think about the boat rolling through 360 degrees along its length. if the toggle extends past the bow and stern your hand, wrist and arm is free from the rolling boat and you can hold the toggle and maintain contact with your boat. alternatively if the toggle does not extend past the boat u risk either injury as your hand, wrist will come in contact with your boat and attempt to drag you over with it causing injury or force u to let go thus lrtting your boat float free. neither are good options. in surf there can be large forces and things move quickly. anyway... try it yourself. also look at a nigel dennis boat. you will see the toggles are threaded at the extreme end of the boat for this reason. while they can be used to carry a boat on land (but better a firm grip under bow and stern) tjey are safety devices that work in conjunction with your deck lines to ensure you dont lose your boat. anyway... that is my experience. good luck and hope this is helpful. and remember with free advice you get what u pay for. work it out yourself on the water by doing your safety drills and see what works for u. hope this all makes sense. cheers

I agree about the paddle float but would like to know more about your reasoning that the toggles would be dangerous in surf and rough water, the only time I have used the toggles on the water has been a toggle tow of a capsized paddler to get immediate clearance from rocks before re-entry, in which case a direct handhold to the bow (toggle longer than the boat) would be an advantage but not a necessity - similarly, having a swimmer hold onto the bow in rough water while I empty their boat would work OK with the toggle in the high position. Am I missing something (this is not a troll or catch-out but a genuine question - thanks)?
