Don't Make this Anchor Trolley Mistake Kayak Fishing

A big wave is about to hit... the anchor snags violently on the bottom in strong current ... or even a nice fish is about to wrap around the anchor line .. don't grab frantically for a knife and hope you can cut the line (or your trolley) in time - just connect the anchor to the boat the correct way! Two weeks ago, I attended a seminar where the guide related a story. He was fishing in his kayak, and the anchor snagged, pulling the boat over. He said he was able to grab his knife and cut the anchor trolley free since he could not reach the anchor line. Really??? If a guide can make this mistake, others can as well. Do it the right way! If you have your anchor rope on a reel......How does the reel fit thru the ring on your trolley for emergency disconnect. It can't. It seems you would have to have a way to disconnect the ring also or have another way to connect to the ring which you are saying not to do. Better would be to clip onto the ring wth another devise.
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 6 years ago
The reel is on the other side of the ring. The line goes from the reel to the float to the ring to the cleat. The line tied from the cleat to the float goes thru the ring and floats away when disconnected.

I sold the Native to offset the cost of the Coosa and do not regret selling it for an instant. Although it had plenty of internal storage, it is basically a cut down canoe. Any water that gets inside stays inside until you mop it up. Additionally, it was not really recoverable if it flipped.

No problem on thunder! The stick it poles came with a clip with a small velcro strap. The problem is the strap only stops the pole from popping out to the side, not the back. I lost mine going thru weeds. The weeds caught on the handle, pulled it out towards the rear. When the pole was out, the attachment cord played out and the loop stick it provided to hold the pole slid off. I should have tied everything securely to the handle and not relied on the loop.

Since there is effort to paddle thru the weeds, I did not notice the slight drag of the pole falling out. Painful!
Perchjerker
Perchjerker - 7 years ago
Excuse me Steve. I'm not trying to steal your thunder. I have an idea about those pole holders too. Particular to the holders thar are hard plastic clips, that look like C on its side. Before attaching them to the yak, why not put around a 1" x 4" piece of velco under it. After the pole is placed in the clip, secure the clip closed with the velcro. I don't understand why more velcro isn't used in rigging. What do you think?
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 7 years ago
The poles came with their own holders that worked great to keep the pole from falling out perpendicular to the yak, but the thing would just slide out the back. My real problem ... and shame on me .... is that I did not have a float attached to it so I could go find it. Also, I failed to use a cable tie to really crank down the loop provided. The pole goes thru a loop attached to a strap. I'm all in on one of your fiberglass poles!
Perchjerker

Why not secure it to the yak via paddle holders?

That would work. Question - I do not let all my line out at once. Only what I need in a particular spot and then wrap the remaining around the float. Is the dummy strong enough for that? Here is the link to what I do so you can see -

The Coast Guard says you should use an anchor rope that is 3 times the depth. Mine is about 25 feet since I fish shallow all the time. Yes to the float. In the video, you can see the blue thing. That is a pool noodle I use for the float. I describe how to make it in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRXOt4jXCZg

Funny about the used yaks.... seems like folks use them until they crack apart or... if put on Craigslist, go quickly. I was lucky to get mine used. I just happened to be at the kayak store when they got it in. If your kayak store also sells used kayaks, ask them to call you when they get a model in. You can do quick research and then call them back to confirm you are interested enough to come in to look at it.

Be sure you buy a yak with a good seat! Sit in it and paddle it before you commit.

Thanks. You are a wealth of information! I gave it some thought and decided to mount the trolley on the right side. On my car top carrier I have it on left side of vehicle. Therefore my kayak is in that rack on its left side. Can't put an anchor trolley on that side then. Haveta put some forethought into it. In the Army they taught us the Rule of 5 P's. That seems like the most common sense way of using an anchor trolley. I use a carabiner instead of a solid ring on my trolley so I can get the anchor line into it via the spring loaded opening and I don't have to thread the end of the anchor line through it- I have my line wrapped around a side-winder line reel-I don't want all that loose line laying at my feet. And I use a zig-zag cleat
Cuivre
Cuivre - 7 years ago
After looking at things, I just clipped a carabiner to the solid anchor trolley ring (I did not replace the ring with the carabiner). It should work just as good though and I can pull the ring/carabiner to whichever end of the yak I want it-then lever lock it in place. There are more ways to tie an anchor line to a trolley system than you can shake a stick at!
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 7 years ago
I like the carabiner for easy setup! Good point on the loose line as well!
TriodeLuvr
TriodeLuvr - 7 years ago
The anchor trolley kit I just bought came with a zig-zag cleat. The manufacturer intends it to be used to lock the trolley line in place. I've been wondering why that would be necessary. Seems to me, the yak will always position itself "down-current," away from the position of the trolley ring. The weight of the yak pulling against the anchor will keep the ring at whichever end it was pulled to.

While I was thinking this over, I stumbled across your video. I don't see any means on your yak of locking the trolley line. Can I use the zig-zag cleat for a slip-knot quick release, the way you've shown it, rather than to lock the line? Or is there something I don't understand about the necessity of locking the line in place?
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 7 years ago
It's weird, but the ring stays put. I guess it is because the pull does not transfer down the right angle to the cleat.
TriodeLuvr
TriodeLuvr - 7 years ago
"The ring will stay in place wherever you position it even though the line runs back to the cleat."

That's interesting. I would have thought the pull from the anchor would eventually move the ring to one end of the yak or the other, even if the line only passes through the ring. Maybe it doesn't matter; can't see why I would ever want it in the middle. The bow and stern seem to be the best positions for fishing. OK, so I should probably mount a small plastic hook in place of the zig-zag, just to keep the middle of the upper line where I can each it. I'll mount the zig-zag alongside the seat and use it as a quick-disconnect.

Many thanks for this video. You'll probably be responsible for someone's survival at some point down the road.

Happy fishin'!
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 7 years ago
I recently replaced the cleat I show in this video with a zig zag. It is just as fast to undo that as it is to have the slip knot. The key that you might be missing is that the anchor line should not be attached to the trolley ring. If you do that, you are correct, the yak will position downstream. However, if you get in trouble or the trolley line slides under the yak as I show in the video, it is really hard to break loose or recover.

In the vid, I show the anchor line going from the cleat (slip or zig zag are both ok) through the trolley ring and then to the anchor. That way, you always have control over the anchor. The ring will stay in place wherever you position it even though the line runs back to the cleat.

Thanks for a good question!

Lee Mychajluk - 7 years ago
Ha! You made me look, but yes, that's the right link.

Most of the Cleat Hitch is a figure 8 'wrap'. Tension should decrease with each wrap, and there should only be minimal tension on the last wrap (which will come mostly from the tag end). If there is too much tension, just add an extra wrap before the last one that's 'flipped', though 2 wraps and the flipped one should be sufficient most of the time. The direction the load is coming from determines the direction of the first wrap, and that's important. To release, grab the line where it last loop crosses the tag end and pull it off the horn, then unwrap. You can also partially unwrap and use the mechanical advantage of the first wrap to either pull line in or let it out slowly, allowing you to fine tune the position of the boat on an anchor or at a dock.

It can be done one-handed, but isn't 'quick release' if that's what you're going for. But, it also won't come undone as easily as a slip knot or a highwayman's hitch (which can also be tied to a cleat) if the boat is bobbing in a wave and there is not constant tension on the line.
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 7 years ago
But the cleat hitch cannot be released with one pull when tension is on the rope. Did the url go to the wrong knot?

That's why you put a quick release rig to it with some type of float or a small buoy at one end to retrieve it later . Another thing that will help so your trolley line doesn't fall to the bottom of the hull. Keep your line snug when it's sagging like that. There is plenty of adjustment to tighten it up a little. Add a pad eye near your bow and stern, which I noticed you do not have. It helps everything to stay above the water line.
Attention to detail is important.Just my 2 cents worth.

Np. pad eyes are not a problem you just have to undo your line to run it through. When installing make sure you angle them in a wee bit so the bottoms are angled towards midship. I'm sure there would be a video somewhere by a professional yak installer for trolley systems. Any how just to let ya know not trying to be a smart ass. Just a couple of minor details I had noticed, to pass on a couple of helpful tips to a fellow yaker.
Great video in all!

Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 7 years ago
Exactly right. That is why I recommend people tie off using a slip knot in the video. You also hit on the other key - have a float on the line so you can come back to it. At the end of the video, you can see the one I use, and I show how to make it in a different video. The point on the pad eye is interesting, and I will have to check out how that would work with my commercial trolley as opposed to a DIY one that would have built in slack. Thanks!

Hmmm. What you may want to consider is putting a small float on the end of your anchor line . Leaving the float end on the outside of the anchor trolley (the same as your anchor) thread a loop through the trolley and back to a cleat. I use a jam cleat as it's super fast to unhook. To untie, just pull the rope out of the jam cleat and let the loop pass through the trolley and you're free of the anchor yet it's easy to retrieve because of the float on the end.
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 8 years ago
Exactly right. That is what I do. I swapped out the cleat I had for a jam cleat a few months ago. Perfect solution since I do not have to do the slip knot any more.

Great tip!I anchored in deep water, in strong current, had my boat positioned wrong.Next thing you know, I was swimming. The current rolled me.Well I had my anchor connected wrong, and couldn't get to it.I am definitely going to use this system!

That almost happened to me as well when I was in my canoe a few years ago - and that caused me to adopt the slip knot. I did not use the trolley correctly when I first got my yak - for some reason, my dealer did not explain this when I bought the yak. Guess they figure everyone already knows it.

I'd just tie a "cleat hitch" on the cleat rather than a slip knot. It's made for exactly that purpose, of safely releasing a loaded line and it's super fast to tie once you get the hang of it.

Here is the link to how to tie it: http://www.animatedknots.com/cleatvert/#ScrollPoint

Great and important video. This is exactly what I've done since day one. Methods besides a slip knot can lead to the rope not being able to be released due to tension on the rope (this way is also extremely quick). I also use the zip tie reverse method (can't remember the name) for tying the anchor to the rope so I can unstick it. Safety first! Thanks for posting.

Glad you do this - thanks for the slip knot comment.

why don't you just tie your anchor line to a carabiner and then clip it to your ring. tying a slip knot seems like a pain

The problem with clipping the anchor to the ring is that once you move the ring out of reach, you cannot disconnect it quickly. The ring might also slide under the kayak as I show in the video and make it really hard to reach... forcing you to paddle to flip the boat to an angle where you can get to it. The solution to not tying a slip knot is to use and anchor cleat (ex: http://amzn.to/2aP80Pk ) since you just wrap the line around the zig zags and it holds.

Just for spits and giggles, was this filmed near Bayport / Pine Island area of Florida? Looks just like it. Thanks.

I wish! Fishing is Florida is so much better than here in NC. It was at Fort Fisher south of Carolina Beach.

Glad I found this info. The last thing anyone wants is to capsize and be in a very dangerous situation. Many kayakers do not wear their PFD's and drown. I also have a floating seat cushion. Thank you so much. Happy fishing.

That was an excellent tip. If you are in some running water, the chance of an anchor getting fouled and you getting your kayak swamped is a real danger.

I noticed this is as being an issue the other day while using my stake out pole through my trolley anchor ring. Being able to release and adjust anchors quickly is super important. Thanks for the tip.

+Ponky Perfect solution!

What I did to fix that problem was tie off a piece of string to the middle of the stake. Then run that through the hoop then tie it off to your cleat. After that you can position your yak however you want. The only downside is that if you hook a fish and swims around you it will tangle on your stake. So what I do is I release the line once I see it's a big fish that can snag around it. Hope it helps. If anyone comes up with a better solution let us know. Tight lines and be safe.

+mike follmer Wow... good point on the pole ... I use mine through the anchor ring as well. I need to think about that and try and come up with a solution that does not add clutter.

+Buckeye in a yak I wish my dealer had explained this when I bought the kayak. It took a close call in the current for me to figure out the right way!
