Ascend made kayaks before Bass Pro bought them. Bass pro buys companies to maximize profits, because most of what they sell is actually just "rented space" to big brands. buy the company, though, and you can put their products in your stores for no extra cost but manufacturing.
when they buy boat companies, take legend as an example, they don't exactly control everything. They make the super high up decisions, such as marketing and buying, but its not like they change the soul of the product.

I’d say put a trolling motor on it. 30lb thrust would be plenty, I have a 45lb for my canoe and it gets me moving.

My advice with the lights is use ANYTHING BUT red and green, what red and green means is that you are a power boat, and if your white light is on it means powerboat at anchor, so use a white light or NOT red and green, because if a boater is drunk, or just stupid they will think you are a power boater and that you will be able to get out of their way

As an avid kayaker, I would recommend putting the transceiver through one of the scupper holes rather than the mount. The wound could get in the way. Btw the black part is for standing in the yak. A little bit of elastic on the side and a hook of some sorts works great as a paddle mount.

If you're going to be out at night you're gonna want nav lights. You could use each led strip on a side of the yak and have one set up red and one green. There's some battery boxes for kayaks on Amazon that would keep everything water tight. Plastic ammo cans work well too, they just require some modifications to keep them water tight. These can be drilled, but I would use the special rivets that keep everything water tight.

Great video, I purchased the same kayak oh it's my first and finally I'm getting better with fishing and most important learning not to be afraid of tipping over. Bass Pro is closed to 2hrs from me and my first time out I flipped twice and lost 3 scupper plugs. I ordered more from Bass Pro and they were the wrong size so I ordered some from Field and Stream. Dude if you have some you can spare please send me some. As always great videos and keep them coming. Last where can I find your fishing rod collection near PA? Thanks again.

Jon quick suggestion, when your working on the Yak in the garage get yourself a couple of cheap saw horse and elevate the Yak to waist level, it will make working on it a lot easier than sitting on the garage floor with pieces and parts all over the place. Jon, get yourself the icefishing kit for your Lowrance. Hear me out here. The kit comes with a bag that stores the whole thing for icefishing and comes with a battery and ice tranducer. I keep everything in the bag when not in the yak (except my regular transducer which is permanently mounted to my yak). I use a ram mount to mount the unit to gear track on my yak and put the bag with the battery still in it in my front hatch with the wires coming out of the bag to power the unit. Then I can easily transport it, it takes very little time to hook it up and the battery is secure in the bag (along with everything I need for when the water turns to ice and I go icefishing). Win win. (You do plan on returning to the midwest for some icefishing, right?)

You could go with a much smaller battery for your depth finder and led lights. I use a 12 volt 7.5 amp hour battery and can leave the depthfinder on 24/7 for a three day kayak trip. They only cost about $30 and much lighter than the one you have.

For the LED lights just use automotive double sided tape it's made by 3M it's red there are many sizes (width) and it's waterproof of course because you have to put it under car trim, hope you see this and hope it helps! Ps get an anchor so you don't drift in the wind if your on a lake or big pond, trolling motor on the back is nice but not a necessity, and I'm sure you could find someone or a website that makes decals or even stencils so you can put "rigged" on the side of your boat. Great video !!

One thing I would suggest is a YakAttack BlackPak . It's for your tackle but it has a lid. It can be strapped down but if you where to flip the kayak it would keep everything inside. It also have rode holders on it as well. Just thought I'd leave the suggestion because I know from experience.

instead of using a milk crate, use a cooler of some type, i can carry my tackle, dry bag, everything in there and if my kayak tips over, it wont dump my gear. also get an 8ft, 1/2-3/4'' fiberglass rod (tree Stake) from amazon and use it as a stick it pin, and make an anchor trolley for deeper water. I have an Ascend FST128, and love it!

For a heads up, a sealed lead acid battery works a little better so you don't have to remove it or worry about it tipping over. The first hole you drill is always nerve racking but definitely well worth it!

You could use a deeper. They sell a mounting game arm that fits those rails too. That way you don't need the battery right next to it either, and save space without needing the screen unit, just need a mount for your phone or a dedicated tablet.

Easiest way to mount those LEDs is going to be either with plumbing pipe straps (clear or metallic available) or by using structural adhesive tape. The straps would be easier than the tape in terms of long-term use and minimizing movement, but would reuquire 8D size nail holes in the gunwales.

I would suggest either putting the less on the inside edge or out side edge of the gunnel so you are not hitting it with the paddle. Also if they are point straight up at you they are very bright. I put a very similar kit on my pontoon works very well to see where you are walking when night fishing.

JonB there is a 12v water proof battery pack ( http://a.co/900lTVw ) that is made for trail cameras. It has a built in wall charger!!! You'll have to cut off the trail camera plug and replace it with a positive negative plug you can pick up at any auto part store. Then make a fuse box. It's easy. Find a small plano box. Drill a input hole run your main wire into the box. From there you you can wire multiple fuses. One fuse for your fish finder, lights, and anything else. then drill some out holes. Seal the holes with silicon. I also drilled a switch into my fuse box. This switch controlled my navigation lights. The last step is VELCRO. Put velcro at the bottom of the battery pack, and the fuse box. The great thing about the velcro is it secures your battery without having to drill into anything. I forgot to mention the battery pack has a handle on it which makes it easy to carry around.

If you already have the 12v marine battery, then LEDs are a simple attachment to that. Especially with the on/off remote you have in the video. Maybe think about a small solar panel system (if you have room) to keep the battery charged. Also, they have battery boxes for those batteries so that it protects it from the elements that are like $20.

dont put those LEDs on the rail of the yak, resting your paddle on it will wear it out, as well as the sticky shit they use on those strips is absolute garbage it will fall off within a week. put the strips somewhere out of the way and not around water. the only "water proof'ness" on those lights is the rubber coating over each light but not the glue side.

You can epoxy the transducer to the inside of the hull by way of the black circular deck plate. Of course this means water temp isn't as accurate and you would have to drill a hole for the transducer wires to the unit. At least you wouldn't have to attach and detach that goofy mount all the time.

The ram mount system has a suction cup, not sure if the kayak has smooth enough finish but they work great in my fiber glass boat for tools mounting and no holes. I can adjust where its located anytime depending if I fish bow or stern. Might be a good solution for transducer or for fish finder so that you can position it where you want and take it off for flipping upside down when you strap to the highlander. Keep fishing...Never Stop!

Hey Jon B. Ummm i have a lot of suggestions for your setups. I have setup my own and also sold Kayaks for many year also would go fishing in the ocean a lot in the past. You have to have a dry box for the battery with a quick disconnect for the wires. You need a paddle leash for you paddle also, that leash is the most important, you nvr want to up a creek without a paddle. Also you need to think about if you tip over what will happen to all your gear. I use paddle leashes as rod leashes also.... cheeper that way. Everything needs to be strapped to something that is not going to fall off. Even you tackle bag. Tipping over with all your gear is the biggest issue when using a kayak.

Use stainless nuts and bolts if you can reach inside the yak and can drill holes. Otherwise, use Trigrip rivets...they work the best when attaching to areas where you otherwise can’t reach. Get a waterproof battery box for the battery. You can hide the battery inside the body of the yak in a water proof box and feed wires up using a wire gromet.

Get your self some rod and a paddle leashes. Or cut a pool noodle in like 6 inch pieces and wrap them around your rod in case if you dump. Since you have room on the sides of your seats I'd just Kay the rods in there. If you put them in the rod holders behind and you do any overhand casting you'll probably snag your line in the rods. Waterproof battery box and store that in the milk crate for the depth finder and the lights. One battery should be good. The LEDS draw like no power what so ever. Plus you'll barely use them Awesome yak

I was hesitant to drill into my kayak at first but then when I came up with a game plan it turned out that drilling and mounting all my accessories was the easiest and safest option. You can mount the transducer inside the hallow hull of the kayak and glue it down and it works just like if it were in the water. I also store the battery inside a waterproof case inside the hallow hull. I then just run the cables up and out of a small hole I drilled near the fishfinder and plug it in the fishfinder when I'm using it. This way you don't have some many exposed cables on the deck of the boat

There are clear mounting tracks you can buy for those LED lights which hold them in place with tension. Not sure what width you have, but that may be an option. Double sided tape probably wouldn't hold up for long in the water, so you could probably run a bead of clear caulk down it along with drilling a few screws into the kayak to keep it in place

Hey Jon, Those LED's look better if you can mount them somewhere you don't actually see the LED's, so you just get the light 'casting' or reflecting off other surfaces.... not sure if your yak will allow that kind of mounting though. The 3M sticky tape sometimes doesn't stick very well (especially after a few days/hours and some heat). Wherever the tape 'unsticks' just use a dab of crazy glue from the dollar store (gel is less messy).

Hey Jon I know how you can install a trolling motor on your kayak. I have a Walmart Sundolphin 8' sit in kayak and I installed a trolling motor on it. I put a 10lb thrust because my kayak is very light and it sinks in but I made it light weight and it works amazing. Put 2 PVC pipes in your rod holders that are in your kayak. Use a 2x4 and U-bolt it to the PVC pipes and then just clamp your trolling motor to the 2x4. It works for me even though my kayak is very light and since you have a heavier duty one you can put a bigger trolling motor on yours. Trust me it will be one of your favorite customizations on your kayak.

Hey Jon! Some of your stuff you're trying to mount could have a permanent mount (you mentioned not wanting to drill holes in the kayak) with a secondary attachment. You'd have to drill holes for that, though.

If you're set on not drilling... you're familiar with GoPro doodads, ya? Maybe you could retrofit some adhesive GoPro mounts (which are super strong!) No drilling, secure, and you can always buy more and relocate something if you're not happy with where it is!

Mount the milk create right behind the seat so you can access it on the water, get a water proof battery compartment to put the 12v batt in just in case you flip the yak, or you could mount the batter inside the hull of the yak. But id put it in the milk create. Also get a anchor system and trolly line setup. You can add a trolling motor if you wanted. Id also raise the seat up too.

Jon, awesome to see you showing love to the yak angler community. Just started fishing from one myself so it's awesome to see someone going through the same hype I am. Do yourself a favor get some leashes for your rods and paddle will save you if a rod goes over board or paddle falls out of the holder. Also if you plan on fishing in any wind or chop water get a anchor and attach it to a trolley nothing worse than finding a sweet spot and constantly having to paddle back to it cuz of the wind. Oh and instead of tagging the side with stickers get a flagpole with a light and a dope rigged flag! Keep up the good content thanks!

Hey Jon, love seeing you getting into this whole kayak fishing world. Honestly have much respect for you and how you keep things practical. Would love to help on kayaking things, for your transducer arm, buy this to attach to track:
https://www.amazon.com/Scotty-438-Gear-Track-Adapter/dp/B009JAZW6O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1508256918&sr=8-3&keywords=scotty+gear+head
You can buy a small waterproof plastic container for your battery, run wires through box or even install like a usb female plug, or both, then you could run your Lowrance and your led lights. Whats nice about running some time of plug/adapter to the box, you can leave battery in your crate and just unplug for transportation as you mentioned. I run this setup in my yak, but you can add more adapters as I mentioned before.

Lol, the struggles of kayak angling lol. The paddle holder is a great idea. I bought myself a paddle leash but I like ur idea with the paddle holder. I've installed those lights before and they come with not so good adhesive strips that will eventually fall off. Have u ever used contact cement? Get a tiny brush and contact cement and make sure u also buy some goof off or mineral spirits and a clean rag to clean up excess glue. Read instruction on how to aply because there is a drying period before u actually connect the light strip to the yak. Or ur other option would be to buy a bunch of wire clips that fit the light strip and doing it that way. But that would include screwing into the yak. Just remember if u screw into ur yak just put a dab of silicone on the screw or a lot of accesseries come with washers so u really have nothing to worry about. Just set ur screw gun on a lower setting so u done screw right thru the yak. There are plenty of kayak rigging videos out there as well. So they could help. Feel free to hit me back if u need more help.

I have those lights and they are super bright. I would not recommend putting them on top of the rail. They will essentially blind you in the dark. I would run them around the outside edge of the kayak so the light reflects into the water and not directly into your eyes. Also those lights are very fickle, so do not put any tight bends in the lights when stringing or they will not work. good luck!

Transducers can read through plastic. Go on ACK and get a transducer pad and Marine Goop and put it Inside that storage compartment between your legs and get rid of that accessory arm. Cabelas sells a smaller 12v battery that is smaller that I mounted on the inside the same waterproof compartment with Velcro. You would have to drill a small hole near the finders screen to run your wires. I never had any issues whatsoever with anything coming loose or misreads on the screen.

If I'm not mistaken they make battery packs for the yaks. Also you definitely need to get some leashes. Leashes for your rods and then definitely get a leash for your paddle . I normally keep my paddle across my lap all the time and when I go to set the hook if It slides off, the leash keeps it nearby.
Also some friendly advice, when the water warms back up take all your gear out of your kayak. Go to the water, and attempt to flip your kayak. By doing so you will have an idea of how much you can lean before you actually flip. So when you're in a real life fishing situation trying to get that 12 pounder out of the brush, you'll know the limits. Excited to see these videos come!.

just dont put the LEDs on the upper rim because it will be annoyy for your eyes and you wont be able to put the yak on your roof. I think they would look good on the sides of the fore and aft ends but not the middle

id say line the inner rim of the yak that way your not getting blinded by the lights if theyre facing up plus youll light up the inside and the lights will be easier to mount on the inside versus the topside cause the wire doesn't curve when its flat, ya dig...

Hey Jon i think u definitely need to run the strip lights along the inside of the kayak so that the light is not just coming straight up into your face and it will light up all of your gear in the kayak. Remember that a little bit goes a long way and you might only need one of those strips to light the whole kayak up.

You can order a watertight hatch. Put in a hatch in the front or under your seat and it will give you access to inside your hull. That'll let you run all your wiring out of sight. Give you rod storage. A place for the battery. You get the drift.

Maybe you should try and mount some rubber stripping kinda like what your foot pad is made of on the rails or some kind of soft rubber. It should hold the paddle from sliding instead of having to worry about putting it in the holder while you are reeling in a fish.

milk crate in back wit rod holders... and put divets in the front to hold the paddle when casting/reeling and that is a perfect setup

Probably a mount to secure the battery and battery caps wouldn't want to hit the leads and catch fire in the middle of the lake lol
