How To Re-Enter A Kayak In Deep Water [Standard & Trick Method]

This video shows helpful tips on how to get back in a kayak after it has flipped in water that is too deep to touch the bottom. Re-entering back into a kayak while in the water isn't too difficult as long as you follow the three simple steps that are described in this video. But on the other hand, if you panic and try to get back in the kayak too quickly, re-entering your kayak can be incredibly tough and frustrating. Note: To see the "11 Essential Saltwater Kayak Fishing Tips for Newbies" mentioned in the video, click here: http://www.saltstrong.com/articles/11-saltwater-kayak-fishing-tips/ Regarding the three steps outlined in this kayak video above, always be sure to not do them too quickly because that can cause you to lose balance and fall back into the water (huge waste of energy). And if you are having trouble getting back into your kayak, then be sure to watch the end when a common item like a sandwich cooler is used help get back into a kayak more easily. This cooler trick was a simple experiment I thought of while thinking of ways to make it easier, and it worked out way better than planned. Please note that we ALWAYS recommend wearing a life jacket / personal flotation device while kayaking, and the only reason we didn't have one on during this kayak video is to show a worst case scenario. For more kayak fishing tips, be sure to read this article referenced at the beginning of this kayak flip video: http://www.saltstrong.com/articles/11-saltwater-kayak-fishing-tips/ For more saltwater fishing tips, click here now: http://www.saltstrong.com

The cooler technique works great with my Sea Eagle se370. After practising in my pool I tried using the inflatable seat instead of the cooler. It works great also. Thanks to Luke and Salt Strong

What if ur in open water with 2m high waves?
Salt Strong
Salt Strong - 6 years ago
Getting back into a kayak in big waves is much more difficult. The first tip is to never be in a kayak when there are 2m high waves. If you do capsize in big waves, the same re-entry process still holds true.

A savvy businessperson could probably build a cooler designed for kayakers with a proper foot hold built on it, and perhaps even buoyancy built into the walls so even a full cooler would float. Or even a cooler that could work as a paddle float, would be a handy item indeed.

We totally agree with you that getting back in kayaks in rough water is much more difficult than calm water. The point of the video was to highlight the three step approach that is needed to get back in. And also highlight the importance of taking advantage of objects that may be on hand that could assist... if I were flipped in rough water, I'd be much more confident if I had one of those coolers.

flipped my sea kayak out on 4 foot swell...lost all my gear...couldn't manage to keep the yak stable in the waves....had to drag the yak back to shore with backstrokes in the water with one hand grasping the front of the yak....if it weren't for my pfd...I may have drowned. Thank goodness I prayed to GOD for help and managed to stay sane in the shock of that 8 feet+ wave which came out of nowhere and capsized me....I feel grateful to be alive today. If you ever kayak in the ocean...be ware of the swell forecast as rouge waves can appear out of nowhere and flip you over...not fun in the ocean.

It's a lot tougher when you're wearing your PFD. The vest catches on the side of the kayak as you're trying to lift yourself up over the side. And if you're wearing a skirt that just adds more cumbersome crap to get in the way. And wider, stabler kayaks make it even more difficult for you to reach all the way across to the other side of the kayak.

Nice trick with the cooler. I always carry one or two swimming rescue torpedoes in my kayak, so I can use to put in my feet to get a boost like yo did here. I usually put them in the end of the paddle to compensate, but couldn't get the technique right yet.

Dumped my Kayak for the first time last weekend in running water on the river and remembered this video that I had watched as newb kayaker. I am an older and a bit over weight fella and didn't think I would be able to pull it off but it worked perfectly. Just wanted to say thanks!

The cooler would be more safely used as a paddle float to keep you from rolling the boat again while you're getting back in. Or...you could use a paddle float (some states supposedly require them, though there's no enforcement of that that I've ever heard of).

One thing you can do is when you put your paddles in the bungee put it halfway that way it doesn't tip either way when entering. Don't panic number 1 you will wear yourself out. Our first rule is when you go on a boat wear your pfd or your not going

That's a BAD idea to leave the jacket out. Getting it on while in water is more difficult than swimming back to the kayak with it. Usually you get flipped over when you are least expected and the panic of moment can get you into trouble.

Do you have any suggestions as to what might make it easier for me to get in and out of the kayak including if it should tip while out on the water? Thank you
Salt Strong
Salt Strong - 7 years ago
I recommend getting a wide kayak for extra stability in getting on and off the kayak. Plus, it'll decrease the odds of tipping over. And make sure to always go with a friend in case you need help.

My husband and I took paddling lessons from a certified instructor. Rescue was one of the topics covered. Unfortunately, before we were to get to that lesson, during a paddling technique, I lost my center of gravity and toppled into the water. (The class had an accelerated rescue lesson!) I managed to right the kayak, but with my pfdf on (and probably because I don't have much upper-body strength), I was unable to get back into the kayak. To make matters worse, although the instructor and I thought the pfd life jacket was tight enough around my waist, it was not, and it kept floating higher on my body, making swimming to shore very tiring and extremely difficult. (I am a strong swimmer; I would have been better off in this case without the pfd). I like your suggestion of carrying a cooler. That probably would do the trick. Thanks for the video.
fukthegoog
fukthegoog - 7 years ago
Linda, just a heads up, most of the people that drown, especially at sea, are "strong swimmers". Every time I hear that expression I'm reminded of the study that found something like 9/10 drowning victims along some coastline somewhere had friends or relatives say that about them. It's like a red flag! Regarding upper body strength, much of the sudden lunge should be from kicking your feet, which wasn't shown much in the vid as this guy could easily pull himself. The idea is to virtually swim onto the thing
blipperUT
blipperUT - 7 years ago
That's an important point about PFDs -- tightening and buckling the strap is important. I was practicing paddle float re-entry for the first time a couple of weeks ago and the task was made much harder by the PFD floating in front of my face while I was in the water.

Glad to see that you enjoyed this kayak re-entering video. I'm by no means a certified kayak instructor, but I believe that it's always good to use any sort of floatation device that's on hand to assist in safely getting back up in the kayak because it's much more difficult to get back into the yak in deep water than it looks. Any floatation assistance can be a huge help if used properly/smartly.

So helpful. We kayak in alligator habitat and have that concern to capsizing as well. I wonder if one could remove the PFD and use that to help launch onto the sot?
wisenber
wisenber - 7 years ago
Most of my kayaks are sit in kayaks. A paddle float speeds up the process quite a bit. They also double as a back support or a seat when you go to land. I feel you on the gators and crocs. I always worry about them when camping on the ground sites in the Glades. I usually stick to winter when they're slower.
Daniel Booth
Daniel Booth - 7 years ago
Yes, a paddle float is a good idea. Have one in Florida. The Tri County Fly Fishers in central FL are arranging capsizing and re-entry practice in warm weather near Homosasa Springs. We are kayak fishermen in lakes and salt water, mostly over 70, and each have capsizing stories near gators, but no bites so far.

If you're wearing the proper gear for kayaking or surfing, you are going to have a lot easier time getting back in a kayak. If you're wearing your normal street clothes because you went out fishing and didn't think you'd fall in, it's incredible how much extra weight your clothes will have once they are fully soaked with water. The first time I fell in I couldn't believe how heavy my clothes felt in the water, fortunately I was near the dock and just swam back dragging the boat with me.

I'm sorry to see that you went through such a scary situation. So glad to see that you made it out safely by keeping calm and using the resources that you had. And now they are fully confirmed from your story. Tight Lines!
Salt Strong

Our apologies for not making it more clear, but the cooler wasn't being featured as a replacement for a PFD... just a useful supplement to a PFD if ever needed. The point of this video was to not panic and to keep you mind clear to make use of anything that floats to get back onto the kayak if you're having trouble getting back in the standard way. And this small lunch cooler was featured because it is a common thing people have, and it can be quite useful in getting back into the kayak.
Old man Joe
Old man Joe - 7 years ago
In it's entirety, not originally, just the first 4 and a half minutes roughly and even then I was skipping through the video to get to the actual demonstration. I was already taught how to get back into a kayak but I wanted to see if there were other tips or tricks because often times there are more than one solution to a problem and since I was not learning anything new I decided to not finish the video. The cooler is great but what if you lose grip and the current or a wave takes it? What happens if you accidentally move the handle and open the lid and the cooler takes in water? When I go out on the water I will continue to stick to a vest but to each their own.

http://www.mustangsurvival.com/blog/2011-04/five-types-pfds?country=25
Funny a cooler is not a recommended PFD?!?! I wonder why???? I'll take a ring buoy over a cooler any day.

I agree... all kayak anglers should know exactly how to get back in if flipped in deep water so that there's no panic if it ever does happen.

But IF it does work- and you happen to have a cooler in this type of situation- it could just be another possible tool-
at the very least- if your foot gets stuck in the handle- and you drown- at least they can locate the body. lol

I had never flipped until doing it on purpose to make this video. But the lesson was much more helpful to me personally because I now know exactly how to respond if it ever does happen. I recommend every kayak angler do it once so they are ready in case it ever does happen on the water. Fish On!

Don't you need to have your paddle on a leash?  If your kayak goes one way and your paddle floats off in the other direction, you can be in trouble.
Salt Strong
Salt Strong - 8 years ago
Having a paddle on a leash is preferred for the reason you mentioned... losing paddle would be very bad.

And exactly, once you calm down its not difficult to get back in. SOT that is

Were you wearing a personal flotation device? Must of been big rapids or swells if you nearly drowned with a PFD.

Salt Strong
Salt Strong - 8 years ago
I use the kayak shown in this video when I kayak fish, but I mostly fish via paddle board because the added height from standing is such a huge advantage in sight fishing. Here's a post about choosing the right paddle board in case interested: http://www.saltstrong.com/articles/best-paddle-board-fishing/

You can get rod holders that lock in rods/reels if you're worried about flipping. As for the tackle box, many kayaks have tie downs allowing for you to secure those types of items.

Good idea to use a paddle leash on a SOT. They have a tendency to throw you when they flip. With the leash you hold on to the paddle so the boat never gets away. I had the Heritage Expedition XL and practiced re entry with it using the method you showed without the cooler. Can be done in rough water as well.

Really fine demo. Coincidentally, I just flipped my Hobie Revo, yesterday. I was able to roll it back onto its bottom before it took on too much water, but it took on a lot before I collected myself and rolled it back over. It would have sunk had I not rolled it back. As it was, it got too much water in it to make a stable platform to board. I happened to have an Igloo flip top cooler like you demonstrated, but it never occurred to me to try to use it to re-board. Of course, the kayak was too flooded for that, anyway. Fortunately, some guys came by to assist in a large motor boat and I boarded it and they towed my kayak to the ramp. Ruined my 2 Veho Muvi video cameras and lost 3 nice Lews outfits overboard. Also, lost 5 boxes of baits.

Fortunately, I was wearing my PFD, but hanging onto the side of the kayak just made my legs float up under the kayak. I wouldn't have been able to get stretched out to launch myself up onto the kayak even if it was sea worthy?

I confess: I'll soon be 80, so lack your agility and stamina.

We're new to kayaking and are practicing self-rescue. It sure would be nice if there were more videos for us "old folks" for re-entry. The more tired you get after a few attempts, the harder it is. Anyway, we practice and are able to get into the kayak/canoe hybrid but are still having trouble with the SOT. Every time we try the hip swing, we tip the kayak back over. We're totally trying the cooler tip on Saturday. It might give us the little bit of extra leverage we need. FYI to Salt Strong - it's easier to get on without the pfd (because you have more chest clearance) so perhaps practice with and without for safety. Thanks for the video.
Salt Strong
Salt Strong - 8 years ago
Sorry to hear about the flip. Yes, it can be very difficult to keep calm after an un-planned flip. Glad to hear that you were able to roll it back over and keep yourself visible enough to get help.

And very smart to have your PFD on at the start of your trip because it literally can save lives... lures and gear can be replaced, so protecting yourself always comes first.

Josh Gundlach - 8 years ago
This is what you get when your an Angler first and a kayaker second.

Get a paddle float not a cooler, and a stirrup. There are two kinds of kayakers, ones that have flipped over and ones that are going to.

Get out there and practice self rescues before you need them. The aca has a kayak fishing course, you should check it out.
Salt Strong
Salt Strong - 8 years ago
I agree that paddle floats are a great safety item for kayaks to have. And I completely agree that anyone who is kayaking needs to practice getting back into the kayak in deep water because the little amount of time it takes to get comfortable getting back in can literally save lives.

And taking a kayak safety course is a great suggestion too. My dad made me and my brother flip our canoe in the lake we lived on as kids so that we knew what to do in case we ever flipped while out there by ourselves... I fortunately never had to use that knowledge, but it was comforting to know exactly what to do if it ever happened.

You can also use the oar to counter balance the kayak. But like you, never fell out. BUT I always wear a flotation device.
Salt Strong
Salt Strong - 8 years ago
+ntf607 Yes, the oar could be used as a counter balance (plus there's a company that makes a floatation device that fits on the end of a paddle which allows for much more stability).

And yes, it's a smart idea to always wear a flotation device when out on a kayak. Fish On!

Yes, the cooler trick worked way better than I expected... the original plan was to use is as an anchor float, but it kept sliding up the paddle. So I decided to give it a shot using it simply as a float for my foot that would get more upward force than a kick... and I was shocked at how effective it ended up being.
