Hi, I am currently working on the development of a new television series for Discovery. We would be interested in including an extract of the above video in our programme and I wonder if you can tell me whether this might be possible? Check your inbox for details, thanks!

For anyone that hasn't seen this it's amazing. The best part is observing all of the fish going to and fro at various depths. Every now and then you see a big one and it looks like a spaceship or something! I see this all the time in the summer on our boat where I live, also swimming in it is amazing. Great stuff.

unfortunately no, there is no way to predict when or if it will happen. it's just all of the sudden visible as red tide/water during the day, and then you can expect to see it that night

It's bioluminescent flagellates that come in every year for a short 2 week period. This was the strongest effect we have seen of it for a long time, usually isn't this vibrant - was definitely cool to see!

aha this reminds me of when i was 10, if i couldnt sleep & it was like 3 am i'd sneak out and splash my feet in the pool, knock on my friends windows to scare them (all the kids at my school lived in my neighborhood), etc. one time i found a dog out, i fed it some food and let it sleep in the garage until the next morning when i pretended to "find" it and took it to the animal shelter. i think she was adopted. :)

Honestly, just used the Canon camera strap, wrapped it around my neck twice and tried to stick my chest out while paddling
Tim King
Tim King - 12 years ago
I think the mk ii was 6400 and then h1 h2, this was shot at h2. I just got the mk iii last week and WOW! Can't wait to re-make this in Puerto Rico's bioluminescent bay & take it out in Alaska for some northern lights action. Not sure I'll ever get a chance like I had in Sweden though.

REV0Kadavur
REV0Kadavur - 12 years ago
@timkingphoto i was looking into costly specialized cameras, but if the 5D can do it, then thats all I need.. thats awesome.. and of course now im wanting the mark III..... how high does the iso go?
REV0Kadavur
REV0Kadavur - 12 years ago
@timkingphoto Ah, it would figure... I have been itchin' to own one of those myself, I just cant afford the investment yet... but its good to know it handles low light so well, and even though its high iso, the resolution is still good.. much better than alot of whats out there..
REV0Kadavur
REV0Kadavur - 12 years ago
@timkingphoto yeah, ill check it out...

Tim King - 12 years ago
@REV0Kadavur I'm using the 5D mk ii with a 1.4 lens at h1 iso. Same settings I used a week ago to capture the northern lights (also on my channel, check it out!)
REV0Kadavur
REV0Kadavur - 12 years ago
@jorgecornet This can be seen in different parts of the world, different times of the year... it can be seen in austraila, PR, the gulf coast, Pacific coast.... I have heard they have even been seen in shades of violet and red.. I have seen blue and green bioluminescence... I think it has alot to do with the type of bloom.
REV0Kadavur
REV0Kadavur - 12 years ago
What kind of camera did you use here???!?!?!? looks like you even managed to get the fish darting off in the water out in front of you, WITHOUT being washed out by the light pollution... completely awesome.. I have yet to figure out how to catch the sharks and rays on film, swimming by like water spirits...
REV0Kadavur
REV0Kadavur - 12 years ago
August 2011 was one of the brightest blooms in over a decade along the california coast, August 28th in particular. During the day, it looked like clean, clear blue ocean... at night it was glowing greenish blue as far as you could see, north, south & west... this can be seen along certain coastal areas, bays & even rivers on incoming tides, where there is little light pollution, or a dense enough bloom to be seen easily. The blooms on average start in July & can last all the way into December.
REV0Kadavur
REV0Kadavur - 12 years ago
To debunk the myth here.. these organisms emit light from their bodies, the light does not actually represent the toxins associated with red tides, thought its an indicator of bloom density. These organisms are not only present where the red tide is visibly red, but they are also present where the water is seemingly clear and free of that awful red slick.. Though they are associated & apart of the red tide, Red Tides are not always red & Blooms of Dinoflagellates are also not always dangerous.

Tim King
Tim King - 12 years ago
@mercanaries3 It's caused by organisms called dinoflagellate made up mostly of plankton which bloom by the billions and stain the surf red. they're bioluminescent so they glow blue when disturbed
