nice little boat I have one... did all the mods..outriggers,milk crate new rod holders, anchor trolly, padded not an elevated seat, but is just to small ..now I only weigh 150 lbs. but even with the outriggers I find it to unstable to really stand up and cast. I need a bigger wider boat at least 12 footer... I know it's gonna cost more money but after experiencing this little boat it's gotta happen if you like to fish a lot.you get what you pay for in the Kayak world..that's for sure. so this boat is going to my wife and I'm getting an upgrade...

The pieces i used are not going to be with plumbing. You should be able to find these near the electrical section.

I see a lot of people making these stability rigs, where do you hold your rods with those in there? Can you paddle like normal with them sticking out??
Mr. Shaky head
Mr. Shaky head - 5 years ago
i used one rod during this normally and it was sitting between my legs or in my lap unfortunately. Paddling wasnt an issue.

just installed two flush mount inset rod holder like that and I also need outriggers to stand. are the rod holders strong enough to support the outriggers?

Maybe use one of those flat rubber bungees and two eye bolts. Extend the bungee under the boat and pull tight from one bolt to the other. That how I am going to do it.

1 1/4 PVC pipe will fit nice if you have a belt sander. Make a very slight taper. I sanded off about a 1/6" or less and it pushed right in. After making both pieces, each about 10" long, I noticed they sit at a funny angle. I don't think there are any PVC fittings that will square things up. So....I'm going to try heating them. That may work. I see people heating PVC and they always burn it. It started out changing color to yellow. It doesn't take that much heat to make it soft.
Norman Stephan
Norman Stephan - 5 years ago
If you heat the middle and slightly pull apart once it softens, it will contract the middle. Once cooled, just cut the middle and you have 2 tapered ends.
Mr. Shaky head

gotta be careful with the heat

Put a couple of T's in the middle for rod holders. If your straight piece in the middle doesn't line up....heat and bend .

You could connect the outrigger...the place behind your back.....right straight across with some PVC T's for rod holders. If not perfectly straight across....heat and bend.

I have one of these kayaks. I admit it feels tippy but I have never really capsized it and I weigh over 200 myself.

One thing I do recommend is adding a fixed rudder or siege.

I bought one of these :
https://www.ebay.com/itm/132140986567

and made a mount from plastic trim board from Home Depot.
I made it retractable. Works great!!

It turned out really well actually. Before i glued everything down, i went out and made some small adjustments and marked where i wanted everything. glued it together and it worked great. I took the kayak down some kind of rough water and they held up. i was able to fish comfortably and had no more tipping issues. i didnt try to stand up in it though. too scared lol.

I love this. I'm paralyzed from the chest down and I put some custom out riggers almost just like this. Same pipes, same design with the buoys. Mine was spread out 3 foot on each side. I didn't know I could have them closer. I was afraid I would tip over too easy haha. I'm gonna bring my buoys closer now. Thanks for the idea. It's brilliant.

If you have a SOT (Sit On Top) kayak your center of gravity is higher than a Sit inside yak. It has nothing to do with your size. I installed outriggers on my SOT.

how is it to paddle around, is there much drag?
Mr. Shaky head
Mr. Shaky head - 7 years ago
There is definitely more drag so you'll go slower unfortunately. but for me im just going to be using it to float around and scope out local ponds. i made a small anchor by tying a 5lb weight to some rope so i dont drift.

What country are you from? Whatever language you are trying to speak barely resembles English. I believe you should've paid a little more attention in English class because with a vocabulary like you have, you aren't going to command much respect in the real world.

I have a 16 foot 2 man Kayak with a sail. The sail came with lee boards. Without the outriggers I would have swamped immediately. I used two 8 foot 4 inch PCV pipes at a distance of 4 feet parallel to the center of the boat. I used two 8 foot two by fours to secure the outriggers to the upper deck of the Kayak.

I tested this design on Paradox lake in the Adirondack Park. With full sail and jib deployed, the boat runs smoking fast.
