How to rig a fishing kayak - Totally Awesome Fishing Show

This video shows you in detail how to rig a kayak for fishing. Kayak fishing is definitely on the increase, so Graeme and Mike travel down to Bristol to check out a fisherman who really has gone the full way, and "pimped his yak!". Ian Harris has a good number of different species from his kayak, and is pleased to pass on his tips about how he fitted his out. Kayaks can be used in freshwater or sea fishing and you can rig them out with all the latest Lowrance fish-finding equipment, handheld radios, cameras and everything but the kitchen sink! of course all you need to catch a fish is a rod and reel, but half the fun of kayak fishing is knowing you carry everything that a larger fishing boat might have. Yes, this guy knows his stuff. But I would have to take a mortgage out to even afford some of the gear!!!
If this is the guy, I believe he may belong to UK hobie kayak fishing team? Not sure, if so you can understand why he is promoting this product because he is getting it for nothing!!! Take a look on hobie kayak UK web site and have a look at the middle man and see what you think.

Nicely presented information. Gave a nice but long list of options/add-on's and the use of each. Nice part for kayaking is cheaper than regular boat, less room to store it, and can walk it to waters edge to fish a body of water.

Your viewers should be aware of the inherent dangers associated with anchoring a kayak. The risk is if you fall overboard your body will quickly be pushed away from the stationary anchored kayak by any tidal flow. Therefore for your own safety grab the kayak as quick as you can, because it can be impossible to swim against the tide flow (especially when wearing a dry suit and a PFD) That's why the VHF radio should be attached to yourself and not the kayak!

Very good informative video, but i'm afraid this is just TOO much for me.

When you have that much technology and gadgetry installed, is it really kayaking anymore?  You should have bought a bloody yacht instead man!

I'm gonna stick to taking a bucket, a pair of boardies, and a mini rod out with me. Thanks for the tips though. All the best  :)

I went out on my kayak with a couple of fishing rods earlier this summer (2014) around Hurst Spit into the Solent. It surprised me in how unready I was for all the new factors that come into play. This very experienced chap makes it look easy, but I found it a real test of all senses, balance, orientation and concentration.
You have to watch what you're doing and not drift off into shipping lanes or into rough water, and you have to be a lot more careful to balance properly, especially if a big fish jumps on your bait! Can you imagine falling out of the kayak and being towed along by a four foot tope, wondering whether to let go of your rod or not?

I found that for me one rod was plenty, and you need everything to hand to reduce the chance of departing your kayak by surprise. He's so right about having everything on a leash, and to be prepared for all eventualities.
My advice is to practice inland first, on a fairly still, shallow lake. Take a few hours at least to get used to fishing inland before you even think about going out into the sea, even quiet harbours and the like. It really is not as easy as you'd think. Then when you do first go out try perhaps just fishing one small rod for mackerel, or maybe bream.

My recommendation is to have one entire beach fishing session stood on one leg in the same spot without moving, bending over to access bait, rods, refreshment and tackle.
Once you're very well used to your kayak, including getting back on it after falling off, then it's time to try it on a lake for a while.

Having said all that, it must be a great thrill once you're familiar with everything.

Great Kayak set up but way too much kit onboard for me, if this guy keeps fitting more stuff to his yak he may aswell buy a small cabin/day boat. I would have the fish finder, rod holders, small tackle bag and some sarnies and a bottle of water, thats good enough to keep me out for a days fishing....oh yeah and a paddle!!

Yes, true. I grew up in the Alaskan outback.  Folks have a warped perception of firepower. You would be amazed at what one well placed shot can do ...  from experience, not troll internet conjecture. When it comes down to it now, though, I stalk wildlife with a camera. :) The gun is like life insurance ... better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Wildairsoft1 doesn't have a clue. :) Aside from growing up in Alaska, I served in the middle east and the Falklands in the 80's. Being an internet troll doesn't count as experience.

You can stop a bear with a 22 ... if you can't hit your target properly, a howitzer wont help. People just don't understand ballistics. Oh, and who said anything about a 9mm? LOL Glock make a lot more than 9s ... I grew up in the Alaskan bush ... don't be a troll ... a 9mm can stop a bear, but it certainly is NOT the ideal bear stopper.

I have to ask TA Fishing whether Hobie or Lowrance had any influence for promotional purposes in the making of this video or if this video is a totally independent video designed to educate kayak users in the setting up of a kayak for fishing?
Kevin Ballard

John Dory Ian kayaks for the UK hobie kayak fishing team, this is why he has no clue about cost because he probably get's it for bugger all.
As for promotional purposes he used TAfishing to promote Hobie and maybe also Lowrance, TAfishing might not be in the know or get anything out of it, but he will !!!

We are not sponsored by anyone or any product. We fund this show completely ourselves. Mike is a school teacher and Graeme is retired, this show is run part-time and takes a hell of a lot of extra work. As you may have noticed it is not Graeme or Mike's kayak in this video but Ians. Graeme doesn't even have a kayak, he can't swim! As for Lowrance, we believe in their product as it has proved very reliable for us. Hope this answers your question.

It is good to see you covering kayak fishing, which is very popular.  However, the kayak shown here is the high end of the market at a cost of about £2000 plus the extras you need.  I would suggest that the large majority of kayak fisherman use kayaks that are more affordable within the £500-£1000 range such as Ocean Kayaks as just one example and kayaks you paddle rather than peddle.  Hobie kayaks will be unaffordable for the majority.
I also think it is worth noting that although the kayak fisherman you used in this video is obviously very experienced and knowledgeable I believe Hobie, the manufacturer of the kayak, sponsor him.  It would be good if you do continue with kayak fishing videos you choose an experienced kayak fisherman who is not tied to a manufacturer.
Apart from not representing the majority of kayak fisherman as regards the type and cost of kayak, this was a good video with lots of useful information.

It depends on what kayak you are looking to buy. There is a large range of different kayaks. If you treat them right they will last you years and years. Probably best to look up kayak fishing forums and websites to help you

Personally i love my inflatables boats. more room, much more stable, and fairly priced. But cool to see how people pimp up their kayaks.

How much kit is enough?  If one were to tip could he reenter the kayak quickly or would he be breaking off pole holders, racks, and a myriad of items?  At some point it becomes an effort to impress others rather than being practical.  I believe inkeeping it simle.

+Tracey Scherer I have homemade outriggers on mine and there are certain ponds I would just not go on without them. They've saved me from flipping a few times running up on stumps. Best mod I've made yet.

+Richard Thaxton not true, the kayakers r giving the companies reasons to keep creating new stuff because when we come up with our unique ideas from scratch the stores bite off and sell the shit out of the idea and other stores follow

+Richard Thaxton as much as he wants, and there are out riggers which keep u from tipping I have them on mine and they rock. and there is no such thing as too much to the person whom chooses to put all of it on his own yak, don't like it than don't follow simple as that. GREAT VIDEO!!

+Richard Thaxton That's why I am kind of hesitant to put too many mods ahead of the seat, like fish finders. Since they will probably get in the way a little.

You're right, to each his own.  I started out bringing along the kitchen sink but have since pared down my gear to what I think I'll need for the day. I found I didn't like trying to fish over under and around all the stickups so I started removing them one at a time until I was comfortable.  But everyone has a different comfort level.  Good luck.

+Richard Thaxton Exactly. I can bring my five rods and all my lure boxes if I want and could probably hook up a fish finder and GPS if I wanted. You can get all that stuff and you might use it all, I do sometimes bring everything. But at the same time I can have tons of fun just bringing my ultralight rod setup and a couple hooks and plastic worms. I caught my personal best doing just that. Just wanted to go out and chill on the water and almost decided to bring nothing...glad I didn't.

Like many other industries, the kayak/fishing industry wants to sell each of us as much gear as possible.  Their advertising campaigns are carefully designed to make kayakfisherman believe we "need" all that stuff and must have  it to have fun and be successful.  The more gear the better.  However, the truth is exactly the opposite, all of it is not necessary.  One can enjoy kayak fishing with much less gear through careful planning and by developing realistic expectations.

Tipping is an issue when you have that much gear. You can buy rod leashes so you don't lose your gear and tie down bags and crates. If you tip you will lose some things but you can minimize losing expensive items. But if you don't feel you need them then definitely don't add them. I've seen some people add outriggers in the back made form PVC and buoys that would pretty much eliminate that risk but again, how much do you want to add.

I had the best fishing Kayak in the country, a Hobie Adventure Island fully rigged with every conceivable extra, I sold it and replaced it with a brand new warrior but to be honest I curse the day I sold it!
