William Collejo definitely will work. I have used it for several 14’ paddle crafts. A 14ft canoe will be no problem! The same extender is linked in video description. If that is too expensive for you there are some other ones linked in video description as well. I chose this one because it easily transforms for use with SUVs as well.

Hi,

I see your kayak sticks out quite a ways from the rear of your vehicle. I have a 2018 Hobie Pro Angler 14 that I load in the back of my 2001 Honda Odyssey. Of course, the rear seats are folded down under the floor and the 2 middle seats are easily removed which allows a good portion of the Hobie to rest inside the Honda. Once loaded I use 2 tie straps to hold it in place. One that goes around the Hobie into the holes utilized for safety chains in my trailer hitch. The second one goes into one of the holes in the trailer hitch and then through a handle in the lower part of the rear hatch and back down to the other side of the trailer hitch. I cinch that down and the hatch gently rests on the top of the Hobie.

The concern I have is that I travel early in the morning (dark outside) with lights on and I was concerned about someone hitting the Hobie due to no lights on the extended portion of the Hobie that stuck out the rear of my vehicle. I made a temporary light kit and found it to be helpful. I now have an idea to make a really nice one with LED lights that I may offer for sale in the future. It will attach to the H Rail at the rear of the Hobie Pro Angler 14.

Just wondering if others out there have the same concern or if anyone else has already developed this idea.

Hi,

The reflective decals are a good idea. Enjoy your videos.

What I wanted to do is have the tail lights, brake lights and turn signals at the rear most part of the extended point of the Kayak as night time visibility can be difficult especially for old guys like me. Ha Ha

Thanks again for the information and quick reply.

The hitch extender I use in video has highly reflective decals which help with visibility at night.

Yes, but getting it back up onto onto it is my problem.I need something like a pressure lift to pick it up. At age 66, and a woman (and a knee replacement because of a skiing injury), I have a time going to other lakes. We lived on Lake Fork, Tx..and was fine while parked at our dock. we bought the wheels for us for each kayak..but to load and go to another lake became a problem. I love my Hobie..but gave them to our sons and am looking for something that works at our age. :) Great idea here for younger guys.

They make portable mini cranes for trucks. Just an idea. Also some hitch lift setups that could maybe replace an extender like in the video all together. Either way as long as your happy and enjoying life...that is what matters. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OBV2Y62/?tag=a41a9-20 or http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FAKNM0/?tag=a41a9-20

Contact me via KayakDIY.com website “contact page”.
I won’t necessarily fund your project, but I will not disclose your idea or use it without authorization. I will review it and if I see merits will consider funding it or assist you in ways to do so. Do you think you have the skills to build a prototype? What kind of money do you think it would take to build proof of concept? Another option would be patent and licensing it to an existing manufacturer of kayaks.

Email me. I know various people in the space.

How far back is does the extender go. so with from the top of the tailgate (in the down position to the actual brace? meaning essentially an additional 4 feet extension of the bed?

Where do you store your fishing equipment then? That appears to be the problem with hauling kayaks on bed extenders...
Paul Cherbini

Chris Thompson With my trailer I have the Hobie 12’ Revolution upside down on a 12” predator. 3 straps makes it really solid. Should be similar with this device.

The pro angler has rod holders but my outback does not. :( I won't have any space to store 7 ft rods. Also, the other unfortunate part is only being able to haul a single kayak with a bed extender.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 6 years ago
+Chris Thompson I have in bed storage (Honda Ridgeline). I also store items on side of kayak I. The bed. I can't recall issues with finding space to put equipment. I even put some items in kayak front hatch. The pedal drive is inside truck for anti-theft purposes.

+Reilly Dennison It is a 2008 Honda Ridgeline. I love it. It has a trunk in the bed that works for storage or as a large tailgating cooler. The tailgate opens two different directions. It has been super reliable and gets around 20mpg. The engine is 3.5L V6. It is front wheel drive like the Honda Pilot but has optional 4x4 mode.

I have an Chevy avalanche and I have to put the midgate down to have my 12ft kayak fit. it still sticks out 2ft off the tail gate
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Joshua Foster this might be a good option for you then. Having Midgate down would be a pain with rain during trips and being able to lock truck up (thefts). The hitch hauler bed extender shown is built well. Mine is stored outside, abused, and still functions and looks great.

I use the same bed extender for my Ocean Kayak Prowler 13. Its very useful. Very convenient when you go places where there is no trailer parking. I've used it down the shore and park my truck just about right next to where I put my kayak in the bay.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Steve Kuehnle that is why I love it as well. Some areas don't have trailer parking. This extender works great.

I would still recommend a bigger truck. I know you Passport guys love 'em (they're chock full of neat features), but I would have a hard time without my long bed.

+KayakDIY Element started out ugly, but the last two years were better looking. It was the functionality of the Element that caught my attention. Alas it was not the big seller so straight to the chopping block it went. The folks who still own them love them, and I agree. I must say that you, 30 miles out, nsz85 and Marty Z are my favorite channels here on YouTube. Thanks for the great work!

The Element is definitely a great vehicle. Some didn't like the design, but I loved it. Heck i think my friends on the 30MilesOut channel have one for their kayaking excursions.

+KayakDIY I manage to fit a 14.6' Saranac in my 9' bed with some clever strapping. I personally wish Honda would have stuck with the Element. Those things are so neat!
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Andrew Glass I hate the look of the new Ridgelines. Silverado is a great truck too. A longer bed would be nice, but I would still need a bed extender for some of my kayaks.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
I like the in bed lockable in-bed storage too much to give up my Ridgeline. It is like a portable toolbox/workshop inside my bed.
Jack Taylor
Jack Taylor - 7 years ago
Great accessory for a short trip; however, for longer trips and sleep-overs there is virtually no room for very much gear in the bed of your truck !!!
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Jack Taylor definitely a trade off. I do have a trunk in the bed of my truck. I have also stored items in my kayak and on it during transport. Nice though because when I go to places like Sanibel island I can't find parking with a trailer so I need this more compact extender.
Jesmine Ryckman

will this work for a angler 17t?
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 7 years ago
+Jesmine Diaz it will likely work but it depends heavily on truck bed length prior to application. The kayak shown in the video was 14ft long. This is definitely the best extender hitch hauler I have come across.

Great video! May I ask how much you spent (or if you made them) on the wheels? I have an almost identical kayak (mine's 12 feet yours looks to be 14) from hobie and I refuse to pay 200 for wheels haha. I didn't know if you bought them from amazon, etc or if you made them. Thanks!

Possibly. Depends on kayaks. You would need to extend side arms out and possibly flip them upside down to fit. We fit two Elie sound 120xe kayaks.

You could get a rack for your truck bed so one kayak sits above the one using the KayakDIY hitch hauler.  I have even seen people make a truck bed rack out of PVC.  A friend I know built one like the one shown in link below.

Hi, It looks like a well made system, but I have one word of warning. A driver behind you, especially at night, may or may not see the flag. Also, that driver's perspective with the kayak between your taillights may not realize the additional distance from the rear end of the kayak to your truck. I mention this, because many years ago, I was carrying my aluminum canoe like that in the back of my truck, and was stopped at a stop sign. I was rear ended by another car that even though my boat was flagged, he didn't see it, and crashed into me destroying the canoe. I would suggest a simple clip on taillight, to clip to the end of your kayak, and plug into your trailer hitch, trailer light receptacle. Easy to make with a large spring clip, some wire, a connector, and a trailer taillight. Happy yakking.

Hi Justin
I have a  Toyota Tundra Work edition 2014. I am about to buy a hitch. I have an Ocean Kayak Prowler 15 feet long and a Hobie Pro Angler 14.  Any suggestions. Will appreciate it
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 10 years ago
The TMS model on our site for $32.46 will work fine for that current kayak and truck.  However the one shown in the video is the Lund on our website.  The Lund is a bit higher quality & easier to adjust width/length settings.  Downside is it comes at a higher price point of $139.99.  It depends on how loaded your yak is also. I feel the Lund travels better with higher weight due to the unique sliding arm design.  Thanks for watching and sharing our videos.  Appreciate it.
Also, If you ever want to help produce future kayaking videos for our channel or website just send us a message.  Compensation can be arranged.  Enjoy!

Don't depend on the middle of the hull being wider, Make sure you always tie down the yak to the bed of the truck.
KayakDIY
KayakDIY - 9 years ago
Absolutely correct.  We just like the added safety measure of having the side supports.  On a long trip a strap could work loose or break.  This is one more measure to ensure your kayak doesn't go bouncing down the road.  Here are some for sale: http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&field-keywords=kayak%20hitch%20bed%20extender&linkCode=ur2&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Akayak%20hitch%20bed%20extender&tag=kayakco-20&url=search-alias%3Daps
