Man, this guy would think I'm crazy I guess. He obviously doesn't launch from the beach. I take my kayak out on the ocean with just my spinfisher 7500 (already rigged for live bait) and stiff 7 foot rod, a small old cooler that sits perfectly behind me as a baitwell for my croakers or pinfish, fishing pliers around my neck, and bolt cutters tied to my kayak in case of large sharks that I can't get the hook out with out cutting the hook in half. I literally don't even bring water (I am a marathon runner though and don't need any water if I'm just sitting for 4 hour). Launching from the beach means you want nothing loose if you get hit by a wave. And I don't like putting a bunch of crap inside the storage areas because it just gets soaked with seawater in there.

You are exactly correct. I do not fish in the ocean. If I did, I would change the stuff I take to align with you.

Kayak Hacks Fishing

I fish inshore out of Wilmington, NC. I do not leash my rods inshore or on lakes given the low risk of flipping vs the hassle. I would leash on a river. When I do that, I just use a dollar store dog leash.

Everything should have a bungie!
even rods and the anchor.

The idea that people pack kyaks and don't plan to roll over tells me what spoiled arm chair fisherman we have become.

I love kyak fisherman! They are so willing to share their best ideas (except I haven't seen one video telling me where their favorite fishing hole is). I guess all fisherman are funny about that.

I have been watching your repair video about plastic welding I have a Dayton Marine Catyak Catamaran made in the late 70's was wondering if you know how to tell if it is high density and what to do for a welding rod I know from an old brochure it is polyethylene I think your videos are great and appreciate your time in passing on that information. Thanks! Your help would be greatly appreciated cfarr@mineralarea.edu

I really do not know what to tell you. The Polyethylene might be the cross linked variety and that is not repairable. Maybe find a forum with experts in that boat and see what they say.

What I have been wondering, is why on one has thought of making a floating trailer, to tow behind their Kayak.? Maybe use PVC pipe or something else that float's. Your safety gear is in the most inaccessible part of the kayak. I didn't see a bilge or bailing pump, maybe I missed it. Ive owned hobbies and two have sank from poor design/manufacturer defects. The first time was a disaster with all the emergency gear in the front hatch under everything. Because it was so far away I panicked and didn't go them asap, I just tried to steam my way in until it filled with water and flipped. Second time (years later) my safety gear and hand bilge pump were right behind my seat. Rather than panick and frantically steam the few km to shore, I bailed the hull, peddled 20 mins, bailed the hull again and got to shore just before being required to bail again. In saying so, I had a plb, flares and handheld marine radio both times. I believe a kayaker (especially offshore) needs to be able to self rescue and as such, set their vessel up in a way that allows them to do so.

Good point on the pump. The safety gear in the bag is my VHS radio and my backup emergency beacon. I have my primary emergency beacon in the pocket of my PFD. I do need to get a pump. Thanks for pointing that out.

Wow that is incredible, the lightning detector is such a cool thing, because I know in America you get some wild weather. Here in boring old Adelaide south Australia, we a4e lucky to see one maybe 2 storms a summer. Love your set up very clever well done.

#35 You can also put a net on a Taco clip instead of the paddle. Many net handles will fit. If adjustment is required to tighten or loosen the fit, simply put the clip in boiling water for a few minutes, then bend to fit tight.

Do you have a video on your tackle box and where you keep your lures and hooks?
Also, how long does it take you to put on all of the accessories to get on the water.

I went to the coast and took about half of the stuff I usually take on the kayak. It still took me a long time to get on the water. One thing is that the Hobie kayak cart would not come out of the scupper holes. I had to dump everything out, and put it on its side to pull it out. I'm going back to the cheap Academy lash on carts!

Thanks

Kayak Hacks Fishing Thanks. I used the sidekicks in case a charter boat tried to flip me. I'm staying in the flats.
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 6 years ago
Yes, as long as the gear will not fly off on the highway, I leave it on. I would think your Hobie is pretty stable and the sidekicks would not be needed.

Kayak Hacks Fishing Thanks again! I wasn't leaving anything on the kayak when trailering it. I'm going to start to leave things in the hatch and leave the seat on. I'll have to add the mirage drive, ice chest, lures, and rods. I'm also getting rid of the crate and side kicks. Also, the cargo box on the trailer. It's a pain to unlock. I'm getting organized!

I have really downsized this year - the small box I discuss in this video is all I use. https://youtu.be/aaVoa56hEZI. I'll do a vid on what is in it. Good question on time. We think the rain will stop by Wednesday and plan on going out. I'll time the setup from when I get the kayak to the water. It's probably around 5 minutes. It's really just the two camera mounts, the rig rack, the bump bar and the anchor hanger. Add another minute to get the free ANGLR app going. Everything else is transported in place (rod holders, seat, etc). Let's see!

Wow! Yet another informative and educational video by one of my favorites on YouTube! Where do I begin? Adapting your modifications to my Ascend 10T with only a 4" dia round hatch. I have the stand-assist strap, a lot like yours. Anchor reel - definitely something I'll consider. Track at base of seat. I can add one, and the cup holder idea right there is awesome. The tool caddy! Yesss! The answer to my dilemma of tethering all those things to the base of my seat! I may tether anyway but with the caddy, they won't be all rolling around, getting tangled up. Velcro strip holders on side of seat! Another great one. Lure holder - love it. Crate or no crate - I'm inclined to agree with you. A doormat - great use! And the lightning detector - I didn't know about that! In Florida, it's a must.
I'm also wanting to find a better wheeled-transport system. It's getting more difficult to bend and stretch to get the scupper hole - based trolley underneath and in position. Thanks for all the tips! Now I'll get busy..... :-)

18 minutes?? You are one of the few I'm willing to give that much of my life to fella. Is that a product placement t-shirt? I wish I could have stared at an AO t-shirt for this long. I think now that you have rigged that Coosa out you can easily sell it as a package deal and get that Hobie you've been dreaming of and be like me. Those were some sweet mods Mr. Hacks.

How is the FD drive been treating you? Any issues?
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 6 years ago
It had a hum initially, but after using it for a few hours that is pretty much gone. I tried to do a video where I put the camera underwater and had my buddy pedal by in his FD to see how noisy it was. The camera mic did not pick up any noise. The water was cloudy and you could not see the prop, so the vid is not believable. We will redo it on a day when the water is clear. I did a vid on 4 problems I ran into with the FD - https://youtu.be/dxtTXA1MaSs

Hack #17 --- My Jackson Kilroy DT and Kilroy LT seats (3) came with an inflatable back rest pad. They must have stopped including those, as mine is 3 yo. Have you tried to purposely tip this new rig over in water? I remember your swimming pool test and how to recover. Let's see this Coosa on the pool!!

I was wondering why you put the wheels so far back. I didn't know they even had the short shafts for the legs. On your one video I was thinking my trailer with the 3" PVC is higher than most tailgates so I was wondering why you were worried about rudder dragging the ground when loading and unloading because I have 3-4 inches of clearance. Makes sense now. Are you having problems with tracking on your coosa as far as being hands free goes?

Kayak Hacks Fishing I bought another rudder just in case because they are relatively cheap. So far so good though it been fantastic tie on new lures and fish a shoreline not worrying about if I’m going to pull a u-turn. My wife’s FD came with the long legs skinny tires and so did mine and mine is a year old. She has the new generation landing gear and I have the old one. That’s weird although I did tell them what kayak I’m putting it on so idk why they went with the short legs on yours. Hers also came with thick hdpe to reinforce.

Kayak Hacks Fishing I also live and fish in Swansboro. I made a video not trying to get you to watch I just feel you are better at diy than me. I made a skeg for my fd that comes from the rudder and I rarely have to touch the controls now. I live at the waters edge of bear creek and have tested it thoroughly and can even cut across current and still not have to touch the controls. I bet as handy as you are you can probably definitely come up with a neater/ better hack
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 6 years ago
The short shafts are the standard legs that come with the skinny wheels. They do sell the long legs and they fit the skinnies. The short legs do keep the rudder off the ground. I had to get the long legs with the fat tires to keep the tires from rubbing on the side of the boat. On tracking, I do end up with my hands on the steering all the time. However, I have never been in totally calm water (no wind or current) to see how it actually tracks. Fishing in tidal marshes there is always a current and the wind is constant. Other folks have complained about tracking. I think I will go out and look at the orientation of my rudder with the controls centered and see if it is perfectly straight. It looks like you can adjust the angle a bit by using the hex bolts.

Great video. I noticed your Boonedox was close to the stern. Are you happy with that location or why did you not place it behind the seat in front of the rear accessory track?
Kayak Hacks Fishing
Kayak Hacks Fishing - 6 years ago
I had to put it that far back to get the height to keep the rudder from scraping when I load and unload it onto my truck. I am good with that spot for that reason. From a pure transport perspective, your suggested location would be better as more of the weight would be balanced. However, I would also be concerned about stress on the hull given the weight of the Coosa and worry a bit about cracks. But, hopefully, the thick additional mounting plate Jackson sells for heavy kayaks makes that concern go away.
