Why do you "never stand up in a river"?

Because you can get your foot stuck. Not such a problem in still water perhaps, but in moving water if you are anchored by a stick or a rock, the weight of the water will pull you down and pin you against the bottom with no way to sit up, either to the surface, or to reach the snag and free yourself. Even a few feet of water can drown you this way. It might not seem like much, but when water is moving, it's not just the weight of water directly above you, it's the weight of all the water all the way upstream. A person in my local canoe group drowned this way some years back.

U never stand in the river people its dangerous u can get ur foot stuck on something and the current will be able to ouch ur head under water and it may drown u so never try to stand in the river

The same concepts apply to an ocean kayak. In all occasions you'll probably be surprised to be upside down, so that's the time to let go of the paddle (which hopefully should be leashed to the kayak), tuck to grasp the skirt's handle, pull the handle, and kick yourself out of the kayak.

wtf this video isn't realistic at all. of course if you over-intellectualize the hell out of it and "practice" in the fuckin calmest waters known to man, you're gonna convince yourself that you're some kayaking guru. and then of course to compensate for this they all go in fuckin whitewater rapids and act like it's perfectly ok to have to roll underwater and shit. no kayaking trip should involve the potential to have your legs trapped like that while upside down. the entire concept is bullshit.

Why not stand in a river? I guess it depends on the river, but to me if you can stand up why not? I stand in the same river I kayak in all the time when I'm fishing. Obviously if the river is big enough, you won't be able to stand anyway and if not than standing seem like the way to be. p.s. yes my river is pretty dinky but still...

Ivan Fish in whitewater rivers especially, the waters movie fast so your foot could get caught and then your head will be pushed under the water, and it becomes extremely difficult if not impossible to pull yourself back up to the surface

Why don't you ever stand up in a river? I'm not clear on that. I've stood up in rivers before, and aside from some muddy feet and lake grass wrapped around my legs, no big deal. Am I missing something?
