"Fools Overture" is the closing track from Supertramp's 1977 album Even in the Quietest Moments. Written and song by guitarist, keyboard player, singer and songwriter Roger Hodgson, the song tells about World War II England and the lessons learned from it. The song, which is over 10 minutes long, is a collage of progressive instrumentation and sound samples. First there are excerpts of Winston Churchill's famous June 4, 1940 House of Commons speech regarding England's involvement in World War II ("Never Surrender"), and later sounds of police cars and church bells are heard. The flageolet-sounding instrument plays an excerpt from Gustav Holst's "Venus", from his orchestral suite The Planets. There is also a reading of the first verse of William Blake's poem "And did those feet in ancient time" (more commonly known as "Jerusalem"), ended by a very short sample of the band's song "Dreamer". Its writing credits are given to Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson,Although Roger and Rick shared joint writer credit throughout their years together with Supertramp, they actually wrote separately. It is easy to tell the composer of the songs as Roger sings all the songs he wrote, and Rick sings the songs he wrote. You can see the song list at http://www.rogerhodgson.com/documents/songlist.html Fools Overture is from the Even in the Quietest Moments and also on the Paris Live album. You can only hear this live at Roger Hodgson concerts, Supertramp no longer plays it when they go out on tour. https://www.facebook.com/rogerhodgson Follow Roger Hodgson on Twitter: http://twitter.com/RogerHodgson To purchase Roger Hodgson latest album go to: www.rogerhodgsonstore.com Hope you enjoyed watching my kayaking video put together with Roger Hodgsons wonderful music. My Uncle passed away this past September at the ripe old age of 95. He fought in WW2 in a Hawker Hurricane with the RCAF and even as a teen when this song came out I thought of my Uncle and the guts he had as a young kid at 20-23 years RIP Frank C Johnson

Wow, ce mélange d'images en kayak et cette pièce de Supertram est tout simplement exquise et spirituelle. Nature, la mer, l'océan un moment de joie sans pareil qui te permet de te connecter avec la nature, son âme, son soi-même. (Wow this mixte of images of kayaking and Supertram is just so much that: nature, ocean and greatfullness moment of connexion with our mind ans spririt.

Will always remember my History class, grade 8, substitute teacher who told us he likes to teach history with music. We all had to close our eyes, put our heads down on our desks and listen to history within this song. I don't remember his name but I will always remember hearing this song for the first (and not last) time!!!! My husband took me to see Roger Hodgson last year and didn't matter what band was playing in the background, all I heard was the voice of Supertramp, AWESOME!!!! <3

This is the hidden book in the library of millions. This is the epic journey you feared to take. The extract of your life and lives lost. A moment in time when you arrived at the threshold of your dream. This is more than a song, its a combination of emotional sounds however it is the silence between those sounds that causes the greatest impact... the silence is what is yearned. Genius of the classics

The 1970's kids were the last great generation that loved this country like our WWII parents and grandparents. I fear for this countries future. There are no more Churchill's, Reagan's or Trumps left after us.
During WWII, Korea and Viet Nam over 50% of Americans served or had a relative serving. Today, 2017, only 16% serve....

As WE all listen intensely, surely, this 1977's 11 minute classic IS #1 of that year. It cannot be debated for FO is a throwback to the greatest compositions ever from Europe. 1966's Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" actually initiated this Top 40ish trend towards blending heaven-felt choral singing with lush classical symphony avec a touch of brass; however, Good Vibrations was a miniature version of what came in 67-8-9-70s when lengthy NON-BORING thus creative gems became more prevalent. The 80s had too many 4 to 6 min. repetitive DANCE tunes that became a bore along with their often ridiculous videos.

Running 10:58, this epic track was written by Supertramp's primary songwriters, Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, and Hodgson sang lead. The song started as a collage of musical ideas that Hodgson came up with, which they put together into a song about the fall of mankind. Says Hodgson: "History recalls how great the fall can be, while everybody's sleeping, the boats put out to sea. It was very much the way I was perceiving life, that people were in denial of the way we were heading and the way the planet was heading."

I had attended number of live Rock Concerts at the Rochester War Memorial in the late 1970s. I never saw such a civil looking college educated bunch in the audience until I attended the Supertramp Concert. Wind breaker jackets instead of leather and denim. I could not smell pot in the air either, which was rare thing at these concerts. Supertramp appealed to a different cliental compared to Molly Hatchet or Van Halen. Later in my mid-life, I became a student of the Battle of Britain so, maybe I can grasp the Lyrics in Fools Overture better than when I was a teenager.

You're both full of shit. I'm fully aware of Churchill's contributions during the Great War and WW2. He was a privileged Lord who went behind enemy lines to gather intelligence because he had access to other privileged people of the day. LOL, he sure didn't paddle a kayak across the channel.

Needless to say, this is one of my favorite Hodsgon songs. But keep up the circle jerk if that's what floats your boat.

Discounting England's crucial resistance against Hitler and attempting a revisionism that somehow elevates the amurrikans to the status of savior is quite laughable. Millions of Europeans, Russians, and Jews perished before the amurrikans got off their asses to participate. By the way, if it were not for the Russians who absorbed the most, BY FAR, military AND civilian casualties, the Nazis would have hegemony throughout Europe, Russia, and the good ol' usa.

Then came Jr and if you think that it's just the name Bush that has any ranking with the Nazis think again. Don't forget to look at the runway at Denver airport and try to explain that one. There is a lot of information linking the queen of England and other monarch's in Europe to the Jesuit Vatican and the Nazi's and they own the federal reserve that prints the money and runs the IRS for the queen and the Vatican They own the USA and if you still think you live in a free and democratic society then go back to watching the Disney channel..

Ah, I think she's making the effort. She has her belief, now trying to reach her kids; it's hard when the world makes mockery of spirituality. Not easier with twisted religious dogma. The derisive divisiveness is so extreme & programmed from school to social media. What is happening to all our precious souls?
Not to judge, but bless your heart & by all means pray, i think we could all use a little more prayer any way we pray, but just beware of stumbling another, ok? We all walk a narrow path & it's non the same for any of us. Love & peace.

It is hard to 'teach' spirituality to anybody, especially as our kids are programmed so young, but don't give up & don't let them succumb to this soul crushing numbness. it's harder if you get them vaccinated & they get broken but no matter what don't ever give up... but you need to reach them beyond 'logic' sharing experiences whatever it takes before it's too late becuse they don't know their soul is missing let alone - what?!

Try reading the New Testament of the Holy Bible and then come back here and retract your foolishness. Jesus is Lord (God), he died for the sins of every person who has every lived, He was buried and on the third day Jesus rose to life. The Firstborn from the dead. Because I have faith in Jesus, I know that I am going to Heaven when I die. How about you? Your kids? Your kids! Take the time and read about Jesus. He loves you very much! I can see the relationship to Jesus ok, but the islands sinking, lets take to the sky, is Great Britain in the second world war. As we took to the sky to fight the Germans and of course you have the sound of Big Ben, and Winston Churchill´s speach. "History recalls how great the fall can be, whilst everyone was sleeping the boats put out to sea", . This refers to boats going over to France to bring back soldiers off the beaches. I think you may have to be British to know this. Although Roger and most of Supertramp have lived in the states for many years, they are a British band.

My grandfather for example was 6 at the time and still remembers when all of the children were being shipped out of london to several places in the uk. Never knowing when you'd return -- if ever -- you even have a family to return to. He was unfortunate and did not, and was sent to live with "close" relatives who he had never met.

And they couldn't tell me what it was for.
But it was something they could lie about,
Something we could die about..you know"

Progrock Man
Progrock Man - 9 years ago
+Mark Pinsker Dear Mark, Thank you so much for such detailed information. I was very much puzzled with this song intro, that is Winston Churchill speach. I am portuguese and do not feel the same way the british feel when reporting to their war effort and suffering. It was an ordeal never to forget. I thank u for yr bravery, I thank the allies than we are now in a free world, when Adolf was defeated. But that should be a whole diferent conversation, Refferences to Jesus, when hearing "called the man a fool"took me to think of Jesus immediately. I am agnostic and do not believe in divine beings or any deity at all, but do respect all in regards of personal belief. Maybe u are right about the religion parody and other refferences. I am more enlighnted indeed. Still this is a great song, and any feelings it may rise or explanation to it, it's all that music is about. Thanks again for sharing your insights with me (and the rest of people who may take a look at it on Youtube) Cheers friend!

+Progrock Man Since I was a student thirty years ago I've tried to understand this song and I'm still struggling to be honest. The Winston Churchill speech feels very moving and persuasive to anyone in England brought up after the second world war and yet if you read the actual words of the speech the sacrifice asked for does seem crazy. The song becomes very wistful up to 6:00 which doesn't make sense until "called the man a fool" section which is clearly a reference to Jesus on the path to crucifixion. It then switches at 8:47 to the choir singing Jerusalem ( parodying organised religion? ) and that is contrasted with the aggressive rock and roll references - Jokerman ( Bob Dylan?), Blue White meanie ( Beatles?). So I'm thinking this song is running through the alternatives to believing in Jesus ( e.g. patriotism, organised religion rock and roll etc.) and leaving you with the feeling that the Jesus option is the only truly profound one. That's what I've got - if you've got a better explanation I'm all ears!

+Progrock Man Would make sense, maybe not about Jesus exclusively, maybe also about the prophets speaking truth to deaf-eared humanity, who only realized too late. Mr Hodgson is one very spiritual dude without a doubt.

If you said to a lot of people the name "Roger Hodgson" they would say who? However, there is no question he is one of the most gifted singer/songwriters' of our time (in my humble opinion) and for us original "Supertramp" fans the beating heart of one of the most innovative and out there groups in the last 50 years!

Hodgson at the age of 64 still performs brilliantly. A musical genius!

Back in the day, when America was still cool, we used to ride around in the country smoking "joints" and listening to this music along with Yes and several others. Absolutely! When live was easier, less digital and honest. Didn't smoke joints in the 1970's (too young, even for a Dutchie), but I remember the 1970's and early-1980's as a time with an utter feeling of true happyness. Like enjoying eternal walks in colourful autumn forests on a beautiful day, with a gentle breeze cleansing your mind. The music from that era reflects this feeling imho.

Used to listen to this in a drug induced comatose state, never realizing who created such a masterpiece. Now, it is different, can anyone grasp what I am saying? where is your mind and what are you doing with the grey matter now? after all, its just electricity...

Sometimes...when you get way out of your mind...and you're letting it all hang out...you have to force yourself to let go of it...That's what I've found in life...Let go, dude...you still have a chance to show that 14 year-old kid some respect...that is a tough year, and you can make it better for him. Just sayin'.

I agree with the fact that this is beautiful for reflecting on life and simply existing in the moment. But I disagree with your other statements. Music, in particular, is more accessible than ever. There are lots of new artists that are changing the landscape of music for the better, most of them aren't commercially recognizable but have large followings. Suggestions: Lord Huron "Time To Run"; Animal Collective "Bluish"; Local Natives "You & I"; The Shins "New Slang"...all songs to check out

I heard this song at my son's school performance for the first time in many years and it sent shivers down my spine. I thought it was good back in the day but now it makes you realise how unimaginative many of the band of today are. This should be a classic and Roger Hodgson and Co are extremely under rated. Unfortunately this song arrived in 1977 when Prog Rock was on the way out and I think it was simply overlooked.

@GhostsInMyAttic That is really our strength. Of course my cautious optimism demands that I question the 1965 Immigration Act and beyond, why the open borders? This troubles me to see millions of illegal aliens that could care less about our founding fathers and their amazing experiment. Add to that the refusal to learn English, our common language and methodology to keep the melting pot at a boil.
joesphx19
joesphx19 - 12 years ago
@GhostsInMyAttic To me, it is the best example of the West, to exercise evil in its midst no matter the cost. No other region of the world would or will do the same. Still, the problem remains, the West will not be defeated from without but from within. That enemy is far more dangerous than a foreign power making overt war. This is our time to become stronger and benefit not only the West but the rest of the world or, to head back to a dark age that will last a thousand yrs.
joesphx19
joesphx19 - 12 years ago
@GhostsInMyAttic Yes, no overt attack will be allowed but one would need to wonder why has the administration in DC allowed an open border, complete with the absolute knowledge that ME terrorists have used the route in the South to invade the country. This is all the while that citizens are being groped by the TSA. There is much here to be concerned. BTW, I really like your avatar. It means a lot to stand for Western society.
joesphx19
joesphx19 - 12 years ago
@GhostsInMyAttic It has always been disheartening though, to realize that at the apex of a great triumph, the people of Great Britain chose instead to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. To embrace socialism at the very moment that the greatest National Socialist power was overwhelmed seems over the top in irony. Though, sadder still, the touchstone of Democracy, the United States, would yet do the same. So goes the end of freedom in our world.
