Kayak Fishing for California Sheephead | #FieldTrips Ep 3

In this episode of Field Trips: West Coast, I'm back in La Jolla for a 2nd day kayak fishing with Kevin Nakada from Hobie. Since I knocked yellowtail off my bucket list last episode, we'll be targeting one of the most bizarre fish I've ever seen: California sheephead. Watch until the end for a preview at episode 3! Comment below and tell me more about fishing in SoCal or ask me any questions you guys have! I reply to every one. What type of rods and reels do you use?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 6 years ago
The red casting rod is a custom build by a guy named Mark Crouse, the reel is a Seigler Reels SG. Don’t think I have a red spinning setup, but my spinning setups are all Lamiglas Rods and Penn Reels.

Robert Field thank you for replying back. And I’m sorry I was watching your YouTube videos of your Southern California fishing trip. And I see that you are using a red and black fishing rod and reel both in a spinning and casting set up for saltwater. So I was wondering what brand and models they were?
Thanks

Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Thanks guys. I know you didn't ask for it, but here's my advice on your channel while it's still young: change the name. While "Hot Girl..." may get you some superficial views, it's not going to translate to lasting subscribers. I skimmed through your 2 vids and she's got more to offer than just being hot, she seems like a solid angler! I'd change it to your first names or something, like "John and Jane Fishing," and I think people will connect better and take it more seriously when they see the name. Just my 2 cents, but either way best of luck as you start cranking out vids!

Just wondering why the large sheep head looked so different. At times the head was slate gray and the body varying shades of red. At other times, for example when going in the bag, the fish was solid red and had a black head. Confused a bit here.

All fish begin changing or losing their color when you take them out of the water, some species moreso than others. If you ever catch a mahi mahi, they'll often be bright yellow and green in the water, then start changing to blue and grey as they begin to lose their life. It's also probably lighting to some extent. It was jet black when I brought it out, then turned lighter as it died. Common in all fish, just probably more obvious with a fish that's jet black and bright red.

Michael Sude - 7 years ago
Recently i'm watching a lot of US fishermen here on YouTube and it seems so that most of them don't kill the fish they want to harvest. It goes straight into the cooler. Here in Germany you have to knock it uncontious and kill it immediatly after catching if you want to keep it. Anything else is against the law. Is there anything similar in the US?
P.s. I dont want to bitch around animal rights, i'm just curious.
Michael Sude

You guys realize that by keeping the biggest ones, your only making it harder to find them. Bigger fish can hold more eggs or sperm and they have the propensity to produce larger offspring. It's a huge flaw in the sysytem and I'm not sure why it's still in place.
Gary Myers

The Tetra it is a male fish. No eggs or progeny lost besides most people don’t target sheepshead

These fucking things eat sea urchins like pudding I'm pretty sure a hook isn't going to be that bad they're are fish that have been caught and release over a dozen times through their life time and they sim off and continue to love their fish life. If you have suck a problem with harming the ocean life then why don't you kill your self? You being alive, using the bathroom, driving, and using electricity is killing more wild life then this guy fishing

saul gonzalez
saul gonzalez - 7 years ago
so you are saying that all the fishes you capture and show in the video are consumed and that peace of metal that you put in between the fish while you hold the fish for the camera is just fine because you eat that fish that clearly i see you put it back in to the water after torture a animal, is ok and i do consume animal product but torture a animal even before eat it is not acceptable, if you will eat it, kill it as fast as you can
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
+saul gonzalez just for sport? I fed my family with this fish. My mom and I cooked it up in VLOG episode 4. Why would I put it on ice if I wasn't eating it? Doesn't make much sense now does it? Those larger Sheephead tend to be the reef bosses and can get pretty old. I have seen the same one repeatedly on it's particular reef. The teeth are for crunching sea urchins and crabs. Wrasse family, same as Hogfish in Mexico and parrot fish. I would rather eat Kelp bass and or Ocean Whitefish or rockfish for that matter, but Sheephead is decent eating and certainly not fishy tasting.

How's the rig set up to target these species?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Super simple, basically like a dropshot. Mainline, hook, 2-3 feet of line, weight. So weight is below the hook. I'd go with like a 4/0 circle if you're releasing fish or a J if not.

Patrick Mckeown
Patrick Mckeown - 7 years ago
Yea thanks rob I live in Australia and I was warf fishing and this huge yellow tail came passed my live bait and smashed it and it give up a really good fight I just didn’t have heavy enough tackle and also was is the overhead rod and reel you I want to have a look at it
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
For saltwater you can't go wrong with Penn stuff. I'd get whichever model you can afford (Fierce is the cheap one, Battle is solid, I also like Conflict or the Slammer if you wanna go all in). Just grab a combo, and you'll want like a 5000 series for fish like this, 6500 for bigger stuff offshore like that yellowtail, or 8000 for really big stuff.

It's an incredible place dude. I'd start with the Devil's River first. I did a video on that one too. It's the more famous sister to the Devil's and just as amazing, but a little more forgiving. Best to start with the Devil's, then do the Pecos.

When you find a quality YT channel with 50k + subs it's like pulling teeth to get a genuine answer (or sometimes any answer) from the poster. I can only imagine how hard it is to stay on top of it. I'm sure it gets harder and harder everyday but this is what sets your channel apart. Thank you!!!

What rod do you recommend for big jacks, groupers and yellow tail?
Mohammed almehairbi
Mohammed almehairbi - 7 years ago
100 pound grouper, what rod company makes the best livebait and jigging rods?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Man that's a tough question. Spinning or conventional? Not sure what type of jack you're referring to, yellowtail as in what I caught in episode 2 or yellowtail snapper? What kind of grouper? Grouper range from 5 pounds to 500 pounds. What technique? Live bait? Jigging? The rod is more about what I'm doing with it (bait, technique, lure, etc) than it is about the target species

How deep were y'all ? I saw the first sheep head you caught have something hanging out his poop shoot. Isn't that from pressure change from deep waters ?
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
We were fishing around 100-160 feet. I can't be more specific than that because as I said in the video, we forgot our fish finder batteries that morning. But Kevin knows the area well and we were targeting 120-140. And yep, that's why their "poop shoot" was expanding.

Side note, Hogfish are also the same way with the females and males. You can find them all over the east coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Bahamas. They are a member of the Wrasse family and a stunning fish. They are very hard to target with Rod/reel tackle, the best method is to target with a Speargun. But the females are also solid red, but when they transition to males, they get a deep dark purple head. Very awesome fish, they can open their mouths an entire 180 degrees.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Nice dude! I am familiar with hogfish, I live in Florida, but didn't know they did the same sex change. That was the first fish I thought of when I saw the female sheephead. But the males look more like a tautog further north up the east coast. The females have that same hinged jaw look like the hogfish, and Kevin said they're related.
Joshua Henn
Joshua Henn - 7 years ago
why are the guides on your rod out of line
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
That's called spiral wrap or acid wrap. You can google it for info on the advantages.
Joseph Torres
Joseph Torres - 7 years ago
Black sea bass and some groupers are hermphrodites. They change genders based on pheromones(I think) and or abundance of certain genders. Also sheepshead remind me of tautog than hogfish.
Robert Field
Robert Field - 7 years ago
Yep, like I said in the video, I've heard of other fish that do it. I believe hogfish actually change too. And yeah, the males look a lot like tautogs, I actually said that to Kevin off camera. The females looked more like hogfish to me with how their mouths flared out and hinged way open. But the males definitely look like a weirdly-colored tautog.

Dude that was an amazing trip, I live in California also, sheepheads are yummy. Happy fishing our pacific Coast. We do have a great fishery here and it's all up and down our coast from San Diego to to San Francisco Bay and more. Right now our yellow tail tuna are going off, but I know you are well aware of that, seeing your video of the day before. I've been following your channel for some time now. You are a true sportsman and I enjoy watching you fish, wherever you are. Enjoy California, we are the greatest state in the world.
