so you guys were running some class 3 water, not properly outfitted but hey, you can float most things through that rapid so wth! why didn't you guys have safety set up? did you have throw bags? this is kind of embarrassing...I read everything included under the video and all that was said, no mention of not being able to set up safety(which meant, in this case, it would have been wise to portage), so whats the deal?? also, why would you not secure your pfd before running rapid?

I grew up on California's most dangerous river, the Kern. My dad worked at a power plant, we lived in company housing, and we swam the river most of our summer days. We often were called upon by the search and rescue team to give opinion as to where a drowner may have ended up. Also, sad to say, we were often correct. Watching Jim struggle in the rapids gave me chills. I'm 54 now, and I cannot swim like back in the 70's. I kayak fish 2-3 times a month, and have been in class 3's with my little fishing kayak. I think it was good to see Jim's adventure, mainly because it reminds us that we aren't as young (and small) as we used to be, and secondly we may have skills in small surf and tiny riffles, but the big stuff will kick your ass. He would have likely drown without his PFD. You all can make fun, call names, point fingers, but frankly I'm glad y'all posted it. respecting the power of water and weather is the very first lesson any kayaker should learn.

this is why you learn how to swim before climbing in a kayak. Before you paddle class I,II,III, IV, and even class V, learn how to swim confidently for self rescue in each of those rapids, you will swim when near the edge of you abilities, and freak accidents, no matter how good you are. you cant always count on a roll or having someone rescue you. If your not willing to swim it, dont paddle it.

.Kayak Fishing Game On - Part 5 - Ottawa River . Original video with explanation... if you look carefully..he flushed out on his own after getting beat 40 seconds at the most... for a kayaker...we see these types of situation on a daily basis..

The Ottawa River is LARGE and SAFE. We bring rafters and new kayakers through these rapids by the thousands a day during spring and summer. Rescues are easily done and "Accidents" like these dont happen often... Asides from that the Ottawa is a mecca for fishing and kayaking... check it out if you can and enjoy this gem of a river. :)

At these levels its a fairly easy hole to get out of if you know what do do ie: curl up in a ball and go deep through the green water... or swim to the side of the hole rather than away from it...There are many whitewater fishing kayaks especially from riot, jackson that can go through class 3 rapids like the one pictured above.. This was in a professional setting and was dealt with professionally...Anyone who attempts to go fishin in or near rapids should have minimal whitewater knowledge.

You guys are a bunch of whiny little twats. He has proper gear for the Ottawa river and is with Ken Whiting, a world renouned whitewater paddler/pioneer. The rapid theyre in is called McCoys...The first "hole" they went through is "Sattlers" and is harmless... the last part where he got "stuck" is called 7/8 hole and it is not the usual line to take, or the one they wanted to go in. They shouldve had a briefing on what do do if shit happens, hence why he was just floating instead of swimming out

I adore doggy footage on Youtube. I use up an awful lot of time this way. But a large number of people are incrementally KILLING their family dogs (without understanding it)! feel ya brother. I had a similar experience when trying to learn to surf only to be pulled up by a friend. I had given up and everything went dark. Funnily enough the decision to let go wasn't a hard one and I was ok with it. Still up to that point I was shitting my dacks. Well done to your rescue for being Johnny on the spot. I'd go yaking with him any day after seeing that.

@KayakFishingTales You are completely correct. I am a fisherman of Australia and I think you have to show people the good but also the bad to warn people of the potential dangers. Every year you see rock fisherman who are new to rock fishing get consumed by waves and get badly injured or death. Showing someone what can happen is better then letting them get into these situations with no idea. If professionals like this can get into these situations you know anyone is vulnerable.

I rescued someone in a similar situation… we both almost drowned. Unlike Jim, the man I rescued wasn’t wearing a lifevest or a shirt. The only thing I could grab onto was his hair… Hairy situation. Or should I say, less hair situation. : ) Glad everything turned out ok.

@wwmon2 Or... it's this kind of stuff that demonstrates the very real dangers associated with flowing rivers, and will hopefully prevent anglers who are inexperienced with paddling in current from getting in over their heads. We believe it makes sense to share the lessons we learn (good and bad), rather than just let people learn themselves the hard way.

Stupid and irresponsible, a flatwater fishing kayak through whitewater? Shame on Johnson Outdoors and other sponsors for putting their name on this. It's this sort of crap that scares people away from kayaking and promotes a death-defying image that we in the industry must work hard to deflect.

@tc3271 If you look closely at 1:21 in the video Ken points down river, what you don't hear is him telling me "Go That Way" leading me right into the hole and danger. All part of his master plan to make himself look like the hero, and even if he fails he still gets to take my place as host of the show. He is s devious fellow. (This of course is sarcasim and I only slightly blame Ken for trying to drown me.) JS :)

I love the show, but one of the main reasons I watch it is because of Ken Whiting, that guy is amazing the way he handles a kayak, and to watch him go into water like that for a friend just proves what kind of guy he is. Thanks Ken for saving Jim's butt.....lol, was amazing too watch.............bad part Jim will always owe Ken now.........lol And his ocean kayak tips are too me the hit of the show.
