Another trick for preserving the seals on the dry wells is petroleum jelly. I learned this working at a body shop. It the rubber dries out a little and shrinks and the jelly rehydrates the rubber and swells it up again. The trick is to rub a little jelly on the rubber and close the lid so when it swells it reforms the seal under pressure. The body guys used that to fix the rubber on car and truck doors. It's cheap and it works.

What would you suggest for a 6'4" 240lb. Fisherman? Don't mind starting with the paddle but, it would be nice to upgrade to a trolling motor down the road. I would like to stay around 700 to 1,000 if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chad, I’m going to be purchasing my first ever kayak to fish from. I think I have narrowed my choices between either the Perception Pescador pro 12.0 and the pelican catch 120 NXT. What are your thoughts between those two yaks. Keep in mind I’m 6ft 300lbs so need a stable platform for a big boy to ride in. The pelican has a 25lb higher weight limit at 400lbs and I think is 2.5” wider. Going to be fishing rivers also so maneuvering will be important too. Any help on choosing one of these two would be much appreciated. Thanks

So this will sound really stupid. But on those HDPE boats, if you have one of those wax burner incense things at the house, those puddles of wax eventually lose their smell and we throw them away right? Well, I save them. That wax comes out of the burner in a little half round block and is perfect size shape and consistency for waxing a plastic boat hull. Just rub it in. It makes loading and unloading on top of a car a snap due to reduced friction, and reduced drag in the water, and if you have to drag on concrete, it allows a longer life span on both the cheap keels and the replaceable keels. Thank your wife for the best mod ever. Using this on my Sun Dolphin Pro boat, while putting it on top of my car, the first time i did this, I used enough force to get it up there like I normally did.....but it was so easy I shoved it clear off the other side of the car. Its cheap ( essentially free) and always more supply than demand, and not very time consuming. (We wax surfboard, why not kayaks?)

I have a small car, 2011 Toyota Carolla, so I would have to use a roof carrier. Would a roof carrier be suitable for an intermediate or advanced kayak? Also what about the weight; are there assists in getting the kayak up there (I'm sure I couldn't lift 50-60 lbs up there)? Also I've seen "frameworks" that you hold onto when standing can these be put on most kayaks? You can tell I'm a real newbie but I would like to get into kayak fishing. In fact I've never had a boat.

I started with a heritage 10’ and saved 3years and bought a wilderness 135 pedal. It was fast but I did have to buy rod holders and other stuff but it did not work good in salt water flats and oyster beds. I had to raise the prop and paddle, also the grass would get around the prop. I sold it and bought a hobie outback for what I sold it and did not have to upgrade or change anything with it. It is a great kayak in shallow salt water and in flats where there is a lot of grass. I have no regrets. I had as much in the wilderness money wise as what the hobie was but it the best when in water on lakes it was probably better suited for it but not in the shallow oyster beds or flats. I was glad I started with a paddle and learned with it first.

I’m thinking about buying a kayak and I was looking at the pelican catch 100 or the 120 and I was wondering what kayak would be an all around fishing kayak?for instance something I could go to a decent sized lake all the way down to a farm pond? I don’t have the storage or a garage to fit a pelican bass raider or a v hull boat although o would like to get a v hull boat and do the conversion to a bass boat! Any advice or tips or things to consider?

Thanks Jon. I don’t have a lot of experience in it, but I have paddled it. It’s really slow, but it is stable and definitely floats pretty shallow. If you get a good deal on one, you really can’t go wrong. It’s not the most user friendly for standing and sitting back down if that is important to you.

Strongly recommend that folks also consider the Feelfree Lure series. I had an ATAK 140, which was no slouch and a fishing machine, but for the money, and what you get (Gravity seat, wheel in the keel, solid handles, electronics pod, etc etc etc) they are DEFINITELY worth a look!

I did 2 weeks of research before I made my final choice: FeelFree Lure 11.5. The wheel in the keel, the seat and the future release of the overdrive sold me. Great standing kayak. I am coming from a very sedentary computer job with back issues but physical therapy has cured my ills. I really love my choice and it fits what I wanted. No one kayak fills the bill for everyone and I respect all kayak builders. Go to a local dealer and try your choices on a paddle day, I did and then made my purchase. Happy Fishing! Thanks Chad for your informative info.

I like this guy and all but u don’t need to spend a bunch of money to kayak and fish, I got a simple sit on kayak made adjustable outriggers for stability that double as rod holders and added a actual seat so I sit taller and can stand easier, I spent a total of 240 bucks and I fish with it multiple times a week, people go about this all wrong if ur not competitive I don’t get and can’t justify 600+ just for a kayak when I can spend 200 and do the same job

Great info I started with a Lifetime SOT 8' for about $200 and loved everything about kayak fishing except the painful back that had me suffering every night. I tried all kinds of pillows and seat modifications with no real success, so about 3 months ago I saved up a grand and got the Feel Free Lure 10 with the Gravity seat. I went thru this scenario years ago. Bought an Ocean Kayak fishing kayak. Bottom line, Do Not Buy a kayak under 12'...mine was 13'. The short ones track terrible! You'll constantly be making correction paddles if you go with a short one. Hobie, overpriced! I researched extensively before buying mine. Actually a shop was doing a demo days so I was lucky and got to paddle it before buying.

Maybe more expensive, but you could just get a standard boat keel guard. Depending on how much you want to spend you could cover more of the boat. Don't know how it effects performance. Pretty sure there are some Kayak/Canoe peel and stick keel guards as well. Just a quick search and one guy used gorilla tape.
