Add a rope tied to a handle approx. 3-5 feet, at the end add a piece of 1/2" pvc, approx. 6 inches long to make a "stirrup". You know have a STEP for that first push back into your kayak.

I am very fussy about what kind of a craft I will take out in open water well away from shore, especially if I am alone. If the water is on the calm side and there are very few boats, I'll go out with an 8 foot standup paddle board sitting down on it or belly down but I refuse to go out in a canoe or any kayak that cannot pass the test as far as being able to reenter them without great difficulty. I have seen nice fancy sea kayaks that would not pass the test because their cockpits were way too short. My first kayak I ever had was a 14 foot sit in type kayak with bulkheads on either end and if the cockpit got full of water, I can jump out of it, tip it over, empty a good portion of the water out of it, and then climb back in it with no problem, even in 1 to 1 1/2 foot swells. These shorty type sit in recreational kayaks you so commonly see will definitely not pass the test as when try to get back in them, the cockpit will fill with water. How easy it is to climb back into a kayak without any help from another person whatsoever should be a major factor of consideration when deciding what kayak to buy. I designed and built some of my own kayaks on account of the fact that it is hard to find a manufactured kayak that it is easy to reenter out I open water.

Kayaking safety should be common sense but we had our first fatality today. Man couldn't extricate himself from his kayak and got trapped when he flipped over while fishing.

fishing on my kayak last week i decided to just jump out for a swim to fight the heat knowing that the water was 35+' and thinking that re-enter was going to be easy. God what a fight. spent 10 long mnts and finally gave up. had no choice but to effortly pull up my anchor and push my kayak to shore. scary as hell

Watch out for the metal rivets on the deck of the kayak. I attach a lead rope to my kayak, and have a lead rope tied to my paddle to my kayak, so if I ever capsize in gusty winds, I can grab onto either my kayak or paddle, before they blow away.

Easier to right and get on a kayak by using your paddle leash. Tie a loop in one end, large enough to fit your foot in. tie other end to one of the carrier handles in the middle of the kayak. Throw leash over the top. go round to other side of kayak, assuming legs are long enough (if not move loop higher up leash) stand up using the leash and your weight will right the kayak. Either use leash to climb on the kayak or kick yourself on the kayak as in the clip. It is ok learning to get back on in calm water with just swim wear on, but as previously mentioned much more difficult in a swell and wearing pdf.

Things of this nature make Youtube good. They always make me giggle. BUT a large number of pet owners are slowly and gradually KILLING their family dogs – without knowing it… The shit they put in pet food generates varieties of cancer and makes most dogs pass away young. I learned the hard way. My pooch died at 7. To save your animal’s life make sure you look at Double Life Dog Diet (Google it.) I am so relieved I stumbled upon it.

This one is funny, but with a dark cloud because it was in Alaska, in icy waters, and luckily the gentleman decided to try this at the harbor rather than cast his fate to the wind like most people do. If he had waited and was away from help, he would have gotten severe hypothermia as even the other kayakers with him would only be able to tow him to shore and let him continue freezing there. This is not always successful. The one I am linking here will show you how to really re-enter any type of kayak, instead of getting frustrated, hypothermic, or in need of an ambulance. I enjoy dog stuff on Youtube. I use up a great amount of time by doing this. However the majority of pet owners are slowly and gradually KILLING their family dogs - without understanding it... The junk companies insert in dog food causes many forms of cancer and makes most dogs pass away early. I came to understand the difficult way when my pet died at 6. If you have a pet dog and you would like to protect its life and be sure it lives for longer then you ought to pay attention to Double Life D

I surf an open, or 'sit-on' kayak, a Perception 'Flow', now branded Mission 'Flow'. It's very stable & sleek, almost a waveski. I can get on it & get my thigh straps on within seconds, I need to when theres another big wave straight behind me :)

This is one great reason to buy an "OPEN" kayak instead of a regular "cockpit" kayak. To try to get back into a regular kayak takes some doing, and it helps to have some muscle too. That's why after some 20 years of kayaking, I decided to buy an open kayak, for safety reasons that I've just mentioned.

This video is great. I own Kayak the Bay, Ltd. a kayak rental on Lake Erie in Put-in-Bay and get asked this question all the time. Thanks for showing how easy it is to get back on a sit-on-top. I always suggest a sit on top rather than the inside for the beginner. A wider kayak is also more stable.

I keep a lead rope attached to my kayak, in the event I capsize in gusty winds, which I can grab onto, before my kayak blows away. I also have a lead rope attached to my paddle, that is attached to my kayak for the same reason. You are more prone to capsize when there are gusty winds.

ok, now show us this in the actual ocean. I've swamped in the ocean in a sit-inside- and once you do, it's game over, swim that baby back in. Which takes unbelievable energy. I can roll, but don't often put the skirt on for time sake. This is tougher to do than the vid makes it out to be, even with a sit-on-top, when you are yaking baits out past the breakers in big water. Be careful!

@KayakFishingTales I concur! I had a gentlemen (intern) from Hanover Germany this past fall, he LOVED kayak and I took him out for a 4 hour paddle through NW Ohio in the Big game Angler. At 6' 8" tall he simply pushed the foot pegs to the end of the line and his knees showed the perfect bend, perfect for comfortable paddling I mean. At 6' 6" you'll be in a similar position with even more flexibility. Again, we went out in the Ocean Kayak Big Game Angler Good Luck

1:19 was a vital tip for me. And seeing that guy come back to his kayak at 1:43 in such rough turbulent waters really encouraged me. Don't worry, I know it requires a lot of practice, but the things is, I've been dreaming of crossing the sea from Salvador, Brazil to Itaparica Island(12 Nautic miles far) by kayak and of course a big concern has always been coming back to the kayak in case I fall. Now the waters here at the bay are way less turbulent than that. With practice I can manage it.

ttcherrick

@sanjuanx: Yup, my friends call this the "cowboy" method because you "mount" the kayak like the wild-west movie cowboys, slow-motion "jumping" onto the rear of the 'yak, one leg on each side, and working your way up into the "saddle". I can tell you from experience that it will work, but it is not as quick or elegant as some other methods.

One effective way to re-enter any kayak after falling off its crawling to the cockpit (or seat) from the stern keeping your legs open, surfing board wise.
KayakFishingTales
KayakFishingTales - 14 years ago
Nope... You're not screwed, but it will take practice to learn a re-entry with a sit-inside kayak. We'll post the technique soon. Truth be told though... if you're going to paddle a sit-inside kayak in the ocean a lot, you should really consider learning the roll! It will change the sport of kayaking for you!!
