Huge Flathead Catfish Came Back for More

Be sure to check out my website http://www.kayakcatfish.com This is footage from an awesome day of kayak catfishing. I was drifting on the Tennessee River with cut skipjack suspended. It had been a pretty slow day and I missed two big fish. My luck changed when I hooked into a monster flathead. It was a fun fight and a heck of a battle in the kayak. I use circle hooks. Before making a comment about how I need to set a hook, please take some time to educate yourself on how they work if you are unfamiliar with them. Also, there are children who watch my channel. Please refrain from using profanity. Any rude or vulgar comments will be deleted and the person who made it will be blocked.

I have used circle hooks and traditional hooks.. and it's is very easy to pull that bait right out with a circle hook but I still prefer traditional hooks
Texan1048
Texan1048 - 6 years ago
I still give circle hooks a firm upsweep. Circle hooks don't always self-set, I've lost plenty from just reeling, taking in slack, or lifting the rod up. Sometimes they just don't have it deep enough to self set. So I always give it a sort of "half set" just to be sure. Has improved my hook-up ratio, especially on finicky, hook aware fish.

Awesome vid though! I've always wanted to try kayak fishing, looks like an absolute blast! And you have four rods on that thing, that's cool!

Love love love circle hooks. Grew up fishing them in Florida. Cast out and " let it ride Clyde ". Use your reel to set and pull up from " 10oclk to 2oclk. Work like a charm in the side of the mouth. No gut hook. Easy retrieval. Just remember to keep good tension.

Linda Thibodeaux you can eat them but catfish bioaccumulate toxins, so it is better to eat smaller fish 3lbs or less. Let the big ones go so they can make lots of babies

Never had much luck with circle hooks myself.  though im not very patient when the biting starts.  Im crawling out of my skin to set the hook.  Probably why I don't catch many fish lol.  Great video and awesome fishin.

a LOT of people would have NO idea about the circle hook "setting" dynamic
one has to be about to "picture" physics here.

The first couple of fish you caught, you said were small. I was a little skeptical. I have never caught huge fish of any kind, much less cats. My biggest was a blue about the size of the one you had on the line when you caught Fishzilla ( I love to fish, but don't get a lot of time to go do it.). When you hauled up Fishzilla, it clicked in my head why you called those others small. Of course, it's best to release those leviathans. You can eat them I guess if that was intended from the start but wouldn't really want to. Too fatty. Anyway, about releasing fish... I wish more people would see it the way you do. It's best for the population of the species, but also for the ecosystems they inhabit. I'm not going to give a dissertation as to why. I'm sure most people with common sense would understand. I think a lot of people need to be educated about this anyway, and how to get fish off the hook without mortally wounding them or simply cutting the line. I have seen lot's of fish killed or injured in this way. It always makes me crazy when I happen upon big wads of fish line, empty bait containers, dead fish and other destructive evidence that some folks don't seem to give a rip about the animals or their habitat. I see a lot of people watch your videos. It looks like a good way to sell gear too. ( Amazon?) Maybe you could make a video educating folks on how to use the equipment properly and help those less experienced to be less likely to create hazards to the fish, the environment and even other folks, and their gear. I don't know how much time I have wasted after hooking into someone else's snagged and tangled messes. I have ruined yards of line, reels and even snapped poles because folks don't have the patience or knowledge required to get themselves out of jams. Just a thought. Cool video! Thanks for sharing it!

I would think that a sinker that large next to the hook would interfere in hookups at least part of the time. Do you have many break offs? Thanks for keeping us entertained, you do good work.
Kayak Catfish

Thanks Joe! I never have any breakoffs. I have since added a couple beads above the hook to create a little more space between the sinker and hook.

Enjoyed the video. I fish for flatheads completely different than you, but I will say your circle hook patience is interesting. When I do throw from shore for them and use cutbait or live bait, the second the run starts that pole is picked up. You wait a looooong time. May be the yak coming into play. 80% of the time I'm actually throwing bucktail jigs for them with big curly tails into really fast rushing water with a heavy bass set up. Nothing like pulling in 30-40 pound flatheads on a 7'1" to 7'4" rod and a low pro baitcaster. I laughed at my cousin this summer as we were fishing for smallies and he hooked into a "snag" in the river with a very small squarebill on. About 25 minutes later the snag was in ... 39.43 pound flattie. PS - Take that glove off! Hahaha.

Cat fish get REALLY REALLY big also can i get some tips on how to catch them we have a private property pond and they have catfish in there but i guess its because we dont have the right bait!?!
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
I would recommend using bait that is native to the pond. Fish the deeper part of the pond or where the creek or spring feeds into it.

Just found your channel. Great catch!! But my advice is use a bit bigger hook with that monster bait. Like you said with the circle hooks you don't yank hard on the set but with the smaller cirle hooks it's easier to rip it out of their mouth. Great fishing though, I'd be happy with that slob!

Very good video and very nice fish. Just a little advice when you’re cat fishing leave the rod in the rod holder and really about as fast as you can a good five times to make sure that fish it firmly hooked. When you’re drifting and dragging baits they’ll usually hook themselves. But good video. Keep up the good work

Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
Thank you for checking out my channel! The stability of a kayak will vary depending on the brand and model. The best way to test stability is to go to a demo day at a local dealer so you can try out several different models and see which works best for your needs. There are many kayaks on the market today that are extremely stable. It is still possible to flip any kayak but a lot of the bigger/wider models would take a lot of effort to do so.

Because I love to catch big fish. You can’t catch 50lbers if you kill all the 20 and 30lbers. It takes many years to grow a fish to trophy size. If you want a meal, take a few small ones. Let the big ones go to be caught again when they are even bigger.

I live in Georgia on the Flint River right in the middle... We should take two buckets of rotten wheat and pour it in a hole the deepest hole we could find, in 20 to 30 minutes the carp would start splashing hitting the water the Tails were so big they look like mermaid tails as far as you could see down the river... The bait was biscuit dough rolled and balls with vanilla extract in a ziplock bag overnight... They would barely nibble on it then when they took it all hell broke loose... They would go straight down the river to the biggest pile of trash they can find... If you were looking for a 20-pound carp you better have 50 pound test line. Very easy to pull their lips off I have pulled up scales as big as silver dollars powerful strong fish.

the most terrifying thing about this to me outside of fishing in a kayak is what if four fish like that bit all at once? I mean i would love the attempt to catch em all but then again saying i lost my boat because i had to much good luck does not sound fun.

Any big river in america should have em....ohio river, tennessee, mississippi, river..big circle hooks, big chunks of SKIPJACK HERRING and live MOONEYES are snacks for these fish. They will eat ANY thing alive that swims in front of it, and will crunch crankbaits, swimbaits, fluke tail minnows, shad jigs of any shape, spinners, and jigging spoons...live baitfish is your best bet. SPRING and FALL is best, mid summer it tricky with the spawn.

When we fished for big blues on the Cumberland River near the steam plant on a bass boat, we would set the hook with a full body whip of the rod, 180°. Biggest we caught was a 65 lb blue.

If I tried a hookset like that in the kayak, I would end up in the water very fast lol. I use circle hooks. The fish hook themselves when they go to swim off.

Awesome fish! Was wondering if you have a reason for not setting the hook better and if you think that has anything to do with loosing two of them?
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
I use circle hooks. If you set them like a traditional hook, you will pull them out of the fish’s mouth every time. The hook needs time to turn and catch in the corner of their mouth. It’s best to either reel down or let the fish hook itself.

Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
Thank you for watching and for the nice comment! The 4.4 ah Nocqua battery has worked well for my graph. Keep in mind I have a small, black and white Lowrance Mark 4 unit on my Hobie. I get about 10 hours of run time for that unit on the 4.4 ah battery. If you are running a bigger graph or are planning to power multiple devices, I would recommend going with the 10ah battery. I just purchased a new graph last month and upgraded to the 10ah battery for that reason.

I'm don't really know much about rushing and what baits to use for certain fish, I usually fish in small creeks with just worms for catfish that seem like babies compared to these lol, but whats a good bait for catfish? And how much do one of those poles usually cost?
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
I would recommend using whatever bait fish are native to the waters you fish. Just cut them into chunks to use for bait. As for the rods, I use ugly stik catfish Series rods. They are around $30.

Craig Rock
Craig Rock - 6 years ago
Awesome fish! Hey your the master but one thing I noticed is not much for a hookset. More just start reeling it in. Is that the way it's done with those bad boys? So it doesn't pull the bait out and hook? Just curious. Other species you see big power hookset to sink that hook in. I'm thinking this might help with catch and release..just hoping the bait stays in the gut while reeling it in?
Craig Rock
Craig Rock - 6 years ago
Kayak Catfish Thank you for that. I was sincerely curious. That makes total sense. I fish mostly walleyes up here in Mn. I love seeing these videos of Cats. Thanks for replying and good luck.
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
I use circle hooks. Circle hooks almost always get the fish in the corner of the mouth which decreases gut hooks and lowers the mortality rate. When using them, the fish will hook themselves when they swim with the bait. If you try to “set” them like with traditional hooks, you will miss every fish.

So love the C&R.
I grew up on the upper Mississippi. I was real young back in early 70's and would try to snag cats that were 5 to 6 feet long, they'd come up to sun themselves in the damn overflows and I never did catch one. I guess they were 200lb to 300lb fish. Met an oltimer years later and got to talking about them days. He said he and his buddies fished out the area sad enough. Used to use the winch on their trucks to get em out of the water.

Man you need to get rid of those boots when fishing in a kayak. If for whatever reason you go over with those boots you are done. The water pressure pushes those boots against your feet and shins while they fill with water and turn into water weights. I guess the saving grace is the life vest, but I would recommend a pair of shitty shoes with waterproof socks.

Kayak Catfish thanks for getting back to me so soon . I’m gonna actually getting ready to go to a small pond and catch small perch/sunfish for later . While I got ya here , do you cut your bait up and then put it in the freezer or do you put in in whole? Do you add water to your bag you put your bait in ? Sorry for all the questions
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
Thank you for watching and subscribing! That old town predator is a great kayak. I'm sure you have a lot of fun in it. I actually use frozen bait more often than fresh. I stock my freezer when bait is easy to get and use it throughout the year.

Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
I use circle hooks. If you set the hook, it will pull it right out of the fish's mouth. Those hooks turn and set themselves when the fish swim off with your bait. Using circle hooks greatly reduces the mortality rate because you almost never gut hook a fish.

What's the scents in fishing if u don't keep what u catch ??
Kayak Catfish
Kayak Catfish - 6 years ago
It takes many many years to grow a fish that size. They aren't easily replaceable. I enjoy catching them so it is in my best interest to release them and encourage others to do the same so we can sustain good populations of trophy size fish. Letting them go allows them to live to be caught again and to pass on their genes to future generations of fish.

Let them eat the bait longer. I notice when you take the rod out of the holder you lift rod way up and then you give the fish slack. Remove rod from holder and just reel. Try bigger hooks because you have some hawgs in that river. My 10 cents. Thanks for the vid.
zeke thefishgeek
zeke thefishgeek - 6 years ago
Ed Kennedy-> I agree...Weight first then a hook on a relatively short leader. I've seen flat heads in my aquarium hold food in their mouth for upwards of 15 to 20 minutes before deciding to swallow it especially if it has been fed a fish that has dorsal or anal fin spines, like a sunfish does. They grab it quick... but it's like they try to stun it, but they do not have a perfect mandibular (jaw) structure to be able to crush it adequately... they just suck it in rapidly, swallow it (especially if there are other Flatheads around them that the fish are aware of... their neighbors come fast wanting their food) fast, or they keep their mouth closed and don't allow it to breathe because the prey's gills are not functioning normally due to the pressure on them , while the flathead keeps his mouth closed to keep them from escaping and his tongue pushed up against the roof of his mouth and when it quits wiggling stunt it two or three more times as it goes back toward the flatheads pharyngeal teeth at the back of the mouth in the fish's throat up top. After The Fringe you'll tease kind of crunch it and push it into the fish's gut more or less it's all over but the digestion. A 10 lb Flathead can easily eat a 3 lb fish.
Need to use a BIG hook 7/0 to 9/0 is what I usually have on. Pylodictus olivaris have ginormous mouths... & so does Ictalurus furcatus... a 3lb. Catfish can get the whole bait with that big hook into it's mouth easily. SIZE UP...

Heffrey Howers
Heffrey Howers - 6 years ago
Jeff Cowan im sure you have seen a scale on your hook point occasionally after hooking baitfish through body...scale on hook point can go unnoticed. Also hook should ALWAYS be sharp enough to easily snag fingernail.
Heffrey Howers
Heffrey Howers - 6 years ago
Always keep a good hook sharpener, i like the flat side ( not groove), and i try for three sides of point to sharpen...circle hooks take a lil extra practice to sharpen and a lot of discipline and practice to fish with..i quit using them at first and so glad i gave them a second try. Whoever invented should easily win Nobel Peace Prize..saved countless fish a belly ache, or worse.

I caught a FAT 47" flattie, then a week later a 45" flattie on live creek chub back in August. Didnt have scales so I don't know what they weighed (they felt over 40lbs easy)...which is a bummer cuz my friend (who wasn't there to see em live or handle their fat asses) tried to say only 20lbs...yea, this the same guy who catches 2lb channels at best and says "I'd say he was 7lbs." But then for the month of September, I went to the dollar store and got cheap cans of sweet corn and caught 3 to 4 two foot carp each 2 hr outing!! For the few weeks I went carping, I caught 16 total carp the smallest being 4lbs while the biggest was 10.69lbs. Yea yea, I've caught em bigger than that before too, but damn they fight like raging bulls at any size...no regrets on the corn!!

That one was bigger than the last one for sure.My favorite catfish out of them all.Their so ugly till their handsome.Kinda remind,s me of a lot of my friend,s mother in laws with that huge mouth.ha.ha.Their the one catfish that doesn't play by the rule,s when fishing live bait laying flat on the bottom. Many time,s even when using a circle hook they will swallow the bait down deep in their gullet before they even run.I caught a big flathead back in the seventies down deep in it,s gut and put it in a big metal stocktank I kept live bait in, and in a few day,s it died and when I gutted it I found the hook went through it,s gut lining into it,s vital organs.I believe if one is down in the gut its best just to cut the line and turn him loose and hope for the best. Many time,s you will catch a huge cat that is blind in one of it,s eye,s and most of that im sure if it was traced back to the cause,it was done as a juvenile by a hook going up and through the back of it,s eye before it was released.Last year I fished a spot that about a week before I watched a you tuber catch and release a 50 pound blue in front of a dam. When I went up behind the dam there was a bunch of log,s jammed up in a pile, and there was a big blue floating dead in among the log,s,and when I looked at it close I could see a green line down in it,s throat. Many time,s ive watched their videos and when it,s hooked in the corner of the mouth they will show it and say,it worked the way it was designed to right in the corner of the mouth, but then many time,s on a flathead that,s gut hooked they wont show that part so you wont know it was really in the gut.If I was solely fishing on bottom for flatheads to release I would use a j hook style and let them run a little then set the hook to help eliminate gut hooking. Hope your out on the water soon, and feeling better.

+Jeff Morris Flatheads are my favorite fish to catch too. I wish I had the patience to target them regularly but I am always thankful for the few I get every year while fishing for blues. This one was a memorable battle for sure.

Scott, thank you for watching my videos and supporting my channel. You can stop watching Justin's now. You only agreed to watch them through October per our agreement. I mean if you've seen one of Justin's videos (Justin pulls catfish from river in kayak) you've seen them all. He just changes the titles. He doesn't make cool ass videos about bungee cords and breathable underwear, so why bother?

It sucks bad losing giant catfish! I fought one for about 10 minutes the other night until it got my line tangled around a pole and broke me off. Felt like he was atleast 35 pounds. It's a shitty feeling of frustration and disappointment.

So I live in a ski lake with many 5- 10 puns catfish, and I usually use bread as bait, and catch lots of 1 and 2 pounders, and an occasional bigger one. Any tips on how to target the bigger catfish? Baits? Rigs? Stuff like that?
