You're all ridiculous, and this is a ridiculous argument. The guy teaching this video is shooting on the Ottawa River. People VERY seldomly paddle the Ottawa without a helmet, and generally those who do receive heckling from other paddlers. I'm about 95% certain his helmet is with the cameraman, or on shore 20 feet away. Needless to say, there's nothing about paddling flat water without a helmet that sets a bad example. That would be like wearing your helmet while walking.

I wear my helmet during flatwater practice cause it's a great place to attach my nose plugs :D

@TheHonkingArmadillo really? I've never heard this sort of advice from any BCU coach. Besides, you can't really tell if that's a lake or just a calm section of a river. Also, when paddling in groups there is always the chance of a paddle striking someone's head.

@TheHonkingArmadillo As for surfing and rowing/olympic racing (really actually rowing), I dont know anything about how their organistions are run and to be honest could care less. Thats trying to deflect from the point Im making. What "professional organistions" do you know run intro course without giving paddlers helmets? Thats incredibly unprofessional and sets a terrible example. As for necessary???? I suppose next you'll tell me if they are stronger swimmers they dont need PDFs?

@TheHonkingArmadillo Ok, where are you from? I hope you arent an instructor. There are standards set down by most European paddling assoc. that paddlers never get on the water without a helmet. In fact instructors can loose their membership of my national organisation (Irish CU) if they are found to be so irresponsible. You are missing the point. When you get into a car do you not put on a seatbelt for safety even though nothing might happen? Same mentality for helmets and kayaking.

@TheHonkingArmadillo Are you serious? 1: Its unprofessional to be teaching without a helmet as it sets a bad example for the students. 2: Just because its flat doesnt mean that there is nothing lying inches under the water. 3: What about newbies bumping into each other and paddles being flailed around as they try new strokes? Very unprofessional as its promoting paddling without helmets as ok. If thats his personal opinon fine, but dont put others at risk by setting a bad example.
