Jez Lucas didn't find it the best at tracking or upwind. Works a little but don't expect too much. Just great fun on a breezy day to hit some good speed.

This is an awesome test run example of this simple 'V' sail which shows how well the sail works. I want to build one myself, so I dug through tutorials and found JNR's... he does a simplified step by step. I would go a couple of steps further by placing a rubber block under the footing like Mike did with the foam to keep my boat from friction wear, but not sure if this is a good idea or not since I am just in the twinkle stage. I hope you do not mind JNR's tutorial posted here. It answeres some questions as to how the base is contructed.

Hello,
My name is Sarah and I am an Industrial Designer. I am currently doing a school project looking at designing an integrated sea and sail kayak, where the sail would not have to be an additional purchase or attachment for the user. I was wondering if you would be able to answer some question for me.
1. How often do you take people out sail-kayaking
2. What is your favorite part of sail-kayaking
3. What is your least favorite part of sail kayaking? (ex: setting it up, storing, drying, hard to control,ugly?)
4. How often do you use the sail when kayaking? (20%? of the time?)
5. Does a sail comfort the kayaking experience?

Seems functional but I would have liked to see the entire sail open and not just the base. Good job on the DIY sail. If you post another video of the sail being used and the whole thing is on camera, I'd like to see it. Cheers!

I would have like to have seen the sail and construction. Great video. I go out in seas like that and rougher on our strong tidal river in Maine. The tide can rise and fall 20ft in 6 hrs....strong currents, winds and waves! I stay next to the shore because there have been drownings for sure...have to be safe. I have a precision carolina 16ft sea kayak with some pontoons and a 55lb trolling motor mounted with a bracket I welded that hooks to the optional rudder spot...looks factory and I have had people ask about it. Going to rig a sail unit like this on it. Have a solar panel that keeps the trolling battery charged.

2:15 Tip: tilt the top of the sail towards you/stern to create a little lift so it brings up the nose of your yak and it doesn't dip into the waves.
Awesome job, I'm using your idea for my ESCAPE SOLSA SAILBOAT which I set up for rowing. your sail doesn't need the boom which would interfere with my rowing set up.

Majority of vee-sails will do some very slight upwind tracking, primarily a downwind yak-sail though.

Same here, this video pushed me to making one, mines very different, but same principle. Built my own 1.65 sq meter sail after pricing Pacific Actions versions. I'll have to add a vid to my channel, can't wait to get it out on the water on a windy day.

Jodee, changed the link which you were absolutely right about. Hopefully that works much better now. It's basically rips top nylon material bought in a local shop. Very cheap and easy to use. It works perfectly so no need to change for any alternative. Hope this helps and thanks again buddy

This is great! You may want to change the link to your blog, it may be the influx of traffic but it took me about 20 minutes to find the guide on the sail. Any suggestions for an inflatable kayak? Modifications? Also, what type of fabric did you use? Would you change it if you could? Any tips would be much appreciated.

Heh heh! For 'ambient sounds', check out my kayak videos - you'll hear nothing but the wind - and my favourite music blasting out of the tinny speakers on my iPhone tucked into the pocket of my life-jacket. That's how I experienced the days I was filming!!

That's easy to answer. I'd prefer NO music. I want to hear the ambient sound. I want to experience what the kayaker experienced. I want to hear the sound of the water. What about some narration or explanation while sailing? Now, that is how you make a good youtube video. People who click on a video, unless they are clicking on a music video they want to hear, want info or a taste of the experience. They don't want to be bombarded by the uploaders' favourite song.

@TheLimpingBarbarian. LOL! This is my number one comment too - though on a practical level, I find that if I get a free ride out, I'm fresh on the way back. Also, in a light or side wind, having the sail makes it easier to paddle.

@MrJossher700 - Try the Pacific Action sails. They should be available in the States. They're very similar to this home made sail and are designed to simply clip onto almost any kayak. There's loads of videos on YouTube. Also, check out my latest home made kayak sail videos!

I finally finished my sail a week ago, closely based on the sail in your video and blog. It's awesome! My best top speed so far in my Malibu X-13 is 14kms/hour (8.75mph), in a moderate cross wind. The sail itself is made from an old beach shelter! It deploys and recovers with ease and is very safe as it simply falls over if you go too close to the wind. YouTube wont let me include a link to the videos I've posted of it, but if you search kayak sail whangarei you'll find it.
