Go for it, you'll love it. Be sure to look for local clubs to get you started right, it's a dangerous sport to just "jump into", and a bad first experience could scare you off the river.

Yes and no. I wouldn't suggest learning to ferry in a 12 foot kayak, try a good river runner between 7 and 9 feet long. Boat angle becomes FAR more crucial with longer boats because course correction is MUCH more difficult. However, longer boats also have greater hull speed and therefore can maintain their forward momentum against current better than small 'stubby' boats.

Get a book or video on kayaking and learn the terms first. If you don't know some of the key terms such as angle, rails, or the basic paddling strokes, then a short little video like this might not be very helpful without further research. Check out my video about teaching a beginner to kayak and see if it helps.

Not a bad video, so ntilley88 you're just being curmudgeonly. The problem with this video, in my opinion, is the same with many 'beginner' videos: it's so short, it is lacking in details for beginners. It also picked a pretty unfortunate location since the water is so fast and the far bank so distant, it makes it hard to demonstrate an ideal ferry. Keep the bow about 25 to 30º from "vertical" (directly upstream". Proper paddling technique is crucial. More detail is needed there.

This is terrible instruction and demonstration. Ferry gliding is the act of going from one side of the river to the other WITHOUT being pushed down stream. Also she should be aiming for the top of the eddy (furthest point upstream in the eddy) All aspiring kayakers dont listen to anything ExpertVillage say. Go out and find a decent kayaking instructor.
