Great video! Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I have no idea what to get into. I am about 6'1" tall and currently 240lbs, but that goes up to 260lbs at times.

I thought I wanted a sit-in kayak because it just "looks like what a kayak is supposed to be." But...I honestly would rather be comfortable for my size, and the fact that I am clumsy as hell is a big deal. Last thing we need is a fat guy upside down in a sit-in kayak I think! So your video really showed some great takes on both options!

When I look at things though, the one you pull out of the truck at 4:55 in the video looks like what I had in my head as something I would like. It looks deep enough for my size and weight, however it is sit-in, right?

I DO think the longer the better because of my height. Is that the wrong way to look at it? I want to be comfortable on full-day outings.

I expect to be on calmer water and paddling the lake until I get used to it and get in better shape.

I do not mind getting wet at all, in fact that might be better! I do also think a sit-on kayak would be less hassle in expelling water and might be great if I want to hop off and swim.

Again, thanks for sharing.

If you have the name or info on that kayak at 4:55, I would like to look that one up.

Thanks!

I want a decent, but stable speed kayak, that is easily maneuverable and can withstand impact from trees and rocks. Any recommendations?

if you want durability tho. I still like 3 layer boats. Much more hardy, but not alot of speed type setups that I have seen. mostly rec.

I have a Hobie but I started on a caster and it was great all conditions except strong wind I recommend for a grown man to have at least 12.5 ft long and 28-32 inches wide

What type you get depends on what you want to do. Want to fish primarily and not paddle more than a mile or 2? You want a sit on top kayak with rigging for fishing since those are wide and stable. You want to go distance and want speed and the ability to take on tides currents and waves in open water, get a sit inside. If you want to surf primarily any river play boat is an excellent place to start. You can always find an old one in the classifieds for a few hundred. Just realize all these boats are all great for their specific purposes. Pick based on your purpose!

goddamn it. I've Googled all morning and surfed youtube. I have found nothing about length/height. I'm 6'2", will I fit in a 10ft? shouldn't there be some sort of guideline? a measurement from seat to footpeg? NOPE. nothing. please, I have a guy offering me a kayak, but I do want to make a mistake. any input would be appreciated. thank you.

zech - The big difference for recreational kayaks when it comes to 10' vs 12' is their ability to hold weight. A general rule of thumb is every 2ft length extra gained, you gain another 75-100lbs of capacity.

I myself am 5' 11" 250 lbs and I have a 10 foot old town loon. It's plenty big enough for me. But I do sometimes wish I went with something slightly larger, a 12 foot would be plenty big enough for you

Why not make them from aluminum? I think that's what I would want.

and it still corrodes. Its hard but it does happen. plus, every time you hit anything you have a dent.

Expensive, hard to manufacture those tight radius curves, hard to get it water tight, aluminum gets hot on sunny days and will burn you, weighs more than polyethylene, etc.

+EasyFlare , you might be right. I have an aluminum Kline Quantum Bicycle, yet its so light . I don't know how it has held up under me all these years weighing 250 lbs.

I want an inflatable kayak strictly for recreational purpose.
I can just walk up to the beach or on a bicycle and launch it right from there.
It would be awesome to travel along the coast and see the shore from another perspective and having lunch on the water.

Sure, you're faster in a touring kayak (like the one I have) but you also sacrifice maneuverability
