Africa by Kayak - 2000km around the southern tip of Africa

In 2007, Beau Miles attempted to paddle the 4000kms from one side of Africa to the other. Starting in Mozambique and continuing along the South African coast Beau allowed 5 months to complete the voyage. With him for over half the journey was Jared Sharples of New Zealand. Together the pair experienced the magnificent coast until Jared, crippled with sickness, left the expedition. Beau paddled alone for 6 weeks, experiencing for the first time in his life, a truly nomadic, solo existence. Battling huge surf, Beau only completed 2000kms of the original plan after realising that his trip wasn't about kilometres gained but rather the quality of the experience. Shown on Outside TV USA, winner of OuterEdge Magazines most outstanding Adventure Film (2010), official selection at Montreal Adventure Film Festival (2009) & Vancouver International Mountain Film festival 2012. Produced and directed by Beau Miles Edited by Brett Campbell with Michael Crotty Music score by David Cuthbertson Dialogue editor Chris Braun Camera Beau Miles With additional footage from Jared Sharples, Brett Campbell, Alistair Young, Richard Moran, Justin Bosch, Paul Hughes, Jamie Magyar.

Another great video. I was just wondering what you found more challenging, the running in Australia or the kayaking around Africa?
Beau Miles
Beau Miles - 3 years ago
G'day Martin, I can't really clear that one up for you...both really different. But beyond that being a cop-out answer, the run was the most physical thing I've ever thrown myself at, and Africa the longest. Logistically, both challenging, but Africa hands down had more 'moments'- where you think, 'bloody hell, what do I do?'

This movie deserves so much more credit... I'm not talking about just the number of views, people should learn from this inspirational story. Big ups!

PS how did your kayak manage not to sink with your gigantic balls of steel in it?

Cheers Jankorl. Funny...and untrue, they are a regular set of testicles.

It is a pull-apart Australis Iguana- a fantastic expedition boat. Not fast, but hauls a heap of gear, super stable, and bombproof for expeditionary life. Check them out here http://www.canoes.com.au/sea-kayaks/

The kayak is an 'Iguana', a three piece pull apart kayak by Australis canoes and kayaks, an Australian company based in Wollongong near Sydney. The most comfortable, reliable and bomb proof kayak I've ever paddled. Not all that fast, but not all that slow either. As we say in Aus, it's 'a bloody ripper, mate'.

you can really see how far the equipment has come in 10 years. From the DIY pipe camera to tiny go pros. Easier... but not quite the same challenge

Good idea. Since this is my first time on a kayak adventure both alone and in a kayak, I'm happy to take any advice. Gifts and fishing rod will be brought along for the journey :) Just finished watching your 5 episodes from the bass strait tour. Thanks for contributing so much!

Good one Rune,
A quirky piece of advice is take 20% more stuff than you need, and give it away as you go...it feels like the most liberating thing in the world to downsize what it already a stripped back version of simple, good life. Remember the fishing rod...Enjoy.

Lots to consider Adam, but I'm the last person in the world to say all-too-hard. Chalk up a lot of days, shake down your gear, get good land maps (OS/topo) as well as charts, and go for it. All the best

Hi Mr Lures,
That was the hardest part of the first 1000k. Few coastal towns and the dry season....I can barely remember it raining. I walked 5k one day to get water and ended up drinking beer instead.
