A pool roll is one thing. Rolling after an accidental capsize in cold water can result in rushing the roll and the good technique of your pool roll goes 'out of the window'. A classic of the rushed roll is pulling down before you've swept the paddle out to the side (as shown in the video). Solution: think 'Sweep out sideways' and watch the blade as it goes out to 90 degrees. Another error is to lean back as you drive over your head with the paddle, thus preventing a good hip-flick. The solution is to keep your chin tucked down to your chest as you drive over (practice with a soft ball under your chin). Another error of rushing, is to finish the drive-over by pushing out with the rear-most hand, instead of keeping it close to your chest.. as shown at the end of the video... (practice with a soft ball under your rear arm pit). A failed roll can sometimes be saved by finishing with a scull either to the back or to the front of the boat. If the blade has finished deep and slightly behind you, turn your wrists down and raise your elbows to make a long scull forwards, the drive face of the blade facing upwards to the sky, and your body finishing forwards over the deck. To help keep a good roll-action fresh and automatic in your mind, periodically go through the action (and sequence of directing thoughts) while sitting on the floor. Never give up on getting your roll right, but be prepared to to try out variations in technique rather than staying locked in one method.

No one ever thought to try training me in a pool, or tell me to get my body where I could see the side of the kayak, or to do the sweep with the paddle. Here I thought I was an impossible learner.

It's really difficult because when you're upside down you're very disorientated. I'm not sure learning to look at your paddle or boat is a good training idea. Normal river or lake water probably isn't clear enough plus you most likely will not have goggles on. I would recommend learning to be upside-down under water while remaining calm and learning which way is which.

It's not that you always must look at the paddle or kayak while underwater, but for those first few rolls while getting oriented, having some vision to get oriented can be helpful. Once the student is familiar with the position, then that crutch of the googles can be removed. That last part is important and in line with what you are saying, I think - you must be comfortable setting up whether you can see or not.

There's some really good information in here. But the style shown is not a Sweep roll, it is a C-to-C. True, the paddle "sweeps" out to the side. Then there is a pause. Then the paddle is used as an outrigger to counter the knee roll. i.e. - force is applied to the blade face.
A Sweep Roll does not use the blade face as a force. It uses the rolling knee and the unwinding of the body while the blade slices thru the water.

Consider the common threads of these two roll styles:
   Rolling knee,
   Head near surface,
   Watching the blade (or side of boat as shown here)
   Head is the last thing out of the water

And the differences:
The rolling knee does not begin until the blade is set into 'outrigger' position.
A force is put upon the blade.

Is that reaching the body out thing not dangerous? It seems like that would expose your face for quite a while. I was taught and I still roll from a tight tuck to minimize broken faces :)

We did kayaking in Africa in the still rivers in wilderness on the way to garden route. So were fortunate to not have the kayak roll over , was exhausting for my tiny body though :)

I personally find it easier to roll with my kayak filled with water because your center of gravity is a lot lower into the water.

once i went kayaking with my friend and somehow water went inside the kayak and it would sink everytime we sat on it and it had about 2 gallons of water in it and we had to drag it back

It is quite possible to roll a kayak full with water. It's more difficult than without water, but many, many people can do it. For learning, beginners should check their kayak for water and empty it out as soon as it need it.
