
Keep an eye on the fawn for as long as possible (or until it's mother returns), and don't go near it. If the mother thinks you are too close, she may choose not to return while you're there, so it might be best to leave for a bit and then check back.
Please do not attempt to feed it. If you do rescue a truly distressed fawn, and you can't bring it in immediately, plain water is the best thing you can offer it. It will be OK for several hours without food.
If there are real doubts as to it's vulnerability or safety (a dead doe on a nearby road for example), or if the fawn is visibly hurt or ill, please call a local wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible.

to you and anyone watching this great video. first I will strongly suggest next time anyone finds a wild baby animal be careful as the mom might and should be near by, but for the way the baby was in the water, either it fell in or was on the run from a predator. second, one of you mention calling the wild life department, if you would have taken it home, yes, but since you guys left it in the wild. third, never put your scent on a baby, the mother might reject the baby as then it life is totally in jeopardy. lets just hope it's alive. but again that's my opinion.

Good reaction to the unexpected fawn encounter. The fawn was probably spooked by a sound on land and instinctively swam toward the guy because it would not have equated humans with danger. Its mother probably left it in the brush as she went to forage nearby. When fawns lie down like that in high grass or brush they are hiding from predators until mom returns.

You rubbed your scent all over that deer when you dried it with your shirt. A predator can smell that deer now from a great distance. There's a good chance it jumped in your kayak because it was being chased by a coyote or wolf. You should've brought it home and raised it as a pet.

We’d like to be able to use your video in the programme, and I wondered if you are the owner of the footage? Could you please contact me by sending an email to c4terntravel@gmail.com
Thank you!

Sucks to say and it would be so hard to do, but if that happened to me and it appeared healthy, I would yell and scare instinct into it hoping it stays put the next time mamma deer hides her. In MN and WI, the DNR has euthanized baby deer to set an example for people to leave the wild ones alone, even when the finder had the land and resources to care for the abandoned fawn they took it away and disposed of it.

Mothers NEVER leave their babies (Deer).  That means that the baby is in trouble, and it knows it, which is why it was desperate enough to swim out to humans, which could have been a danger to it.  This deer will likely die... either starve, or become food for a predator.  It is part of nature, but at the same time, most people would want to help, and wildlife rescue could easily have hooked this baby up with an alternative mother.

Mother deer always leave their fawns alone in high brush or good cover so that the mother can go feed and get nourishment. The mother needs to stay healthy enough to feed her young. Now her fawn is going to smell like human and momma is not gonna be happy.

Alright, why doesn't this seem to alarm anyone? If you find a fawn with spots you need to remain within close enough proximity to witness its mother tending to it. Where there are deer, there are deer predators. Fawns "bad or otherwise" need their mother's milk (not leaves) every four 4 hours! Come on people, get a grip! If its mother is not seen returning, it needs to be taken to the nearest fawn rescue. Not Fish & Wildlife because they will euthanize it. Without its mother IT WILL DIE!!!

The doe was probably nearby and out foraging. She would come back looking for her fawn. The best thing to do is just keep your eye on the fawn from a safe distance and wait for dusk for when the doe comes back. If you don't see the doe for 2 nights, then you should rescue the fawn and bring him to a certified wildlife rehabilitator.

Either way, one of those animals was going to be a winner and the other a loser. My interference wouldn't of changed that. I do feel bad that I didn't help the kitten... However I think I would of felt equally bad for the fox if I did...

B. Willroth
B. Willroth - 2 years ago
So sad that he didn't know and did all wrong! IF the mother was still around somewhere the guy definitely killed that baby. Deer bond by the smell - and touching the little ones - or even rubbing them down with a shirt or towel - covers their natural smell with that of a human. Then mothers don't recognize their babies anymore or even actively avoid them because of the human smell. As a consequence they die from starving. Or because the are easy prey.
And that baby was all fine. It's in their natural behavior to hide while the mothers goes on longer explorations. This way they hide from predators.
In general stick to this one simple rule: NEVER touch baby animals in the wild. Their are most likely never lost or abandoned but simply waiting. It is very tempting to cuddle cute animals but remember that this could be a death sentence for them.

Ah, the intelligence of animal lovers in the comment section makes me laugh every time. So many contradicting "knowledge" and "expert opinions".

If these guys taken care of him he'd have killed them because the mother probably won't remember the child due to "Animal Imprinting" and "Human Smellophones" or "Law of Deermo Dynamics".
But when they just leave it for the mother to find they have doomed it due to "Potential Predators" or "Symbiotic Deerification" or some shit.
All idiots who believe knowledge gained from cartoons while claiming animals deserve to be taken more seriously as complex creatures.

Aww man. I know it's cute and you wanna pet it and all, especially when it comes up to you, but you really shouldn't pet baby deer. Does are skittish and will straight up abandon their own young if they smell of humans. If you're in a situation where you absolutely have to pick it up, the best thing to do when you release it is to rub it with dirt and leaves to get your sent off.

That being said, this is a cute video, and I appreciate your attempts to care for it!

I hate to rain on your parade but it is best to leave little animals alone and watch them from a distance unless you are certain they are either injured or abandoned. This is a very young deer, possibly just a few hours old. The mother may have been spooked by the kayakers and left the fawn alone. But since the mother is still getting used to the scent of the birthling, she may be confused by the scent when she returns. Then she could abandon the fawn because she doesn't recognize it as her baby. In the same way, this young caregiver is treating the fawn to experiences that the mother should be offering -- minus the milk -- and the fawn will imprint to a different mother-figure very rapidly. The best action would be to leave the area quickly and hope the mother returns since she is probably watching at a safe distance. These attempts at cuddling are cute, but they could cost this fawn it's life.

I just want to make it very clear, that I don't blame you guys, and that I hate to be the bringer of bad news.

Seeing how this baby deer could barely walk and that it has not lerned to fear other animals, it tells me that it's very young, mabey just a cuple of days old.

When they are this young, they are dependent upon their mother's milk to survive. The mother will not leave her child, unless she is killed.

The baby deer has probably starved to death or been eaten by a preditor by now.

The right ting to do, wuld have been to bring the baby deer to a vet. They vuld help you to nurse it to adulthud, or help you find a zoo that culd do the same.

Again, I do not blame you, you did what you thought was right and then again, this is how nature works.

Call Fish & Game, then give them the exact location of the fawn. If the fawn is, or you believe it is, in danger, take the baby to a Ranger and give him/her the exact location where the fawn was found. Mama deer usually return to their baby, if possible. Some states do not allow you to keep any wildlife, even if injured. Sometimes you can even get a monetary reward for reporting someone who is keeping wildlife illegally captive. With wild animals, you can really never know what the right thing to do is. Leaving it alone might be best, but I would qualify that with, follow your heart and best judgement. That's what I would do.
Pasliso Ming

I believe that the Wild Game and Fishery should have been contacted before you left that fawn. That fawn was in distress when you got it out the water. You really lessened it's chances of survival more distressing when you dried it off with your shirt. You put your scent on it, which made it less likely to reunite with Mom. You should not of left him. If you have to put your hands on, don't leave it.

For anyone watching this, take it from someone who actually grew up in the country:

A doe will not abandon its young because it smells like you. If that were the case, then the entirety of the hunter/game relationship would divulge into a game of tag. "Tag, I got your baby!" Nope, the willingness of the mother to hold onto the young is directly related to the number of offspring she has coupled with the amount of time and resources she has spent on producing that offspring.

The only danger is that humans tend to have strong scents (i.e. cologne, deodorant, etc.). One of the defense mechanisms that the fawn has is that it puts off as little scent as possible. When we humans pick one up, we paint it with our smell. Now, that's good and bad because the smell of a human can scare off certain predators but it could very easily attract a young and stupid cougar, for example.

Long answer short: Don't be afraid to interact with an animal for fear of its mother abandoning it -- that's dumb.

( i am not educated in bunnies at all so i dont know if the mom really was dead or if she gets good for the babies or feeds them herself idk) but tldr they felt so sad about it they took the bunnies into their green house and kitchen n sht and tried giving them milk and everything and they dropped like flies 1 by 1. it was really annoying all my friends younger sibling were BAWLING their eyes out lmao im still annoyed because i will always wonder if the mom was around or something. they were basiclly ripped from any sort of chance of survival unless they took them to a actual care facility but they didnt it was just ghetto milk in a dropper n stuff

So in other words: don't let it drown and scoot on out of there as quietly as possible, so as not to disrupt the deer hiding out in the area-just because a mother deer didn't walk out and introduce herself doesn't mean she wasn't there. They birth their fawns in places they associate with safety. I'm guessing that if the fawn lets out as little scent as possible then that changes if the fawn feels fear later on.

I can bet a girl would be happier and attracted to this man over a longer time than a muscled 6 pack monster like bodybuilder, as they show in media.. a perfect definition of a great caring male...

You should come back every year and feed him, until he gets some massive horns and then shot him. It could be valuable.

This was adorable but when you dried him off didn’t you just put your scent all over it so it’s easier for predators to find it

You did the best you could with the fawn. Did you notice you were standing on a prehistoric shell mound? If explored, it could be an archeological site.

Yep best thing to do it leave it as close to the spot you found it in. Momma might be dead never know. Hope she came back for it. I found a deer that seemingly was stashed by momma on a road. I moved it back onto the shoulder in some high grass. I am sure Momma came back for that one.

If the deer stayed alone for too long coyotes will find it (yes we have coyotes throughout the US now). I would have taken the deer to protect it from harm. There are agencies everywhere that conditionally put these animals back in the wild. Otherwise, it would be fun to house train it (laugh).
