Don't Make this Anchor Trolley Mistake Kayak Fishing
Kayak 8 years ago 120,287 views
A big wave is about to hit... the anchor snags violently on the bottom in strong current ... or even a nice fish is about to wrap around the anchor line .. don't grab frantically for a knife and hope you can cut the line (or your trolley) in time - just connect the anchor to the boat the correct way! Two weeks ago, I attended a seminar where the guide related a story. He was fishing in his kayak, and the anchor snagged, pulling the boat over. He said he was able to grab his knife and cut the anchor trolley free since he could not reach the anchor line. Really??? If a guide can make this mistake, others can as well. Do it the right way! Since there is effort to paddle thru the weeds, I did not notice the slight drag of the pole falling out. Painful!

Funny about the used yaks.... seems like folks use them until they crack apart or... if put on Craigslist, go quickly. I was lucky to get mine used. I just happened to be at the kayak store when they got it in. If your kayak store also sells used kayaks, ask them to call you when they get a model in. You can do quick research and then call them back to confirm you are interested enough to come in to look at it.
Be sure you buy a yak with a good seat! Sit in it and paddle it before you commit.
Great tip to avoid anchor danger. I just wish there was some way to incorportate the slip knot with a retractable (clothesline) system.
Keep hacking!

I am new and curious. I seem to see most people mounting their anchor trolley system to the left side of the kayak (as you're sitting in the seat). Is that fairly standard side? I am right handed.
Thanks! Gary
While I was thinking this over, I stumbled across your video. I don't see any means on your yak of locking the trolley line. Can I use the zig-zag cleat for a slip-knot quick release, the way you've shown it, rather than to lock the line? Or is there something I don't understand about the necessity of locking the line in place?
That's interesting. I would have thought the pull from the anchor would eventually move the ring to one end of the yak or the other, even if the line only passes through the ring. Maybe it doesn't matter; can't see why I would ever want it in the middle. The bow and stern seem to be the best positions for fishing. OK, so I should probably mount a small plastic hook in place of the zig-zag, just to keep the middle of the upper line where I can each it. I'll mount the zig-zag alongside the seat and use it as a quick-disconnect.
Many thanks for this video. You'll probably be responsible for someone's survival at some point down the road.
Happy fishin'!
In the vid, I show the anchor line going from the cleat (slip or zig zag are both ok) through the trolley ring and then to the anchor. That way, you always have control over the anchor. The ring will stay in place wherever you position it even though the line runs back to the cleat.
Thanks for a good question!
Most of the Cleat Hitch is a figure 8 'wrap'. Tension should decrease with each wrap, and there should only be minimal tension on the last wrap (which will come mostly from the tag end). If there is too much tension, just add an extra wrap before the last one that's 'flipped', though 2 wraps and the flipped one should be sufficient most of the time. The direction the load is coming from determines the direction of the first wrap, and that's important. To release, grab the line where it last loop crosses the tag end and pull it off the horn, then unwrap. You can also partially unwrap and use the mechanical advantage of the first wrap to either pull line in or let it out slowly, allowing you to fine tune the position of the boat on an anchor or at a dock.
It can be done one-handed, but isn't 'quick release' if that's what you're going for. But, it also won't come undone as easily as a slip knot or a highwayman's hitch (which can also be tied to a cleat) if the boat is bobbing in a wave and there is not constant tension on the line.

Attention to detail is important.Just my 2 cents worth.
Great video in all!
