Great to see people giving advice about kayak fishing, but i agree with many comments on here, some dangerous advice in this video for newbies, safety should be the most important factor when teaching other people, the sea is dangerous and can the last thing you want is to promote bad practices. a lap full of paracord and pulling up the anchor side on to the tide is a recipe for disaster! sorry for negative feedback but you should do a updated video and remove this one.

Good vieo thanks
Looks like your an ocean yaker.

I'd suggest a stick with a flag on the anchor bouy.
When your in big waves those surface floats can be hard to fine.
(Do what the lobstermen do - they have way more experience at losing stuff)

Does this work: toss the anchor line off to the opposite side of the boat as you heave the anchor.
That way the line drifts behind you and doesn't get kinked to begin with.

I want to see a video with your anchor hung up and you breaking that zip-tie without pulling your self in or going over when it snaps. I anchor a 19' jon boat on the Mississippi river and don't use any chain. That much added weight in the kayak is dangerous

Cheers for that, great information. Just one question when anchored would you recommend having a clip-on safety line attached from yourself to the kayak. The reason I'm asking is I would worry that once anchored up and I fell off the kayak I would be carried by the tide whilst the kayak stays where it is. Whereas when drift fishing falling off is not such an issue as you will drift with the kayak before being able to get back on.

Cheers for the reply, so I guess don't anchor in a fast tide flow.

Personally I wouldn't attach myself to the kayak as it could cause you a world of trouble if you get caught up in the lines. I know you can carry a safety knife but that safety line could potentially be doing the opposite if you fall in.

Greetings from Australia. Give or take a few minor details, this is how I used to anchor. However, after having to cut off a jammed anchor assembly ( the chain itself was wedged in the reef) I modified my design a bit, courtesy of YouTube yakker, Zoffinger. Instead of chain, I now use a 10 inch piece of concrete reo bar cable tied to the short section of thicker rope attached to the anchor. This way, if the steel bar becomes wedged, hopefully, the rope can detach with the cable ties. 10 inches seems to be adequate weight to hold the anchor head down without being too cumbersome. Mind you, I lost that anchor in some really rough terrain with wind, current and swell moving me about in all directions, so it is possible that any anchor method was doomed.

Your pad-eyes are too high - Trolley lines shouldn't be up across your decks. Your cable tie to the anchor tail is far to thick - The strain you'll put on that to break it, when it goes (if it goes before the dive line) you'll dump arse-backwards into the drink. You've got no thicker line from the dive reel to the chain, which you need several feet of about 6mm paracord or similar so the line doesn't abrade through on the rocks. You need three to four times your depth of line out in tidal waters, and you should NEVER retrieve an anchor at midships in a tide - Newbies watching this video are going to get hurt if they follow it, seriously.

Good points.
Question: Can you run the anchor line through the carabiner on the trolly and then run that up to the bow then heave the anchor through the carabiner which will keep you pointed in the right direction while you remain in your seat?

Op-757

I agree with Custador. With such a high anchor trolly, it will go up and over your deck, which might cause wear and tear to your kayak and your rope

The Yakler Good for you - So have I, since I was about 10 years old. That you personally have never had an issue is all well and good, but you're still rocking a setup and a procedure that is bloody dangerous - Particularly how you haul up the anchor amidships. You even point out in your own video that you've pulled parallel to the swell. If you capsize doing that your line will tie you to your own hull! What you as an experienced kayaker can get away with does not equate to what a newbie can safely do. Same as driving a car, a seventeen year old needs to follow the drills right to stay safe, where you and I probably have all sorts of bad driving habits we get away with.
The Yakler
The Yakler - 7 years ago
Custador please make a video of the correct procedures and drills and post it in the comments below. I've been kayaking all over the UK in strong tides and never had an issue in the last 5 years. The 100 or so other kayak anglers around the Solent of which many have done it the same way also don't have an issue. If it bothers you that much please teach others your way by making a video. When I started kayak fishing all I had was people like yourself preaching advice and quite frankly were very unhelpful to be honest. I started making videos and giving advice on my website to help others that are new to the sport and not put them off. I understand this is a passionate topic for you so please teach others your way because I get a lot of feedback from people I've helped get into the sport and they have praised me for helping them out.

Please do not attempt to retrieve your anchor in tide like this display. It is in my opinion, very dangerous and likely to tip you out. Shuffle the trolley from the rear, grab your reel and set it to free spool then continue to shuffle the anchor warp to the bow. cleat off your anchor trolley to stop it moving then retrieve your anchor whilst in the most stable position, into rather than broadsides to the tide which is asking for trouble.I Kayak and anchor in the Bristol Channel with its high tidal range. To do so like in this footage would be suicidal

russ jones, I followed Yaklers method approx a mile of Stout point Bristol Channel. The kayak capsized, I managed to get back on and paddle to safety. This method is dangerous in the fast currents of the Bristol Channel.

Custador never had an issue but understand what you mean with the strong tides. If you have a video explaining it your way feel free to post the link in the comments.

The Yakler If you retrieve at midships you're pulling yourself parallel to the tide and swell, which is absolute madness and a great way to get wet. In a big tide, it's a pretty decent way to get drowned.

instead of attaching to the trolley you should anchor to the kayak after passing through the loop. I saw someone who had theirs tied to a ring have a boat wrap their anchor line and pull them against the swim platform of the boat wedging them onto the platform. they tried to cut the line but couldn't get their hand between the platform and the kayak... if it was tied inside the kayak, he could have cut it?

Hello mate, great videos keep them coming! just getting into fishing from a kayak and have purchased nearly all the components for the trolley and anchor system! I've watched several videos on this now and some people use a cleat to secure the trolley to prevent it moving, I noticed some people do this and some don't! Is this down to preference or ?? I personally wouldn't think there would be a need for it as the tidal flow would keep you in the same direction?! Thanks in advance!!

is it safe too use a front and back amchor? at the same time?
The Yakler
The Yakler - 8 years ago
I don't see why you would need both because your kayak anchor will naturally stop you from drifting in the direction of the wind and tide. I personally wouldn't want to paddle with two anchor setups on the kayak against strong wind and tide.

I don't see how you can quickly disconnect your anchor using that system. What happens if you have 5 seconds to drop that anchor? It looks like you would have to cut your anchor trolley line with a knife.
Lee Mychajluk
Lee Mychajluk - 7 years ago
Don't feed the line through the ring in the trolley 'one way'. You let the line out from your real, then pull a loop of line through the ring and around a cleat, adjust the trolley to where you want it, and then tie off on the cleat. In this manner, both the reel and the anchor are on the same side of the cleat, so you can untie from the cleat and throw the reel overboard (hopefully w/ a float on it) if you need to disconnect quickly.
The Yakler
The Yakler - 8 years ago
It takes no time at all to pull your anchor trolley to the side of your kayak and disconnect. Some kayak anglers have the anchor reel on the kayak with the line fed through a loop in the anchor trolley and connected to the anchor itself on the other end. The only way to disconnect from that quickly is to cut the line and loose the anchor.

Nice vid.  I can tell you put a lot of thought and work into it.   The anchor  system seems a bit complicated for a kayak.  Of course, I am an inland feshwater kayaker in the Midwest USA, and not an ocean kayaker like yourself.  We do have high seas in the Great Lakes, but if it is really high seas, I want to get off the water rather than anchor. These days, instead of a big heavy anchor that takes up space and can get snagged in the depths, I bring and empty bag and fill it with rocks or sand from the beach when I arrive.  I use that as an anchor.  It holds well and even if there is a little drift, who cares?  I am only kayaking, not yachting.  I just toss it overboard with some thick line.  I like a little thicker line simply because it has less tendency to get knotted up as thinner twine tends to do.

+The Yakler Well, and there is the perfect response; tidal flows.  In the Great Lakes in the USA/Canada we get big waves, but we don't have enough of a tide to be concerned about.  Of course, in England you could be swept out to sea by the tides and that would not be fun.  Tell me, what is the fascination of kayak fishing in the ocean?  Big ocean, tiny boat.  Why don't folks just get a proper boat, even a row-boat?  I love canoeing and kayaking, but I don't quit understand the fascination of putting a bunch of equipment on a tiny kayak and heading out to sea.  A lot of times the kayaks are less than 12 feet in length.  My kayak is nearly 20' and I wouldn't want to fish in it.  I know it is immensely popular today so I must be missing something.
The Yakler
The Yakler - 8 years ago
Cheers yea I sometimes use other forms of anchors such as onion sacks full of stones. It depends on the ground I'm fishing. I just wanted to provide a video for guys fishing around the UK as we have really strong tidal flow and anchoring can be an issue for new kayak anglers.

Great vid. I have a question though. I bought an anchor kit which comes with everything you need. However in the instructions, it says to put the rings 18" from the end of the yak, but you've got yours much closer to the ends. Any thoughts? When I was attaching it, my initial thought was to do it as you've done, but I then caved and followed the guide! What's best?

To be honest I've put mine towards the end to stop my kayak angling off in the tide so i'm as straight as possible. It doesn't make to much of a difference though and to best honest it's probably better the way you have done it. If you get any twists it will be easier to reach back where as I've had twists in the anchor trolley and had to come back to shore to fix them because I couldn't reach.
