Great channel! I’m a new subscriber and seriously looking to get first fishing kayak. I’m on Gulf Coast in AL and have both inshore and bass fishing freshwater interest. I’m 56; 6’3” 315 and no $500 choices available. I’m looking at Native’s Titan 13.5 so having to save some bank for it. I could find cheaper paddle alternatives but knowing my own limitations, peddle is a must. I’ve also looked at Old Town PDL. Hobie is great, but $3800 is too much.
Any alternate suggestions?
Thanks for the great vids.......keep them coming!

I've been watching most all of your videos and they are great. I've learned a lot, not only for kayak fishing but shore fishing as well. So my question is what are the best options for fish you keep? I live in Beaumont and grew up fishing the marshes here, having a stringer of fish tied to my yak seems like a bad idea with the amount of gators here.

throw a little cooler or fish bag in your yak if you are worried about carrying a stringer, and thanks for watching!

Live bait is boring to me and cheating. I baught a 300 dollar pelican trail blazer. Been working for me. I only fish lures. Actually I only use big baits. If your going to spend 500 plus dollars. You can buy a decent boat for that much. kayaks are nice. If money was no object I would buy both a kayak and boat. but just to get out on the water, fresh water at least. I recomend the pelican trail blazer angling kayak. I'm going on my second season with it. I have had some success catching bass in it. I hanvnt even got around to buying a fish finder yet. I just put the time in, read, watch videos and have confidence.

i just got the riot escape 12 my first big fishing kayak my first kayak was a sun dolphin Aruba 10 sit inside not built for fishing at all but it's a good stable kayak and I learned how to use it for fishing I used it to catch bass and mostly crappie in the shallow during spring spawn but I loved kayak fishing so much I upgraded my gear slowly and now with a big fishing kayak I can take and use my gear much better the point I guess I'm trying to make is you don't need to go big staring out I did it very small and made it work I had a blast with my little yak and grew into my big one and by starting small I am able to appreciate and enjoy my big kayak more you don't need a ton of big expensive gear or a huge expensive kayak to have fun you just need to get out there on the water and fish put fish in the boat and you will have fun no matter what size boat your in the allure of kayak fishing for me was I could go places big boats could not and that I did not need all that gear or to spend a ton of money just go where the fish were and the people were not and that made kayak fishing fun for me to pull the big bass and crappie and take the back to the ramp where the guys with the big expensive bass boats were unloading megar catches and showing off their big money boats here comes me in a 200$ kayak with fish that all of them could only shake their heads and wish they had I still love it puts a smile on my face every time

okay so I've kayaked before but never fished from one. Ive always loved fishing and I'm going to be getting a kayak for fishing. to be safe i was thinking about going with the most happy medium between tracking speed and stability by getting a 12ft length 30in beam width. Think this is the smart move? its also right in my price range at about 650 total.

Very informative video. I recommend getting one that is at least 12' unless you just run the rivers. The 10' seem to veer off to one side when you stop paddling. Also before you load up your kayak with tackle take it to a shallow area and lean over till you tip over
so you will know your balance point.

Do kayaks work for bigger guys? I'm 6'7" and 240 pounds - most of the kayaks I've seen either look similar to my boat (and as easy to maneuver) or like a toy (like I'd break it sitting down). I'm very interested in getting into kayak fishing as it'd allow me to access more water & get away from the crowds, but am hesitant because of my size.
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
You can absolutely find a kayak that fits your size. My recommendation is to go to a local kayak shops demo day and test out a bunch of different yaks before you purchase to find the one that is most comfortable for you. A few off the top of my head would be the Hobie Pro Anglers or Outback and the Wilderness Systems ATAK 140

I've been using my GoPro's for just the video and recording to the voice memo app on my Iphone.  I then have to sync the two in my editing software which can be somewhat laborious.  I tried a Rode Lav Mic with my Iphone and found it wasn't compatible with Iphone 6.  Appreciate the reply.
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
Audio has been my biggest struggle. If you use GoPro's like me the audio from the camera itself is not great. I've added wind protectors to the skeleton case for the Hero 3's. The Hero 4 Session gets decent audio but when its very windy its pretty much useless

New subscriber here. I am wanting to start getting into kayak fishing. I am 6'4''' and weight around 350. I do live in Alabama and I think they would be cheaper here but im not sure. I will need something stable due to balance. My sister in law has a regular kayak and she wants me to start going with her down rivers. i would like a fishing yak that I could use to float down the river as well. It would be mainly used in a lake and river. What do you recommend
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
Honestly wouldn't really know. You could try out the FS128T at bass pro. It's $800 and stable, but I don't know how it would be on rivers. Try to find a kayak demo day in your area and test out kayaks so you can find a good one for you before you buy
Countrybo1511
Countrybo1511 - 8 years ago
what would be something around the $700 range
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
I'd recommend a Wilderness Systems ATAK 140 as its super stable and should be able to deal with floating rivers. It is expensive at $1800, but its probably going to make you the most comfortable.

my first yak was a 200$ sun dolphin. Used live bait first day, was using my gear by day 3. Caught just as many on my table as I did live bait. just gotta get used to it, I wasn't spending 500+ on one my first time.. the one I got had attachments available sold separately, so you could build up as u like. very inexpensive too, can save more if you're creative and do some diy parts on them. my whole family actually joined in on the yak fishing craze, all 10' pelican trailblazers and Aruba sun dolphins. nobody can complain.

its all about the user, my first yak was a 10' pelican and I couldn't keep the thing upright to save my life. I just don't have good balance I guess lol
Rodney Hamilton
Rodney Hamilton - 8 years ago
True that on the minimum price. I have a $300 kayak. It works, but I wish I had gone higher. It is a bit tippy and does not track all that well. However, for those of us unwilling to dish out $500 - $600 before sales tax and paddle, there are way to improve cheapy boats by adding DIY skegs and stabilizers. Youtube is full of those.
Joe Galvan
Joe Galvan - 8 years ago
i just bought a 10-foot lifetime kayak from big 5 for $300 and I've had no issues. Took it out on the open ocean and did some fishing with no problem. It depends on the person really. I've also made many upgrades purchasing things from home depot like a baitwell and anchor trolley system. You can spend the money and buy the big name prices for things or just make them yourself. As for the kayak...like I said, it depends on the person. If I had the money to buy an expensive Hobie maybe I would, or just buy a boat instead.Point is, a person can make due on a small budget if he wants.

+Dylan McDermott Check out the Ascend FS12T at Bass Pro shops. Its priced right at $600. If you are fishing calm flat waters I think this is one of the better kayaks out there for the price. Also could look for used kayaks, some solid ones sometimes go on sale in your price range.

Great Video! What are your thoughts on installing a trolling motor onto your kayak? I know you typically fish marsh areas and shallow water for reds and I do myself but I recently stumbled upon a few yakers using hands free trolling motors. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
+Johnny Gonzales I think its up to each individual kayaker. Sometimes paddling gets tough, so having a trolling motor would be awesome, but you also can't use them in tournaments. They do allow for longer trips though, opening up a huge amount of water that would be difficult to paddle to.
Quentyn73

I don't like your advice for the following reasons: ABC, PVC and vying.pfu and other plastics get old and brittle over time. Kayak is a kayak, 200 or 2000 it doesn't really matter if you're sitting and fishing. Actually, more expensive ones are less stable relying on users experience and built for speed, tracking or other purpose. Wasting 1/4 of the price of a new kayak on renting is just stupid especially when you don't know what type of kayak are renting. Maybe this is good advice for some but doesn't work out for me.

Well, we don't have to necessarily agree in order to enjoy kayaking. Have a good one bud!
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
+Quentyn73 The purpose of renting is to see if you even like kayaking before you go out and buy a kayak, thus saving you from wasting a ton of money buying a kayak. You're wrong that more expensive ones are less stable. More expensive ones (like some Hobie Pro Anglers) are way more stable than anything else on the market. You can buy expensive kayaks built for stability or you can buy expensive kayaks for speed, but most fisherman choose stability. Difference of opinion I guess, cause I actually disagree with everything you've said here.

This is a very good video for beginners. I'd like to see a part 2. (or am I just not finding it?) I bought my first kayak 3 or 4 months ago. I live a block from a park in Winter Haven (home of the new Lego Land) with 15 lakes all linked together. (Gators and all!) I really like my Striker 11.5 but I do wish I could've tried it out first. It's a little hard to paddle for a 58 y/o! I can hardly wait to be able to fish standing up. Just wondering... where does "wear a PFD AT ALL TIMES" fall on your list?

+Larry Cooney more videos like this to come! I always wear my pfd if I'm in water deeper than 5ft, but most of my fishing is in 4 inches to 3 feet of water. Always have it on the yak though

Great advice.
I agree 100% about researching fishing spots first and renting a kayak for a weekend to see if kayak fishing is right for you. I've seen too many people max out credit cards on kayaks and gear, only to turn around and put it up on Craigslist 6 months later. TroutSupport makes great instructional DVDs for reds & specks.

The only thing I believe you omitted was what I think should be the most important rule: WEAR YOUR PFD

+adanvjr good point, hopefully people read the comments! haha I'll add it to the description on the video as well. Thanks

Good video, great answers. Now that the Kayak choice is clear, what to recommend as far as gear when starting out?
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
+Ed Bickford definitely want to get a milk crate to hold all your gear in your kayak in an accessible location. Obviously life jacket and whistle too. 3-5lb anchor with a float so you can quick release if you hook a fish. Geeze there's a lot of recommended gear. Haha. Looks like I'll be putting together a new video on this. Great question.

What's a good kayak between the prince range of $250-300?
Rodney Hamilton
Rodney Hamilton - 8 years ago
You could pick up a cheap decent kayak that is not setup for fishing and then pimp it out for cheaper than buying one already rigged. I have a Sun Dolphin. They are cheap.
Texas Redfish Hunter
Texas Redfish Hunter - 8 years ago
+Tony Fernandez I'd go for something used at that range. Might be able to pick up an Ascend FS12T for $300

Now that you have had the new 2016 asked kayak for a little while how do you feel about it? I have thinking about getting one and the new improvements that they have made on this kayak seems great. Just want to wait until other people out it through to the test.

Great video with solid information. I think I agree with just about everything you say. This video is a good resource for someone who wants to start kayak fishing or someone who has started but is still figuring out their preferences. Hooking up while giving advice... awesome! I definitely agree about starting with live bait, how much to spend on a kayak and doing research. Tight lines man!
