A lot of so called experts teach ppl to do it this way. Do not put your weight on your paddle. It's awkward as hell, can break your paddle, and it's just plain stupid.
You can hold on to both sides of the boat, lower your center of gravity, and get in slowly. It's a lot easier to do it from land as opposed to a dock, but not impossible. If your smart you will NOT do it this way.

What if you're trying to get into your kayak in Piranha infested water when there is an earthquake and you're surrounded by zombies? What then Mr and Ms Weisenheimer?

maybe you should avoid water sports altogether if you don't even want your feet wet

I've 30 years of kayaking experience, never sit on your paddle. It will break and if you slip/loose grip and float off downstream through a grade 5 with a broken paddle it will end badly. A carbon shaft costs £150+ Keep it for paddling not sitting on.  Rest it across the front within reach of the cockpit so it can be grabbed once your deck is on. With durable modern plastic boats the seal launch is the safest way to go.

Stu eightfish I agree it's not the smartest way to enter a Kayak. It might be taught routinely but that doesn't make it any less unwise.
It's better to grip onto the rim of both sides of the coaming then put one foot in followed by the other.

This video costed me a paddle.  Not sure what paddle you're using but any 2 pc paddle will likely break at the center connection unless you center your weight over the boat and paddle section that is directly on the boat itself and not on the center of the oar and rock.

You should really have talked about weight shifting that in the video before sending some newb out less informed than before the video only to be forced to paddle home with half a paddle..

Bracing the paddle on the rocks made me cringe. Would you do that with a $400 carbon paddle?

I wish I had made my cock pit just a little longer tan most folks do. my legs seem much longer and thicker than most men's legs. sliding inside in one go is impossible. I have to insert my legs then after a moment or two stretch them deeper inside without causing injury.

These are relatively easy with these sit-on-top and large cockpit, rec boats. Getting into a touring or sea kayak with a smaller cockpit is a different animal, especially if you have long legs. One reason I've come to love my single-seat canoe, even though it's a lot slower than my long boat.

There is a much easier way to get in off of the dock. I'm no expert but I find it extremely easy to sit down on the dock first, put one hand on the dock one on the outside of the kayak and then just slide in. Same with getting out again.

Vital point not mentioned here is to put your weight on the center line of the hull, right over the keel line, and practice (on land) the little movement you have to make to get that foot out of the way as your bum is about to hit the seat. You can get away with putting your feet "just anywhere" in a wide, stable boat, but any hull will seem unpredictable if your weight isn't centered, and a skinny boat just won't let you get away with it.

Thank you for this!!! This is the greatest challenge for me. Knew that I needed to consult the experts. Will explore and learn from your other videos.

It pays to learn these techniques. I slid mine in too many times and now I've had to make several repairs to the underneath side of the stern by welding plastic.
