Fayetteville, NC Flooding 8OCT2016 Kayaking INSIDE a building. Hurricane Matthew

I made a little money off this video so I donated all of it to UNICEF to help with the hurricane Matthew relief efforts in Haiti. I know it's not NC but I think Haiti needs a little more help getting back on their feet.

Me and my husband where in Charleston and that AF base told my husband to evacuate. We ended up driving up to Fayetteville to ride it over at my Sister-in-law's place. Bad idea. We where going to use a road to get back home but the asphalt had been washed away leaving a huge, impassable gap in the road. When that was a bust, we tried for hours until it was 11 at night with a very unhappy toddler and 2 dogs because every road was flooded. Even though we have a big truck, we weren't going to risk anything with our son in the car so we just needed up going back to my Sister-in-law's house until day light so we could see better. Finally got back after 4 hours of twisting/flooded roads and dead ends and traffic. Back home in Charleston. Nothing. Even had power. The irony is laughable.

I still live in North Carolina, and I hope this beautiful state will come together and help everyone who suffered loss during this hurricane.

Packages are most likely safe. The main post office handles letters and envelopes, they were all rerouted to Charlotte. Packages are processed at a facility in Fayetteville about five-ten miles further north in a building that hasn't been affected.

My heart sunk when you went into the building, I thought you were going to be trapped in there for sure, even looked like the water was closer to the top of the door on your way out. Flood waters nasty. I've heard of people dying from small cuts in flood water. Cool video though, Crazy to see Fayetteville like that, I lived there a few years back. Happy to be back in Maine now though.

This is interesting but you need to be careful. Nature doesn't care about your rank and kayaks are flimsy. Go ask you wife/parents/kids if that 500,000 death payout is worth losing a son/husband/father to something as dumb as drowning during the aftermath of a hurricane. To everyone else, I'm so sad to see downtown flooded. They've tried so hard to fix it up and now...who among our mom and pop stores could have afforded flood insurance in Fayetteville? I've lived on fort Bragg for nine years and I've haven't seen something this bad since the tornado in April of 11.
Mark Huneycutt

This type of idiocy is why I no longer live in Fayetteville. Do not encourage people to do this. Flood waters are extremely dangerous. They can surge quickly, causing people to get trapped inside a building. Waters are also contaminated because of flooded sewers. If someone were kayaking and fell into the water, they could be swept under the current. Even if they were able to get back into the boat, they risk disease due to the fecal matter in the water.

Someone this March from my hometown of St. Tammany died doing this EXACT same thing-- kayaking during a flood. They fell out of the kayak and died.
Video has been reported for encouraging dangerous acts.

No problem! Fayettville is a cesspool of stripclubs and pawnshops. Fayetteville has 18 strip clubs, the most in the state. Charlotte (14), Greensboro (10), Winston-Salem (5), Durham (5), and Jacksonville (4) round out the top 5.

It has the most strip clubs in the states contiguous around North Carolina, except for Atlanta (31). Even with that, the per capita is higher in Atlanta (1 club/14,447 people) than Fayetteville (1 for every 11,000 people).

It also has high incidences of rape and heroin use. It's violent crime rating is a 62, while the US average is at 41. It's property crime rating is even higher-- 70.3 compared to the US average 43.5.

Most of the military families leave as I did. We were lucky to get transferred when we did.

Decided to edit your comment because you realized how stupid you sounded earlier? Keep on editing until you're outta here, buddy. People are very capable of making their own decisions. If anything, this will encourage people to not try to navigate downtown, kayak or otherwise. If they decide to go out and do this after seeing this video, their life is in their own hands. Good luck with your "report". Thank you for sharing this with us Mark, very harrowing and glad you're okay.

Don't. It will just encourage other jackasses to do the same. During Hurricane Irene, someone died trying to surf. And this March, someone in St. Tammany died falling from a kayak while kayaking during a flood.
Glad you made it through, Mark, but you're an idiot for doing so and only encouraging others to risk their lives. Video should be taken down. NOT shared.
