Build a sail Easy project Simple and cheap way to get sailing with your canoe or kayak or Dingy. Check out the video of us sailing it in the link at the end of this video. Parts needed..one 5 x 8 ripstop tarp...15 feet of 1 inch pvc schedule 40... strong glue..2 1/2 feet of 1 1/2 inch and a half pvc schedule 40... roll of parachute cord...4 eye screws...one 1 inch elbow (90)... one section of 2 x 3 board....12 inches of old 2 x 4 ... small piece 8 inches long of 2 x 6... 4- 3 and a half inch screws...some fiberglass resin and hardner... some fiberglass matting ...a tomatoe steak or fiberglass rod to roll up in the bottom seam of the sail and glue in tightly... a drill..a saw... a 1 1/2 inch hole saw hammer.. screwdrivers.. Why paddle or motor around when you could sail? It's free it's quiet and its a lot of fun too. As it is the canoe sails slightly upwind with out a centerboard-I did move the sail up in front of the front seat to get better up wind performance. It sails on a beam reach well and goes down wind good.
I normaly sail down wind then use the trolling motor to get back. Sometimes I will add speed by paddling with the sail at the same time. you will easy out run any kayak or canoe under paddle power alone
