Thank you so much for this video! I just bought a kayak & have been trying to figure a way to actually get it onto my car w/o damaging my car, kayak, or myself! I'm 5' and weigh 85 lbs so needless to say, I certainly don't have much upper body strength! Once again, thank you!!

What is important is that you got it done, no matter how difficult. It'd be nice to have help, but it's always best to know for sure you can handle something yourself. that = independence and self reliance. The good news for you is that your car roof is not esp. high as many suv roofs are.

Great job, even though I probably would do it from behind my CR-V and slide the kayak from above the trunk because, that way, I would probably have an easier time and inflict possibly less dents on my car.

YOU DO REALIZE THAT WHAT YOU HAVE ON YOUR CAR IS A "ONE MAN KAYAK LOADER"??!! Take your kayak to the back of your car. Put that blue mat on the trunk and backside of your car. Lean your kayak on the trunk (nose up), lift the keell (back of boat), the nose of your boat will be on the wheels on your rack and you just roll the kayak on. Just make sure your wheels are unlocked! That's what those wheels are SPECIFICALLY made for.... ONE MAN LOADING!!
ThePauljohnc
ThePauljohnc - 8 years ago
This is a great idea, but it looks fairly unstable. Your saddles have rollers on the back half specifically designed for loading.

I am sorry, the 3 option is to get a friend that helps you, but the wheels on the car and pushing is hilarious.
M M
M M - 8 years ago
This is the reason why you buy an inflatable or a big car/truck. If you think putting wheels on the hood of your car and pushing the yak up will work every time, good luck.
The kayak will fall and it will f#$ck up your car.
This is another idea on how to dent, scratch your car and end up in a body shop.

Interesting approach! I never thought of a front approach and using that cart upside down is genius. Those long kayaks are 75 - 80 lbs with an awkward shape making difficult for me at 6"1' 220lbs. No one wants to scratch their car either. Congratulations! You are a very determined girl, a very admirable quality in a woman!

Free advice:Use MUCH LESS ARM and BACK, and MUCH MORE LEGS! Seriously. This is especially true at the end of the day when you are exhausted and your back is vulnerable to strain and the arms are rubber. Also, If you load from the rear of the vehicle like I do on my truck, you can simply raise the bow to catch the rear of the rack, walk back and grab the rear grab handle, and then (using your legs) slide the boat forward until it is ready to be pivoted on the rack and pushed the rest of the way. I have done this with a 300lb Laser.

Good job! I think you have the same Yakima Hully Rollers and Mako Saddles that I have. I have a full size van and gave up putting kayaks up there. 13'6" is max size that fits inside van.  I have a few tips for you. Although your system is working, the Hully Rollers should be the 1st contact with the kayak then Mako saddles. That's the design idea with that Yakima system. How much does that Hobie weigh?

So, I'm guessing when you get to where you're going to paddle, you have to bungee the wheelies and mat back on the car to offload. That's a lot of work, but you did it!
Jeremy Catches
Jeremy Catches - 10 years ago
Great video!  I think if you used straps to hold your wheelez down intead of bungie cords they wouldn't move around as much, and the straps probably could go all the way around your trunk lid. And if you do it from the trunk side you could incorporate the wheels on your nice rack. :)

Must suck to be a girl when it comes to lifting stuff. All that extra work!

All I have to do is grab my kayak and put that fucker up there. But I understand it's not really the weight issue, mine is about 80pounds. The problems arise from the long length and displacement of the weight.

Great video and good job!

another way to do it is to get an extender (can be a stick, thin pvc pipe) and put it in one of the side holes of thule bars and then rest the kayak on it while you push it up onto the kayak carriers. Just too much work to use the wheeleez carrier.
david aronowitz
david aronowitz - 11 years ago
use a rope.. use your bars as a pulley and just pull the kayak up from the side. 100 times easier than worrying about the kayak sliding backwards banging up your rudder too.

Pity there's so many comments from 13 year-olds trying to hit on you. The reason she loaded from the front, with the help of a roller, is because she can do it at a gentle angle, hence less upper body strength required. If she did it from the back, she'd need to lift at a steeper angle and there's a good chance she'd be scraping the back of her car. It's all about working smarter not harder.

@jeepmanmike Going to have to agree here. You already have the tools for the job. Why aren't you using them ? You could even reverse the car into the drive and use the dip in the gutter to make the roof lower and easier to get the yak on to. I applaud your ingenuity but I think you're making it harder than it needs to be. Plus when you were trying to move the yak on the wheels you all but had it supported on your own. Personally I think you have the strength just to lift it up.

i get a set of racks that stick out on the ends or atach some wood to the set you have you can go to the dollerstore get 2 pool noodel things then slit them so you can cover the roof racks tape or better zipties hold it in place when lodding your kayak just bring the bow or stern to the roof rack that sticks out rest the end of the boat on it the go to the other end and push the boat up on the racks its a low cost cheep to replace, fix and avoid rack theft

Impressive, where there is a will, there is a way. Honestly though, it would be much less hassle to just get a little bit stronger.

Very good idea!! However you may want to place a washrag between your hood and the bungee hooks to keep them from scratching. And for those who feel the need to put down everyone, GROW UP!!! Here is a small figured girl loading an akward sized kayak ontop of her car by herself!!! Its not always the weight of the object, its the size that makes it difficult. I have a 10' kayak that only weighs 44lbs and its sometimes tricky to load by myself, other than that I can carry it one handed!!

That palm tree is AWESOME!!! What planting zone are you in? Also... Good idea with the Wheeleez. I usually just do a lot of grunting as I'm struggling. lol.

good on you for uploading your video, its good to see your thinking about your back, and not straining it by lifting your kayak without the help of your neat invention. keep up the good work.

AHHH honey, you have hully rollers on the back and the distance you lifted it onto the front was the same as the back, why all the extra junk on the hood?

Good job and idea because your kayak seems very heavy. Some do it from the back size of the car with a simple carpet on it and they slide up or down the K. Let you see my sistem at my car garage. Gruuz

Great job! Looks really heavy. You are using good common sense. Have to love the new carbon ones, but hate the price. Be safe!

Great video. I love that you've figured out just what a person needs to do this. Everything is pretty much household equipment, with the exception of the Wheelez. Thanks!

Thank you so much for posting this video. I am a small girl and I've always had to depend on my big strong boyfriend to put my kayak on my miata. Now I can dump that bastard and do it myself.
