What kind of offshore kayak would you recommend if I want to take my son with me? We fish mostly in the bayous and lakes but occasionally in gulf. He is old enough to sit still but not old enough to really help row. What do you suggest would be the safest for him if we go out in the gulf?

I've had lots of yaks over the years and finally purchased a Hobie with the drive system if you are looking for a sit on top Hobie is the best kayak on the market hands down they allow you to fight a monster while maintaining you position

If you really want the ducks guts for fishing offshore, you should check out these South African fibreglass or carbon sit on tops. The Stealth Pro Fisha 575, Stealth Evolution 495, Kaskazi Dorado.

If you want the best fishing kayak ? Go look at the Malibu Stealth series. We have two. The Malibu S-14 and Stealth -9. Will be getting a S-12 soon. But do as I did and go to Bass Pro and compare the Ocean Kayak to the Malibu's and you will see theirs no choice to be made !! You will leave with a Malibu. I will put a couple of Video on here soon to help !!!

HI i went to a lake last summer in Canada on my vacation and got hooked to the experience. I live in Lebanon and i am searching for a fun kayak to use on the Mediterranean Sea for some various activity rowing around, taking pictures and some light fishing. i did visit some stores tp purchase some kayaks but they where a bit expensive nothing below 1k, in the brochure ii saw a Cobra Explorer and navigator xf is that kinda kayak good for me or not and what do you recommend to a novice, below 800

@iamnotatroll1 Ideally... go with the Ocean Kayak Torque, which has a built in Minn Kota motor. This will let you maintain your position in the current without paddling, so that you can focus on fishing. You can also use the Ocean Kayak Trident, and anchor of the stern to hold your position in the current. Just be careful when anchoring in current. We posted a video not long ago about the challenges of doing so. Check it out.

@outdoors52 Rather than looking for a new fishing kayak under $600, I would look for a second hand kayak. You can get a really good second hand kayak for that price. I would try posting that question on the Kayak Bass Fishing website forum.

@gamergrounds Try the Ocean Kayak Trident 13, or the Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game. The Big Game is probably the better one for you. It won't win any awards for speed, but the wide platform will make it super stable and you'll even be able to comfortably stand and fish from it.

The drawback to a sit-on-top kayak, is if you flip, your fishing tackle will end up at the bottom of the lake.... The drawback to a sit-in kayak is it is difficult to maneuver, and there is very limited space to carry your gear. I would pick a sit-on-top kayak that has a back hatch large enough you can store your tackle box inside, and purchase knee straps, if you are planning on fishing in the ocean in a SOT, to give you more stability when ocean launching which is when most people flip.

@neighborator A prowler 11' or 13' would be great for your wife. The 15' would be good for you, although if you loaded it with camp gear (food and water) you'd have a very full load. Check out the Ocean Kayak Big Game Angler. It's wider than the Prowler 15', which will make it more stable for you. The trade off is that it's a little slower than the Prowler.

My wife and I are new to kayaking and are looking into a couple sit-on-tops. We will primarily be using them for fishing, touring and some camping on large choppy lakes. Now my question is what kayak would a good choice for us? I’m 6’2”, 305 lbs and my wife is 5’3”, 125 lbs. I thought maybe a 15’ Prowler for me (Would I take in too much water?) and a 13’ Prowler for her. Any advice would be appreciated.

@markrufino Wrong, Hobbies have a bow that gets under water. I wouldnt get in rough seas in such a vessel. So far the folding french Nautiraid seems the best, but folbot GII and such are good too.

@superCam25 You can't go wrong with either. It's more a matter of how you'll use it. If you tend to paddle long distances, the speed and tracking of the 15 is nice. With that said, the 13 is still pretty fast and tracks well. We use the 13 more because it's lighter and easier to transport... and we're moving around, unloading, loading, etc, a lot each day.
