How to Catch Striped Bass Fishing with Live Bait - Kayak

In this video I go through a detailed step by step of my live bait rig and on the water fishing of live bunker for striped bass. Live bait is a very consistent way to catch big striped bass. This video takes place on my Hobie Outback fishing kayak. Other popular live baits that can be used with this method are herring, porgies, spot, and eels. From terminal tackle to the fishing hook up this how to should give you an idea how to successfully kayak fish for bass. I use a spinning reel and rod to snag my bait first, and then rig it on a baitcasting reel and rod. I am dropping this bunker vertically on fish marks that came up on my fish finder. I briefly let the fish run as I am fishing with a Gamakatsu Octopus hook and don't want to gut hook it. An early hook set decreases likeliness of having a fatal hook set as I encourage catch and release with these fish. Hi Elias, Thanks for your video. I recently purchased a simple Lowrance fishfinder - nothing special or fancy, but thought I'd add it to my fishfinding tools ( blues, stripers in RI, MA, ME). I've seen that some guys mount their transducer on the inside of the hull of their kayak, requiring it to sense through the hull wall. What's your advice regarding mounting my transducer? Thanks, in advance.

Just bought a trophy 126 sit-in kayak. Have jetty fished for years but now want to be able to reach those fish that are not in close, in your opinion what are my limitations as far as distance and conditions for having a sit in kayak with no skirt for fishing? I'm new to kayak fishing just not trying to have a BIG problem on the water
EliasVFishing
EliasVFishing - 9 years ago
+Greg Bickel I wouldn't got near most south shore jetties with 8 years of experience. I have done over 10 miles round trip, but some areas I won't mess with.

+EliasV My local shops ony carry the Trevala rods. Have u used one before? Would you suggest the 7' ML(2-4.75oz) or the 6'6" M (2.5-7oz)? Thx for all the help.
EliasVFishing
EliasVFishing - 9 years ago
8' is a little too long for a kayak especially with live lining. I like 6'6" best.
Quabbin with Coop
Quabbin with Coop - 9 years ago
+EliasV I have a Shimano Convergence 8ft Heavy rod. Says it can handle 2-12oz. Wonder how well that would work in a yak for live lining?
EliasVFishing
EliasVFishing - 9 years ago
I feel up to 8oz is as heavy as I'd go,. You are going to go well over any rod that isn't a broomstick with live bunker. The most important feel in a live lining rod is the hookset in my opinion. The whole motion is in your arms as opposed to the surf or on a boat. The more work the rod can do for you the better. That's the main reason I'm using this rod.
Quabbin with Coop
Quabbin with Coop - 9 years ago
+EliasV I see that those rods are rated for 3.5-4.5oz. I realize thats lure weight and doesnt apply much to livelining as your not casting it like a lure. Knowing that, whats the max lead weight you feel is ok on this rod? Or does Lure weight closely match that of the max lead weight?
EliasVFishing
EliasVFishing - 9 years ago
+1020coop At my workstation it's a Daiwa 6'6" M Jigging Rod with an Ecooda Tiro 50A with 30lb KastKing braided line. On the water I had the same rod with an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500 with 30lb KastKing braid.
