Rick reverse the blue seat cushion so there is a hollow where your tailbone is, that will take the pressure off it.

Hey Rick, thanks for the video. I was wondering what sort of CHEAP lures you can suggest for a beginner Kayak angler? I will be fishing mainly in lake Illawarra and Port Kembla harbour ( Wollongong ). I am happy to target anything that swims. Mainly catch and release - fun. We have a local K-Mart, Big W and BCF. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is a great video. You've given me heaps of ideas as to how to kit out my new kayak. Just wondering how hard it is to right your kayak if you happen to tip over on the ocean? Do you have a righting rope that you would use?

I'd think it's unlikely but then again I don't want to be out on the big blue, tip over and then wonder how I'm going to do it.

Cheers

Did you think about getting a sit on top kayak the seats are more comfortable and allows you move it in several positions. Also mean reason I got one is I fish all day some times and now I am able to stand up and stretch out my legs without having to beach some where. CATCH.PHOTO.RLEASE

Can you post a link for the anchor you use? I've never seen one in the US & it looks like it'd be great for a kayak. Thanks

Hi Rick!
I was wondering, how good is that kayak anchor trolley system that you have on the side of your yak?
If it was now, would you still use it exactly the way you had it when you shot this video or would you modify it or change it for another type? Pro's and Con's?
It's the only major thing I'm missing on my yak and I haven't made up my mind on which kit to buy....

I've fitted my battery inside a waterproof clear food container that has latches on all sides with two cable glands (1x fishfinder & 1x 360degree white light for low light/night fishing ) it's alot more secure than leaving those terminals exposed like you did especially if you ever tip over...

Hi, Rick, great video. I'm a bit of a big unit and I had back surgery years ago and the most comfortable yak seat I eventually found was the "Kingfisher" seat made by Feelfree Kayaks. Best investment for my butt and back I've made and it's really well made. Get hold of Feelfree Australia. And no, I'm not sponsored by them.

hey mate - i just bought a yak today - great vid - but the one thing you didnt tell us was the length of your rods

what would you consider the upper limit on size for a flicky 2-4 kg size rod - ive got a 7 foot rod i use for whiting/ flathead fishing on shore - is that going to be too much to handle - my yak is one of those haswing kayaks you can standup on.

That transducer is losing a lot of its ability to read fish and depth, those types need to be submerged in the water to get accurate readings. Great setiup though looks great.

I bought a really kayak a few years ago and it had a terrible seat. I found that Bass Pro Shops had a replacement seat for $85. it was twice as thick and so much more comfortable. I believe the brand was Ascend. It's well worth the money and clips in the same way your seat does now.

And the osp bent minnow is a surface lure like no other its action is that of a dying baitfish on the surface the smaller ones are 75mm long but they are so deadly I have caught bass big bream trevs tailor bonito salmon and even a small kingie on the 100mm+ sizes they are deadly with a slow twitching action or even just a slow roll

Hey mate if starting topwater I have two things to say berkley 3b scumdogs and osp bent minnows the scumdogs are a walk the dog style lure and they are either 48 or 68mm I love the 48s for whiting and bream i use my 68s for bass salmon big bream ep tailor and trevs they are an easy lure to get walking and the key to surface whiting is do not pause also I like a 20 cm trace of about 20lb for the whiting I know its to heavy but it helps the poppers track straight which is realy needed for whiting

G'day Rick thanks for the video very nice setup I'm looking to start kayak fishing and not sure what type of kayak to buy I've seen the cheaper one that you can buy from eBay with most of of the gear on them and they are around or under $1000 dollars that's the budget I've got, (kids and house ) take up the other $
Just wondering what you think of the cheaper kayaks and weather there are one s that I shouldn't waist money on

love your set up Rick. I'm just getting into kayaking myself down on the south coast of WA so always interested in seeing how others have set theirs up for a few ideas to pinch. I was wondering about your transducer.. is it whats known as a "through hull" transducer or just your standard type that would normally be positioned outside and mounted to the transom of a normal boat? I'm just wondering if I can still get a reading using a normal one mounted like yours or do I have to seek out a "through hull" one?
OffroadAdventureShow
OffroadAdventureShow - 10 years ago
Most transducers will shoot through the hull, no dramas mate. Of course the very best results will come if your transducer is in the water itself though.

Good video Rick. I've learnt heaps by seeing how other kayak fishermen set up their rig. With regards to the dodgy seat, try the Airhawk cushion seat available at all motorcycle accessory shops. I've gone from 2 hours of sore back to 6 hours of great kayaking and only slight pain. Brilliant cushion..

hey buddy, to help you back out, just place that EVA the other way around so the curved bit faces the rear of the kayak, it should allow your tail bone to suspend instead of taking all the pressure, worked for me any way! :)
