I studied the Netsilik people through an anthropological perspective, and feel it's safe to assume that the people in the film are Netsilik actors enlisted by the National Film Board of Canada for this production. Their background is truly a story of human hardiness honed through hundreds, and even thousands of years of practising the skills needed for survival in one of harshest environments on Earth. I also hand build kayaks in the Eastern Arctic design, but in cedar strip, epoxy, and fibreglasss and can appreciate the skill of the traditional craft.

you can not act this kind of knowledge, since it takes many years of doing and experience to achieve the skill, with guidance..

Man, I just want to fly up there with some hammers and plumbobs and hacksaws and all manner of proper tools to give them and tell them that fish tastes a lot better when you cook it.

thats how every tribe, race or people got ensnared in the SYSTEM. Within 1-2 generations people can go from being totally self reliant to not knowing their arse from their elbow. Its really quite upsetting actually.

But you did, Paul! This film is 50 years old! They now live in the comfort and superiority of the no superstition you believe in. And maybe they have taken off that stupid smile they had in doing so amusing things at their ridiculously slow paces, so little rentable!

It does have the disadvantage though, that as soon as you get hooked to western tools and forget the old way of doing things, then you will become dependant on our way of life. That way a lot of knowledge and tradition can be lost quite quickly and it's very likely, that they will become less and less self reliant. Sooner or later they will then be forced to take a job and become like us and then there will be no way back for them.

You implied that you wanted to change their lifestyle by teaching them to cook the fish. Il take that as a joke, but still. It hinted an attitude.

Its true, nature is raw. And healthcare is good, for the one who can afford it. That is what we should have offered on “first contact”. Not to tell them that they're way of life is wrong, and that they're beliefs are wrong. They should have had the chance to make that decision themselves. Science is good. It helps us to understand our surroundings, how it works. But modern society is not “all harmony with nature and stories around the campfire” either. We are facing a lot of problems, which we happily ignore.
Paul TheSkeptic

+TeamDiscus Well, I never said that I wanted to fly up their with money and jobs and show them how to do that then buy a house with all the major modern appliances so they could be like Ozzie and Harriet. I would give them things that they'd, in all likelihood, already be familiar with and know how to use. And if not it's no big trick.

Also, there's a dark side to living such an isolated existence. They can die of easily preventable diseases or live with the pain of parasites. It's not all harmony with nature and stories around the campfire. The advantages of modernity are vast. Modern medicine alone gives us many more years. Modern science wakes us up from living with constant superstition.

It sure would be handy, and comfortabel. What I mean is that “we” in “modern society” often view indigenous people as primitive and that they're life is a struggle and that “we” should help dem. And sure some modern tools would be usefull. But the fact is that these people are perfectly adapted to their environment, they use local materials, they hunt and fish for the amount of food they need (not more). They live in balance with their surroundings. Unlike us in modern society. What I mean is that, in reality, they do a better job at living on this earth than “we” do. They can make a masterpiece using rocks, why should they depend on hammers?
Paul TheSkeptic

+TeamDiscus Why? You like building things with rocks instead of hammers?
