Where do you fish at on the Red River? I live right by Lindenwood and I go from Lindenwood to 52nd Avenue boat dock and have pretty good luck within that area
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 7 years ago
I haven't fished the Red much since I got my kayak but around ten years ago when I started to get back into fishing I fished it a lot from either the bank or my friends boat. We'd usually go south from the 52nd ave launch or head north of the airport from MB Johnson park. We had pretty good luck around Abercrombie too when the water was high enough to get his boat into a couple of the oxbows. I live about 6 blocks from the dike so I really should get my kayak out there again and target some cats.

Congrats on the new kayaks! I'm sure you guys will have a blast! Just be careful if it's your first trip out, the water can be pretty cold this time of year. I always bring a spare change of clothes in a dry bag when I go out during the winter months. I haven't needed them yet but it's good to have something along just in case I fall in.

Not hard at all. I'd recommend working your way upstream from the launch whenever possible, then you have the current helping on the way back.

NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
Yes, you can keep fish while kayak fishing. The most common ways are to use a stringer or some kind of cooler bag. The problem I run into is it's about 2 hours from the time I arrive back at the launch until I get home so in warm weather I don't keep fish. I could bring a cooler to transport them home in but I mostly fish for bass anyway so it's all catch and release.

There's only channel cats in the Red. We're a little north of the blue cat's range, especially the Red since it flows north into Lake Winnipeg. I used to bank fish around town a lot too before I got my kayak. I caught one that had to be around 25lbs just north of county road 20. There's some monsters in there, especially up north.

Thanks Jamera! I probably would have kept paddling past that first spot but as I passed that fallen tree I noticed a couple tails sticking out of the back side. It was about 3-4ft deep where that tree was sitting. I'm always surprised at how shallow I see catfish swimming around on this river though. They act a lot like the smallmouth bass, chasing minnows around shallow spots and along weed lines. I've caught them on just about every bass lure I've thrown there too.

Thanks! The Red flows north into Canada where Stu is from. There's some monster cats up there and even the northern part of the Red in ND has a lot of 20lb+ channel cats. The cats in this video look like they're actually fighting! I've never enjoyed catching cats because it feels like your just reeling in a rock with no fight, just weight! But maybe that's just characteristic of cats out of the Ottawa river?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
The cooler water temperature could definitely be a factor. The water is usually somewhat warm on this shallow stretch of river. I'm honestly kind of surprised the catfish swim up to these shallow spots from deeper water on a sunny day like this. I've seen them stacked up in a couple small bays as I paddle back after dark too. Kind of freaks me out sometimes when they don't move until I almost run into them! I've only caught a few on topwater, one smaller one I got on video. That one is here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsNsOtaW8ug
88waterdemon
88waterdemon - 8 years ago
+NDYakAngler My dad and I have caught some fat catfish out of the Ottawa but it was just like reeling in a load of salad, no fight. Maybe it's because the Ottawa river is colder?
I remember one evening, the sun was just setting below the horizon, and I witnessed a catfish run. This little bay off the Ottawa absolutely boiled with catfish. The sight, even just the sound of it was amazing!
I'd LOVE to see a video of cats caught on top water lures! That sounds like fun!
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
These catfish put up an awesome fight! They sometimes act a lot like bass on this river. I often see them chasing minnows along weed lines and have caught them on almost every bass lure I've thrown, even a couple topwater lures! It's definitely possible that they'll act a little different from one river to another. I haven't caught many catfish this size on any other rivers for comparison but I notice a big difference in the behavior of the smallmouth on a couple different rivers I fish.

NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
The ones in this video were bigger than what I like to keep, I prefer the smaller 2-3lb fish. I've seen people keep them around this size though and catfish are low in mercury so you don't have to worry about that but the smaller fish have a better taste and texture to the meat. Catfish are one of my favorite fish, throw the fillets on the grill with some Cajun seasoning and it's awesome!

Hey man, great videos! Do you find it hard to fish out of a kayak rather than in a john boat?
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 8 years ago
I've never fished out of an actual jon boat. I've spent lots of time fishing out of a paddle boat and small v-hull style aluminum boats and honestly I think fishing out of a kayak is easier other than maybe the paddling vs motoring to a spot. Sitting in a kayak your pretty much at water level so there's no leaning over the side to grab a fish and when I throw my lure into a tree its usually no problem getting in back. Plus its easier getting through shallow areas and I can sneak up closer to fish without spooking them. Lack of space is a downside but as long as you give a little thought to gear organization that's not much of a problem.

Thanks Jerry! I really like my hat cam, I've had a lot of great action happen just out of frame with my other rigs so its nice being able to shoot whatever I'm looking at. It's great for the days I want to pack light too, I'll bring a half dozen spare batteries for the Gopro and leave behind the heavy lead acid batteries I use to power the other camera rigs. The lapel mic I use with this rig seems to do pretty well in the wind too.

On the sheyenne? The water quality sucks here in West Fargo, and there are almost no fish here, especially of that size. Anyways, nice vid, liked the catfishing!

I have 2 questions. 1.) are you going to be buying the patriarch xt spinning reels or are you just going to keep yours that you already have, and 2.) I've seen in other videos that you keep just regular jigheads in your Smallie tackle box, and I was just curious what you use them for because I do not do a lot of smallmouth fishing and was just wondering! Thanks, and keep up the great vids!

I know you're a bass guy so I was wondering if you could share some of your go to lures or bait for largemouth bass in lakes, and also I was wondering techniques you use to catch bass in November when it's getting colder, thanks!
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 9 years ago
I have three lures that get used probably 90% of the time when I fish for largemouth. Early summer when the water is clear and the bass are post spawn and guarding fry I like a watermelon red flake senko wacky rigged. You can work it slow in the middle of the water column and really agitate fish into biting. Getting into July I'll start using a jig and most of the time I can catch them on that the rest of the year. I like a 3/8oz black/blue strike king tour grade swim jig with a 4" june bug kalins grub. I can fish it a variety of ways but usually hop it along the bottom working weed edges, rushes, and flooded timber. I like that particular jig because the swim jig head slides through just about anything and it has a somewhat thin guage hook so I can get a good hookset with light line. The third lure is a live target topwater frog, a must have in case the topwater bite is on! My tackle box I bring with to largemouth lakes also has a couple rat-l-traps, misc crankbaits, hula poppers, spinner baits, and jig colors but most of the time they stay in the tackle box.I haven't fished much for largemouth this late in the year. We usually only get a couple weeks in November before lakes start freezing so I've been mostly chasing smallmouth since I got my kayak. The weather will play a big part for both species, cold temperatures will have them deeper but a sunny afternoon or a day or two of warmer weather can bring them up shallow again. For smallies I look for the deepest rocks I can find off points and islands and work a jig, blade bait, jerk bait, or a rippin' rap along the bottom around those spots. Drop offs next to shallow areas where green weeds were still present were holding quite a few fish this week too. If the weather lets me get out a couple days this week I'll go try for some largemouth.

I just subscribed a few minutes ago, I'm a big fan of your videos and I'm somewhat your neighbor in the Midwest being as that I'm in Wisconsin. It's nice to be able to see the techniques used so that I may apply them as well. Tight lines
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 9 years ago
No problem! It wasn't that long ago that I got into kayaking and had a lot of the same questions I get asked now. There really aren't many places you can't go in a kayak! If I can't find a public launch I'll look for a bridge or a spot where the road runs close to the water to put in at. You'll have to check the rules for your state but in most cases here there's a right of way of 50ft from the edge of the road so if the water is within that distance and there aren't any no parking signs I can launch there.

+NDYakAngler I appreciate you taking the time to reply and help me out, tight line's!
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 9 years ago
Yes it's public. I don't think there is such thing as a private river, just private land once you hop out onto the bank. As long as you can find a spot to launch without trespassing on private property your good. I fish this stretch of river a lot and only saw one other boat all summer so it doesn't get much pressure. If your getting a kayak next year the winter months are great for checking out rivers nearby on Google or Bing maps to look for potential fishing and launch spots. If WI's DNR has a website that tells what fish species are in a particular lake that can be a great tool, just find one the river runs through to get an idea of what kinds of fish might be there. Also any local fishing forums can be useful for putting the river name in the search bar to see what comes up.

+NDYakAngler keep it up bud! I'm a huge fan, I won't ask where you are fishing but is that river public? I'm buying a kayak next year (probably koosa HD and I honestly want to explore like how you do in your videos.

Thanks! I've really enjoyed fishing rivers since I got my kayak. The scenery is great and the fish seem to be a lot more aggressive in moving water. Everything will start freezing over in a month or so here so I'll be getting out every chance I get until then.

I wouldn't eat one that big, but they sure are fun to catch! I like that you have the camera and show all of these great fishing expeditions. I wish I had one of those cameras back about 40 years ago. It would have proved where I was and maybe saved my marriage. Oh well, I had more fun fishing anyway.

Sounds like fun, in Key West, we use to hook 6 foot Tarpons in small skiffs, just for the free ride around the harbor. Sometimes they shook off if you let out enough slack and other times you had to pull them in close and cut the line. You don't try to d-hook a fish half as long as your boat when a good kick of the tail could flip you over. But they were a lot of fun and the hooks rust out in a couple of weeks.
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 9 years ago
Yeah I like the 2-3lbers for eating. There aren't many that size on this stretch of river, these were actually a little smaller than average. Almost all of them I've hooked into with bass lures and ice fishing have been in the 7-12lb range. They put up an awesome fight though so its a lot of fun hooking into them! That's one thing I'm looking forward to this winter, big catfish on a little ice rod!

August and September are when they seem to be the most active on this river. I used to do pretty well all summer through about this time of year when I used to bank fish for them. They spawn later than most fish so it would slow down for a couple weeks in June while that went on.

Nice, healthy, fish! Great job getting that hook off from the side. Cool rig; may try it even though I think I get stuck more from the lead hanging up on rocks then from the hook. I'm surprised that shrimp stayed on; never tried 'em for cats, when chicken liver is so cheap, but I'm sure the smell of shrimp washes away much easier. Did you go basic on the cinematography 'cause they're only catfish or what? :) Thanks for uploading the vid!

+NDYakAngler Great suggestions on the timing of the shrimp purchase and use of the zip lock bag for hooking them while keeping hands clean. I like the hat cam for closer shots, and that other setup you have for the wide angle views of the river, weed beds, etc....Thanks again!
NDYakAngler
NDYakAngler - 9 years ago
Thanks! I always try to cast the rig out and leave it alone, once its time to reel in I'll pop it up off the bottom and reel as fast as I can to prevent it from dragging and getting hung up. I haven't had any problems yet with the sinker getting hung up on rocks, just a few tree snags with the hook but the kayak makes it easy to retrieve them. I'll pick up a few bags of shrimp when it goes on sale, sometimes you can get it for free when they're tossing the fresh shrimp that's reached its expiration date if you talk to the right person. It seems to work better if you let it sit out for a couple days but it starts to stink pretty bad. I like to keep mine in a zip lock so I can grab the shrimp from outside the bag when I hook it and try to keep the smell off my hands and all my gear. I decided to use the hat cam because I wanted to explain a few things and it makes it easier when I just have to look in the direction I want the camera to shoot. The lapel mic I use with it works a lot better in the wind than the audio setup on my other camera rigs too.

Thanks! I rigged a polarizer lens on the Gopro case I use with the hat cam, it worked great with the clear water! I've had snapping turtles take my bait a few times too. It's a little more tricky getting the hook back when that happens!
