I got mine in 2015, my first kayak. It's still my only kayak but after this year I will likely be looking to upgrade to a pedal-kayak. This has been an excellent starter boat but this model is already out of production so you're only going to find one like the kayak in the video for sale used. Which is fine, it's a sturdy craft and I think Chad made a good choice in presenting this boat as the best buy in its class.

Thanks for making this. Looking for my first yak, and I'm definitely in that price range. Also looking at the Lifetime Tamarack Angler--only $250.

Leonardo Herrera - 5 years ago
Chad Hoover i’ll add to his comment. The hauls are pretty much the same. The Tamarack comes with an in between the legs hatch. It’s seating area is more ergonomic. It comes with a rod holder on the right side which is much easier access than the center one on this one. It comes with every accessory this one has except for the extra pad eyes and anchor trolley. I added those for under $15 though. It comes with a paddle, and even though it’s cheap at $250 for the kayak you can afford a better one. Also, not everybody will want the anchor trolley on the left side, so you have that freedom to choose. It’s rugged, and customizable. The only complaint I have is that there are two scupper holes right behind the seat.

I have a 12 foot field and stream eagle run I won in a sales contest while woring at dick's sporting goods. I have two fishing rod holders. It is a sit-in cam in color. I have fished in it for largemouth bass for the past eight years. I put a fish finder on it. It tracks very well and is considered a fast kayak. Even though it is fast with little effort, it does not have some features I believe are essentail for comfort and fishing. In effect, I reccomend a sit on with the adjustable sit. The seat is important since you need comfort and adjustments for your back. Also, a fiberglass Paden saves you alot of energy throughout the day.

Has anyone put stabilizers/outriggers on there Perception Pescador? What ones specifically? My 8.0 doesn’t appear to have a level surface behind the seat to mount the stabilizers too.

I have the pescador 14 footer and love it. I'm 6"4, 215 and can stand in it. If I had an elevated seat itd be easier to stand and sit tho but I love it.

I would like to stand while fishing but want to know what your opinion for a first timer that's trying to keep the price down just in case Kayaking isn't for me. Also, trying to transport it inside my pickup bed so the length I'd like to keep around 10.5'

If you wait, dicks always has a yak sale every year. I want to say the last week of may or something like that, anyways. You can get the talon 12 (12ft 6in) for under $500 and then if u dont have their credit card, apply and or purchase it with the credit card for an additional 10% off on top of the sale price. Got mine for $384 total out the door. I cant remember exactly the promotion they were running, but i had to buy another $20 of stuff to get the 6 month same as cash no interest deal on the card. Totally worth it. Great yak! The seat and the trolling holder were garbage, but still.

Has anyone familiar with the Perception pescador had any experience with the Magellan Origin from Academy Sports? I swear they look like the exact same mold and have the same feel except the Pescador has flush mount rod holders and the Magellan has the rod holders molded in. I wonder what other generic and store brands Perception makes.

I'm currently looking at the Perception hook angler. I like the idea of sitting inside and not getting too wet. Any feedback of this would be a good entry level fishing kayak as well?
Ninebears

I would say yes. My first kayak was the Heritage Feather Lite Angler sit in. Never had a problem with it in the water. I used it in the St. John's River here in Jacksonville, FL. The Perception model is a lot better than my old Heritage and has a way better setup for fishing. Take it out a few times, get used to it and learn how it maneuvers - then set it up for fishing.

Hey Rylan: I've been enjoying my sit-on-top Tarpon 100 for 8 years. Love fishing from it. Sponge golf balls are perfect for keeping water from burping up through any scupper holes. And the kayak bobs like a cork so I DO NOT get wet.

Good Video! I have the Perception Striker 11.5 500lb. weight rating. I bought it 4 years ago and it was my first and only kayak so far. It was $500.00 from Dick's Sporting Goods and it would have to be my choice in best kayak for the money. I have no problem standing up in it, comes with 4 flush rod holders behind the seat, and it can hold a ton of stuff.

I think the most important thing is to not drag your kayak.

Great videos! I live on the cheaper side of fishing, as well as a bunch of other people, so I appreciate you giving us these types of videos! This is a prime example that you don't need to be made of money to enjoy fishing and get out on the water! Tight Lines Chad!

Chad, good video for a great subject! Remember when we were growing up and the fishing was so simple? It was great! I try to teach people that they don't have to spend $thousands$ to be kayak anglers... There are many great kayaks (premium brands) for less than $800. Your informative, instructional videos are an asset to our sport. Thank you!

For those of us that prefer sit-IN yaks, I highly recommend the Old Town Vapor 10 Angler. Had mine for over 3 years now and it has held up very well. And I use it A LOT (25-30 hours/3-4 excursions a week during the summer months) and am not gentle with it. I drag it, drop it, throw it, etc. No dents or breaks. Stable, tracks well, footpegs are solid and have a wide range, and light enough for a scrawny guy like me to carry it without getting hurt.
regression

As for paddle drip, if you get a paddle with 90-degree notches cut on the bottom inside of the blade, the water will hit that edge and drop straight down, instead of running towards your hands. Check them out, they're great.
Terry McCormick
Terry McCormick - 6 years ago
I've fished from an OT Vapor Angler 10 a lot. As you said, it is super stable and is also pretty good at keeping things dry (minus a little paddle drip). That's an important advantage in colder wx or cold water. I got my 10 before I ended up with 3 hip replacements. Being in my 70s and over 200lbs, it got harder and harder to get in and out of a cockpit. I would joke that I would "fall in and crawl out". Actually, it wasn't really a joke. Embarrassing.
I gave the 10 to my daughter and her hubby and am now searching for a SOT. Thanks Chad for pointing out the pluses and minuses on the Pescador!

Pescador is a great entry level kayak. Tracks and paddles well.
My first kayak was a Lifetime Manta 2.5 tandem (also sold as the Lifetime Sport Fisher)--doesn't track or paddle very well but I found it for under $300 when Sports Authority was closing them out. Still love it and use it from time to time. Great kayak to experiment with and modify to find your fishing style (what you want and don't want in a nicer kayak)

I have the Tarpon 120 , looks real similar . Great boat , we even launch crab boxes in the bay , if it gets too rough just hang your feet over the sides , real stable .

Craig Mize the pescador is just the older molds WS passed down, along with a pretty plain layout. I sold my 120 recently to help fund a bigger boat for more offshore fishing.

Solid boat and a solid price. Love your point about disposable kayaks, more people need to hear that.

Chad,

Good info, I'm not sure of the best #FishingKayak under $500.00 but from your breakdown I would say this one will have to rank up their. I will speak on things to consider when purchasing your first kayak is the ease of getting on water will keep you hooked on #KayakFishing. Choose one that you can transport easily. store easily and handle many different #KayakFishing situations, these three things will keep beginer #KayakAnglers on the water.

Nice this was my first kayak. I still have it cause its still just a good yak to keep for a buddy yak. Still love that yak. Light weight and paddles great.

Good review Chad. I always liked the Tarpon kayaks. Perception didn't change much at all as far as design, just added some features. These are great starter fishing kayaks and has good all around ratings. The 10 footers don't track as well as the 12, but they are stable and comfortable enough for most entry level guys and gals. Good tips about the dry bag, we all have to learn that lesson at some time.
I wish the seat was a bit more padded on the bottom, but all-in-all, these are really great boats for the price.

Good video! Lots of helpful advice. I like what I heard you say one time though " buy your second kayak first". And I know alot of people can't afford to do that but it really hit home for me and was the best choice for me in the end.

Yep, I have a standard, non-angler Pescador 10 and added my own rod holders. My first yak for fishing after being a canoe guy for a long time. I like it a lot, especially for the price I got it for. Next mod will be an anchor trolley. :)

Other than gear specifically rated for the salt, it's all about getting that salt water off the gear after using it.

I bought a Pescador 10 for river/creek fishing when I upgraded to the Radar 135. I think the Pescador is a great small kayak to start with. I chose the Pescador over the Ascend 10T cause I valued it's lighter weight and more dry storage over standability and a nicer seat. The Ascend is another one to look at for a price of $550.

another really nice starter kayak for around that price is the Pelican Catch 110 NXT that comes out soon I have the 120 got it for just $549 with a 25% off at Dunham's Sporting. it's been a really nice ride for the first time Yak and I can stand up for a little bit to stretch and readjust. Nice video though I just want to say that after buying a less expensive kayak I wish I would have saved up and gotten a kayak with the most stability and fish ability, but if you don't have the money for that like you said there's some decent starters out there. God bless and keep casting brother.

I ended up with a Future Beach Voyager 124si angler for 180. A local sporting goods store had been running specials on them for a while. I had wanted something more around 500 however family issues arose and money had to be diverted to that. However I'm actually pretty surprised and pleased thus far as a 6' 185lb guy. When sales come this winter I'll cop a better kayak and still have this one around to get both my brother and me out on the lake together.
The Pescador was definitely on the list, along with some of the Ascend models (bps is super close to me).

I have a slightly older perception access 11.5. Picked it up used for $275 WHICH was really cheap. It hasn't even been on the water. It's a very comfortable, stable (not enough to stand) boat. It tracks exceptionally well and is pretty fast. I love it. But I would live to have the larger Pescador. It may be my next boat

I usually stay far away from black Friday sales, but it is in around the corner. Academy's black Friday sale allowed me to get my first kayak for $400 regularly $600 (12ft emotion angler) for the person on a budget itching to Kayak fish you may want to watch big box store ads.

I wish I had had a $500 budget to get started. I bought a kayak that was underrated for my weight. I had to plug the scupper holes. I only did the front ones. I need to do the back too, because all my gear gets wet. I've tipped a couple times, too. It's one thing to get off the bank, but it's another to do it by taking a swim in a cold lake...

Love the break down of the boat. I am shopping for two kayaks for my wife and I. I think this one will probably work for her, but I am looking for something to be able to stand up in. The other problem....I'm 6'2" and about 375 right now. Any recommendations on which style or brand I should be looking at?

I am new to kayak fishing and rushed into my first kayak. I got a sit in type. Looking back, I wish I would have been patient and saved more for a sit on with the ability to stand. I am still able to fish and enjoy the water though. That is the most important part. Will upgrade at a later date!
