How to Get In and Out of a Kayak

How to Get In and Out of a Kayak - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. One of the first things we like to talk about when you are going to learn how to get into a kayak is keep in mind that more people tip over the dock, getting either in or out, than any other place on the water itself. We have a tendency to be over confident about the fact that we should be able to get into a kayak with no problem. First thing I always like to do first off is look and make sure that you untie the boat because once you do get into your cockpit, you want to make sure that you can paddle away and not look up and realize that you are still tied to the dock. The second thing is - take your paddle and lay alongside your kayak so that once you do get in, you will be able to reach right on over and grab the paddle. Next thing is - sit down onto the dock, put both of your feet into the front of the cockpit, just like this, facing forward. I would like to teach people to take their outboard hand or their far reach hand and grab the side of the cockpit like this. Face forward, keep your weight to the dock, pulling the boat towards the dock, and then reach and over and have a seat right down into the cockpit, just like this. Then once you get inside, you are going to adjust your foot pegs, you get yourself nice and comfortable. Reach on over, grab your paddle, and then gently push away from the dock to get ready to start your actual tour wherever you are going. When you get ready to come back in, there are couple of things that you are always going to want to do as well. one of them is, you never want to try to reach out to grab the dock. You always want to work your way right up to the dock before you reach out because if you miss that dock by this much, you are going to tip your boat over. So you want to be able to reach the dock first, put your paddle nice and gently back down onto the dock. Pull your outboard leg or your farthest leg out up, then bring yourself up and over and onto the dock like this. Nice and easy.

I have two artificial knees. Getting in is rarely an issue, but getting out is an auto dunking. I haven’t tried docks, but when I get a leg out, the boat slides away, and the wetness ensues. I’ve tried the paddle behind the back and using it as a brace between the boat and shore. Not the best performance either.

Ty for sharing, you make it look so easy... With practice I will get more confident, I realized quickly that easy does it, go slowly, ty!

This is the best instruction on exiting and entering a kayak at the dock I've seen. Thanks for taking the time to share this great tip!

Are you wearing cotton jeans? If so, that is a bad example to set for the audience that you're addressing. Nice video, otherwise. Wish I'd seen this a few years ago!

It looks like you are wearing cotton jeans. If so, that sets a bad example for newbies, who may not know that cotton kills due to its chilling effects when wet.

Great video! Getting in and out of my yak is one of the more challenging things I have experienced. Low tide makes it even more difficult, especially getting out.

A couple of thoughts occur. One is that docks are often not such a convenient height. Another is that skinny boats demand that you keep your weight exactly centered - you have to put your foot right in the middle and keep your weight on that leg. Then there are ocean cockpits ...
