My first kayak was a Journey ss 10 like you have and most scupper plugs are too big to fit those holes but I found that soft practice golf balls will work perfect to keep out the water. Just stuff em in the holes.

Kendal, I love your videos and appreciate your sense of humor as well as your ability to produce entertaining and informative videos. You do a wonderful job!

At 67 years old I suspect I may be the oldest member of the, #GrayGang!

Now, please allow me---an old sailor, (stick & rag racer) fisherman, boat builder, and more---to explain a couple of things.

Think of your kayak as a big plastic surfboard with walls (aka bulwarks---on a large boat)

The floor--- where you put your butt and feet---are the DECK!

The holes in the deck are there for a reason. They are a modern day version of what is known as a scupper! Look that up.

Imagine Dude in a small but heavy under powered wooden scow plowing past you while creating a wake of more than a foot high.

In the right conditions his wake would easily swamp your kayak. (That means FILL IT WITH WATER)

The engineers that designed your 'water craft' understand that with a freeboard (the distance between the water line and the top of the gunwale) as low as your kayak is susceptible to swamping.

They were also wise enough to create enough flotation to support both your body-weight and the weight of the water that---should the vessel be swamped---sustain itself long enough to DRAIN ITSELF and reestablish the stability---however questionable---that a kayak of this size may have.

Dylan Wolf
Dylan Wolf - 6 years ago
Kendall, the holes are there so that water can escape the kayak when it starts filling up. I believe that your kayak supports a max of around 300 pounds, which means that water will not deep through the holes unless you weigh that much. If you would like, you can patch them up with tape, as they don't really do much good. Keep up the good work.

Those holes are called scupper holes. You are supposed to have scupper plugs in them to prevent water from getting in and pull them to allow excess water to drain out when needed. You pull the plug on land to get the water out before you store your kayak. The issue is that there are no plugs in there. #GRAYGANG #JESUS

They are called scupper holes and they are to let water out although under your seat is probably not really the best place for them. Most of your more expensive kayaks come with scupper plugs to plug some or all of the hole as you see fit. Also your better double sided pedals will have a round rubber cup like thing at the base where the shaft connects to the head of the paddle to help keep water from running down the shaft and into your yak as you paddle but not matter what you are going to get some water in your yak it's just the nature of the beast I mean think about it how could you prevent it completely?

Normally there's plugs in the holes. Easy fix is just to get some, but first do the none easy call the company to see if they were post to have had plugs already in them, and if they were post too, then tell them you didn't see any an maybe they'll send them to free.
